Taking Boaventura de Sousa Santos' argument that there is no global social justice without global cognitive justice as its starting point, this article suggests that there is no global climate justice without global cognitive justice (implying both ontological justice and epistemological justice). If we take "the ontological turn" in anthropology and other disciplines and its focus on indigenous ontologies seriously, however, we seem to end up in a situation that is difficult to maneuver in relation to conventional understandings of climate justice. When discussing climate change in relation to multiple ontologies, there are two risks: 1) reproducing what I call "the coloniality of reality", arguing that indigenous ontologies are actually nothing but a cultural (mis-representation of the world; 2) reproducing a conservative relativism that leads to nothing but the maintenance of status quo and that bears a resemblance to climate change denial. A thorough ethnographic understanding of what I would call "the moral meteorology" of the Andes and a broadened understanding of climate change, however, make it possible to navigate between the Scylla of coloniality and the Charybdis of relativism and to articulate a radical critique of fossil-fueled capitalism from a relational ontology, demanding climate justice while denouncing coloniality, and discussing the political ontology of climate change without ignoring its political ecology-and vice versa.

Prenant l'argument de Boaventura de Sousa Santos selon lequel il n'existe pas de justice sociale globale sans la justice cognitive globale, cet article suggère qu'il n'y a pas de justice climatique mondiale sans justice cognitive globale (impliquant à la fois la justice ontologique et la justice épistémologique). Si nous prenons «le tournant ontologique» dans l'anthropologie et d'autres disciplines et que nous mettons l'accent sur les ontologies autochtones au sérieux, nous semblons finir dans une situation difficile par rapport à la compréhension conventionnelle de la justice climatique. Lorsqu'on parle du changement climatique par rapport aux multiples ontologies, il existe deux risques: 1) reproduire ce que j'appelle «la colonialité de la réalité», arguant que les ontologies autochtones ne sont en réalité qu'une culture (une mauvaise représentation du monde) et 2) Reproduisant un relativisme conservateur qui ne conduit qu'à l'entretien du statu quo, se rapprochant du déni du changement climatique. Une compréhension ethnographique approfondie de ce que j'appelle «la météorologie morale» des Andes et une compréhension élargie du changement climatique permet cependant de naviguer entre la Scylla de la colonisation et les Charybdis du relativisme et d'articuler une critique radicale des fossiles, A alimenté le capitalisme. Cela diffère d'une ontologie relationnelle-exigeant la justice climatique tout en dénonçant la colonialité et en discutant de l'ontologie politique du changement climatique sans ignorer son écologie politique-et vice versa.

El artículo parte del argumento de Boaventura de Sousa Santos en cuanto se refiere a que no habrá justicia social global sin justicia cognitiva global. Así, el artículo plantea que no habrá una justicia climática global fuera de una justicia cognitiva global (implicando tanto a la justicia epistémica como a la justicia ontológica). No obstante, si tomamos con seriedad "el giro ontológico" de la antropología y otras disciplinas y su enfoque en las ontologías indígenas, pareciera que llegamos a una situación analítica difícil de manejar en relación a las nociones convencionales de justicia climática. De esta manera, analizando el cambio climático en relación a ontologías múltiples, nos encontramos frente a dos riesgos: 1) el de reproducir lo que denomino "la colonialidad de la realidad" que no es sino la idea de que las ontologías indígenas no son más que (mis-) representaciones culturales del mundo; 2) el riesgo de reproducir un relativismo conservador que no hace nada más que mantener el estatus quo y que lleva cierta semblanza con la posición de la negación del cambio climático antropogénico. Empero, la apreciación etnográfica profunda de lo que llamo "la meteorología moral" en los Andes y una comprensión más amplia del cambio climático nos permiten navegar entre la Escila de la colonialidad y el Charibdis del relativismo y así articular una crítica radical del capitalismo fósil desde una ontología relacional, simultáneamente exigiendo justicia climática y denunciando la colonialidad, analizando así la ontología política del cambio climático sin omitir su ecología política y viceversa.

The primary focus of my dissertation is the trajectory of the democratic discourse in the post-Afghani era of Muslim political thought, in particular among the reformist (islahi) current. Toward this end, I situate my comparative political theory within the emerging genre of “political ontology,” which I deploy as an analytical device. More specifically, I seek to demonstrate that the shifting attitudes toward democracy over time among contemporary Muslim thinkers can be better grasped by approaching each of the selected thinkers’ political theories as a constellation of ontological, ethical, and political dimensions.
Accordingly, the first part presents several new themes that have received substantial interest in recent political theory. I dedicate each chapter to a specific genre of political ontology, political theology, and radical democracy. Having laid the ground for my ontological narrative, the second part analyzes the political theories of Jamaladdin Afghani (d. 1897), Sayyid Qutb (d. 1966), Fazlur Rahman (d. 1985), and such current liberal Muslim thinkers as Abdelwahab El-Affendi, Khaled Abou El Fadl, Nader Hashemi, and Abdullahi An-Na‘im. While I analyze their political theories as ontopolitical constellations, I seek to show that each one’s approach to democracy or self-government is prefigured by his conception of God as well as how they conceive of the relationship between the Muslim self and the “other,” the rest of creation, and the revealed text (viz., the Qur’an).
But political ontology is more than just an analytical device for my project, for it also furnishes the contents of normative reflection. Hence, I also take steps to offer an alternative to the liberal Muslims’ comprehension of democracy. In conversation with some recent ontologically oriented formulations of “radical democracy” and “critical political theology,” as well as their critiques of liberal democracy, I point to a different direction for Muslim political thinking on self-rule, one that attends more to vicegerency and the duty to justice as well as dialogical engagements with the “other,” and one that is more characterized by a commitment to social justice based on an expanded understanding of egalitarianism.

The conflicts that scarred the First International and resulted in its demise revolved around three core questions: the source of revolutionary causation and the nature of its process; the issue of authority in the revolutionary government; and the divide between the being of the classless society and revolutionary social praxis that continues to assume the legitimacy of property in a collective form. These are some of the very same themes and concerns that animate Agamben’s recent works. The sections of this chapter examine how Agamben responds to these questions in his recent work on redemptive transformation, government, poverty and use. I begin by explaining how Agamben supports a theory of transformation that is critical of the Marxist theory of class-based revolution, and instead approximates and develops anarchist practices of dissolution. I then consider how anarchism provides the only possible solution to the ‘archist’ aporias that reside in the onto-political division Agamben identifies between being and practice; between the rule of sovereignty and the economy of government. Finally, I explain how Agamben’s recent attention to a politics of common ‘use’ of things, opposed to the appropriation and possession of things, revives a constructive practice of anarchism as an anomial technique of social organisation. In making these claims about Agamben’s anarchism, I consider his work in relation to anarchist ideas on property and social justice presented, for example, by Proudhon in What is Property? and The Philosophy of Poverty, and in other classic work by anarchists such as Godwin, Kropotkin, Tolstoy and Stirner. In light of Marx's critical assessments of Stirner in The German Ideology, and of Proudhon in the The Poverty of Philosophy, I argue that Agamben's recent ideas bring him closer to the socialist anarchist tradition than to Marx's governmental communism. I also suggest that Agamben’s most recent work on the positive constitution of community in terms of shared practices of ‘use’ represents a significant shift from his preoccupation with the negative paradigm of inoperativity and, consequently, signals his distancing from, or his complication of, the political egoism of Stirner’s ‘ethical-anarchism’. By reconstructing Agamben’s approach to key problems in revolutionary political philosophy, I argue that what is at stake in his work is a rethinking of the paradigm of anarchy in the contemporary light of political ontology, restoring the potential of that tradition for use in the present.

Nearly four centuries ago, liberal political thought asserted that the state was the product of a distant, prehistorical, social contract. Social science has done little to overcome this fiction. Even the most radical of theories have tended to remain silent on the question of the production of the state, preferring instead to focus on the determinations and functions of state actions. Bratsis argues that the causes of the state are to be found within everyday life. Building upon insights from social, political, and anthropological theories, his book shows how the repetitions and habits of our daily lives lead to our nationalization and the perception of certain interests and institutions as "public". Bratsis shows that only by seeking the state’s everyday, material causes can we free ourselves from the pitfalls of viewing the state as natural, inevitable, and independent from social relations."

The monograph is devoted to the study of institutional, value and personal factors of the historical formation and existence of the phenomenon of a citizen in Russia. The citizen is considered in the conception of the paradigm of transformation, typical for the political thinking of Modernity. The author analyzes the current political situation in Russia, assuming that the existence of a Russian is determined by the inconsistency of the political form of a "citizen" with the content of the "citizen" phenomenon, which means aggregate of real (informal, actual) conditions of being an individual. The main attributes of the political form of "citizen" turn out to be problematic: the involvement of a person in activities of a self-organized and developed civil society; membership in the nation as a political community, since the existence of the Russian nation is questionable; full membership in the national state, which generates the rights of civil and political participation. The book is addressed to specialists in the social sciences, teachers and students, as well as practitioners and all readers interested in the problems of Russia's political modernization.

Монография посвящена исследованию институциональных, ценностных и личностных факторов исторического становления и существования феномена гражданина в России. Гражданин рассматривается в концептуальных рамках парадигмы трансформации, характерной для политической мысли Модерна. Автор анализирует современную политическую ситуацию в России, предполагая, что существование россиянина определяется несоответствием политической формы «гражданин» содержанию того феномена, который называется гражданином, то есть совокупности реальных (неформальных, фактических) условий бытия индивида.
