Medieval small finds

The development of human societies has been studied extensively by historians and social scientists. In Finland, there is a significant and underexplored amount of digitised archaeological material, such as the Finnish Heritage Agency’s database of archaeological sites and monuments. The EU-funded DeepFIN project will analyse the Finnish archaeological and historical data. It will use geographic information systems and other digital humanities methodologies. The project will reassess and create a new understanding of the deep history of archaeological landscapes, historical settlement and material culture development from the Iron Age (500 BCE to 1200/1300 CE) to the Middle Ages (1200/1300 to 1520 CE). This paper presents the goals of the DeepFIN project, and discusses how it builds upon my previous work in GIS/Digital Humanities research.

L’une des principales difficultés pour naviguer dans une base de données est d’arriver sur la bonne page : sur Artefacts, cela consiste à trouver l’ensemble de pages, puis la page que l’on recherche précisément. Ce mémo indique les différentes méthodes disponibles pour un utilisateur débutant, ou avancé, pour trouver le plus rapidement possible la page souhaitée.

Excavation at Curtis Fields, Chickerell, Weymouth, carried out in advance of residential development, produced evidence of medieval and post-medieval occupation. A rectilinear series of ditched enclosures were dated to the thirteenth to fourteenth centuries, although they may have originated earlier. Whilst no direct evidence of associated structures was located, the finds from cut features and a contemporary spread from a probable midden indicate a modest domestic and agricultural setting. However, three items of equestrian equipment may indicate a higher status presence. Post-medieval features were consistent with historic map evidence for a farm at Little Francis, and its gradual abandonment in the first half of the twentieth century.

All known examples of armorial horse furniture held on the Norfolk Sites and Monuments Record, with the provenance of the vast majority accurately recorded, have been brought together in this book and 246 examples are illustrated. Arms are attributed with local, national and European connections, and changes in form and decoration are analysed, resulting in a revision of some conventional dating.
One of the most interesting outcomes of the study is the indication that the heraldic decoration of horse furniture got underway during the second and third quarters of the twelfth century, somewhat earlier than was previously accepted. The late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries saw the maximum popularity of enamelled pieces and thereafter a slow decline set in.

A paper published in Medieval Archaeology 62.2 (pages 397-398 with figures on pages 395-6), discusses an interesting type of medieval copper-alloy buckle which stands out for the highly individual form of its plate, which represents either the body of a bird in flight and/or, if viewed with the pin pointing upwards, the Lombardic letter M in upper case, perhaps an allusion to the Virgin Mary. The paper runs from page 19-20 in the PDF and the Figs (8-9) are on pages  17-18.

Surveys carried out on the western part of Hainaut (Belgium) revealed numerous hooks and ferrets of demi-ceint dating from the 14th-15th centuries. This article lists 63 artifacts of four main types. : those made of an openwork rosette, those decorated with the Gothic letter "A", those with the monograme IHS / M and those openwork representing a biblical scene.

Les fouilles archéologiques portant sur la période des XIe - XVIe siècles menées en Provence livrent de très nombreux accessoires métalliques du costume et de la parure de corps. Ce sont des éléments de fixation prenant la forme d’épingles, d’agrafes, de boutons, des constituants de la ceinture – boucle, chape, mordant, appliques –, mais aussi des ornements que l’on ajoute à celle-ci ou à même les étoffes, tels les grelots, ou bien encore des parures de corps – bracelets, bagues et colliers –, des objets de dévotion personnelle comme les enseignes de pèlerinage. L’étude archéologique et typo-chronologique de ces objets a permis d’organiser le mobilier et conduit dans de nombreux cas à l’obtention de datations typologiques. Elle a également rendu possible la caractérisation d’évolutions dans l’ornementation des accessoires métalliques, dans la manière de fixer les pièces vestimentaires ou d’orner le corps. Les accessoires métalliques du costume présentent des variations morphologiques, de décoration, de fonctionnalité, de matériau ou de techniques de fabrication caractéristiques d’évolutions dans les usages, de phénomènes de mode, de la construction du paraître, d’une hiérarchie de l’apparence. Il est donc nécessaire d’aller au-delà de la seule analyse archéologique et de faire appel aux sources textuelles et à l’iconographie pour approfondir ces aspects et ouvrir sur la valeur économique ou symbolique de ces objets. La production de ces objets métalliques requiert des compétences techniques plus ou moins élaborées que des analyses de composition par la méthode PIXE, sur une sélection d’artefacts, mettent en perspective. La nature des alliages utilisés, comparée aux données disponibles sur le trafic des matériaux en Provence et à la diffusion géographique des artefacts, conduit à proposer des hypothèses quant aux zones de production. Les résultats de notre thèse aboutissent à une meilleure compréhension de cet aspect de la culture matérielle qu’est le costume, grâce à une étude archéologique complétée par la prise en compte des données offertes par d’autres sources.

Archaeological excavations conducted in Provence and concerning the period of the XIth - XVIth centuries deliver very numerous metallic accessories of costume and adornment of the body. These are (1) fastening elements in the form of pins, staples, buttons, (2) constituents of the belt : buckle, chape, belt ends, mounts, (3) ornaments added on the belt or directly onto the fabrics, such as bells, (4) finery : bracelets, rings and necklaces, (5) personal devotional objects such as pilgrim signs. The archaeological and typo-chronological study of the objects has allowed to classify the accessories and has lead in many cases to typological dating. It has also made possible the characterization of changes in the ornamentation of metal accessories and in the way of fixing items of clothing or adorning the body. The metal accessories of the costume present variations in their aspect, decoration, functionality, material or manufacturing techniques which reflect changes in the customs, fashion phenomena, the making of appearances, a hierarchy of the looks. It is therefore necessary to move beyond the mere archaeological analysis and to call for textual sources and iconography to thoroughly study these aspects and broaden the outlook to the economic or symbolic value of these objects. The production of these metal objects requires technical skills, more or less profound, that compositional analyzes by the PIXE technique, on a selection of artifacts, put into perspective.

A paper published in Medieval Archaeology 55, pages 299-303, discusses an interesting and previously unrecognised group of exceptional zoomorphic pieces. They comprise integral frames and hollow animal heads, perhaps lions, through which a strap would have passed, and which acted as either as a form of plate (Type 1) or as an outside edge (Type 2). No example of the group has been found in the archaeological literature, and it is absent from one very large selection of illustrated buckles. The paper runs from page 16-20 in the PDF.

Zusammenfassung. Die Burgruine Freienstein liegt westlich
von Winterthur. Sie wurde 1254 erstmals schriftlich erwähnt,
1474 war die Burg bereits zerfallen. Unklar ist, was zwischen
1429 – der letzten Erwähnung eines Besitzerwechsels – und
1474 geschah. Der Chronist Heinrich Brennwald berichtet in
seiner zwischen 1508 und 1516 verfassten Schweizerchronik,
die Burg Freienstein sei 1443 im Verlauf des Alten Zürichkriegs
einem Brand zum Opfer gefallen. Da es sich dabei
nicht um den Bericht eines Augenzeugen handelt und
Brennwald einige Geschichten in seiner Chronik ausschmückte
bzw. sich ausdachte, herrscht Unklarheit über die
Zuverlässigkeit dieser Nachricht.
Auf der Burgruine fanden im Zeitraum zwischen 1968 und
1982 mehrere Ausgrabungskampagnen statt. Dabei wurde
auch der seines äusseren Mauermantels weit gehend
beraubte, in einer Höhe von 13 m erhaltene Turm konserviert
und der Sodbrunnen vollständig ausgegraben.
Die Schriftquellen geben eine Bauzeit im mittleren 13. Jh.
an, was durch die Funde bestätigt wird. Auf der mittels
zweier Gräben vom übrigen Hügel abgetrennten Kuppe
stand ein dreigeschossiger Wohnturm mit den Aussenmassen
von 12,1 × 12,2 m. Unklar ist, ob der Turm ein bis zwei weitere,
in Holz errichtete Geschosse aufwies. Den Turm umgab
eine mittlerweile vollständig verschwundene Umfassungsmauer.
Völlig unbekannt ist, wann man ausserhalb des
Turms einen 32,3 m tiefen Schacht für einen Sodbrunnen
aushob. Dessen quadratischer Querschnitt ist möglicherweise
auf den Einsatz von Bergleuten zurückzuführen. Zwischen
Turm und Ringmauer standen einst weitere Bauten.
Nach einem Brand im mittleren 15. Jh. wird die Burg aufgegeben.
Angekohlte Konstruktionshölzer wurden in den
Sodbrunnen geworfen. Im Turm blieb eine mächtige Brandschuttschicht
liegen. Sie enthielt zahlreiche aussergewöhnliche
Gegenstände aus Metall. Unter den Waffenfunden finden sich
nebst drei Schwertern und einem Rüsthaken eines Turnierharnisches
zwei Läufe von Faustrohren aus der Zeit zwischen
1380 und 1400. Wie Schiessversuche von Ulrich Bretscher mit
nachgebauten Handfeuerwaffen zeigen, war die Wirkung der
ersten Feuerwaffen wesentlich gravierender als bislang angenommen.
Der Fund von vier süddeutschen Handhellern weist
zusammen mit Münzen anderer Fundstellen auf die wichtige
Rolle, die der Handheller im täglichen, regionalen Geldumlauf
des Spätmittelalters spielte. Auch Mailänder Sesini – auf
Burg Freienstein mit einer Münze belegt – zirkulierten im
Spätmittelalter in der Ostschweiz. Das vorliegende Küchengeschirr,
die gefundenen Werkzeuge und Geräte repräsentieren
hingegen keinesfalls einen vollständigen spätmittelalterlichen
Hausrat. Weitere Gegenstände wurden sicherlich ausserhalb
des Turms aufbewahrt.
Im Turm befand sich eine mit einem Kachelofen beheizte
Stube. Der letzte Ofen, der vor dem Brandereignis in Betrieb
war, wies im Gegensatz zu den damals modischen, aber auch
kostspieligen, vollständig mit Bildkacheln ausgestatteten
Turmöfen nur unverzierte Napf- und Tellerkacheln sowie
Kranzkacheln mit einer Wappendarstellung auf. Der im Wappenschild
und als Helmzier dargestellte Hund findet sich in
keinem Familienwappen der damaligen Burgbesitzer. Ein
Hund aber war Symbol der Turniergesellschaft «Im Leitbracken
» (Leithund), die 1436 von Adligen aus dem süddeutsch-
schweizerischen Raum gegründet wurde. Vielleicht
gab ein Besitzer der Burg Freienstein mit der Motivwahl seine
Zugehörigkeit zu dieser adligen Gesellschaft zu erkennen.
1474 war die 1429 letztmals als intakt verkaufte Burg
Freienstein eine Ruine. Was war in der Zwischenzeit passiert?
Trifft die Geschichte von der Zerstörung im Alten Zürichkrieg
im Jahr 1443 zu? Auf Grund der archäologischen Funde
lässt sich der Zeitpunkt der Brandkatastrophe im mittleren
15. Jh. nicht enger eingrenzen. Der Turm wurde nicht ge -
plündert, was eher gegen eine kriegerische Zerstörung
spricht. Vielleicht führte ein Blitzschlag, eine schadhafte Feuerstelle
oder unachtsamer Umgang mit offenem Feuer zu
einem Brand.

Various opening and closing systems existed in medieval architecture and furniture: Locks, hinges, padlocks, strap hinges,… Historiography has neglected this subject for a long time, leaving it to metalwork collectors and locksmithing enthusiast. The relatively recent development of "preventive" archaeological operations has allowed studying a large amount of unpublished data. This study has defined some new research tools, including the writing of a glossary revealing a French vocabulary of under-estimated richness. In order to trace the technical development of these objects, emphasis was placed on archaeological and iconographic sources. This redefining of the subject is done with the aid of graphic reconstruction showing how these mechanisms worked, as well a new typological classification which puts the history of forms aside in order to focus on the technical aspects. These objects are a pretext to the understanding and examination of the medieval society that designed, manufactured, used, improved, replaced, discarded and depicted them. It also appears that some of these utilitarian objects had a strong symbolic function.

La société médiévale a usé de divers systèmes d’ouverture et de fermeture dans son ameublement et son architecture : serrures, charnières, cadenas, pentures,… L’historiographie nous montre un sujet longtemps délaissé aux collectionneurs et amateurs de serrurerie et ferronnerie. Cette étude s’est employée à définir de nouveaux outils de recherche, entre autres avec la rédaction d’un glossaire faisant le point sur un vocabulaire d’une richesse sous-estimée. Le développement relativement récent de l’archéologie préventive a permis d’exhumer une quantité importante de données inédites. Ces nouvelles sources archéologiques – mais également iconographiques – ont été privilégiées afin d’essayer de retracer l’évolution technique de ces objets. Cette réappropriation du sujet passe, notamment, par des restitutions graphiques du fonctionnement des mécanismes et par un nouveau classement typologique qui délaisse l’histoire des formes pour se focaliser sur les aspects techniques. Ces objets ne sont qu’un prétexte pour aborder et comprendre la société médiévale qui les a pensés, fabriqués, utilisés, améliorés, remplacés, jetés et représentés. Il est également apparu que certains de ces objets – comme la clé – ont eu un rôle symbolique particulièrement fort.

La sociedad medieval ha utilizado diversos sistemas de apertura y cierre en el mobiliario y la arquitectura. Se trata de un tema hasta ahora muy poco tratado por la historiografía. Este estudio pretende establecer nuevos instrumentos para la investigación, como por ejemplo, mediante la elaboración de un glosario que utiliza un vocabulario de una riqueza que hasta el presente había sido subestimada. El desarrollo relativamente reciente de la arqueología preventiva ha permitido descubrir una gran cantidad de datos inéditos. Estas nuevas fuentes arqueológicas -y también iconográfias- han sido privilegiadas con el fin de tratar de rastrear la evolución técnica de estos objetos. Esta reapropiación del sujeto pasa, especialmente, por las restituciones gráficas del funcionamiento de los mecanismos y por una nueva clasificación tipológica que abandona la historia de las formas para centrarse más en los aspectos técnicos.

Nowy Targ Square is an important place on the map of medieval Wrocław, which is one of the most thoroughly studied medieval cities in modern Poland. In 2010–12, rescue excavations covering approximately 0,4 ha were conducted, recording more than 4 m of stratified deposits. 

In the course of the fieldwork 515 artefacts, made of both non-ferrous metals as well as iron, which can be attributed to dress accessories were discovered. It is one of the largest collections of this kind of artefacts from this part of Europe.   

This book presents a full catalogue of finds with colour photographs from this interesting site. It covers brooches, buckles, strap ends, belt mounts as well as other similar items and presents their basic typology and information about production and ornamentation techniques. Artefacts are analysed in relation to the organization of space, routes, possible stalls and places of production and discussed against broad European background.

La ceinture : le support de pièces métalliques La ceinture est un des principaux accessoires qui complètent le costume médiéval, qu'il soit militaire, religieux ou civil. Portée par toutes les classes sociales, par les deux sexes et à tout âge, elle peut être entièrement métallique mais, le plus couramment, revêt la forme d'une longue lanière de cuir ou d'étoffe éventuellement décorée d'appliques décoratives. Elle a pour fonction principale d'assurer, par sa fermeture, le maintien du vêtement, que ce soit au moyen d'un simple noeud, d'une boucle ou d'un système d'agrafage. Elle recouvre également une fonction de thésaurisation, si des métaux précieux sont utilisés, et éventuellement symbolique, selon les matériaux employés, le statut et le sexe de son porteur. À l'anneau ou à la boucle peuvent s'ajouter une chape assurant la liaison avec la courroie, un mordant à son extrémité opposée, des appliques tout au long du cuir ou du tissu de la ceinture (fig. 1). Le mordant et les appliques ont généralement une fonction ornementale, mais le premier peut être employé dans le cadre d'un système de fermeture par agrafage et les secondes être utilisées pour la suspension d'un objet.

In the Budapest History Museum, there is a huge collection of small metal finds from the medieval period, which was found during the excavations of the Buda Castle. In spite of the fact that the castle was excavated nearly 60 years ago, these bronze, copper and lead objects have not been published since then.
This paper - which is actually an MA thesis at Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem - would like to present this unique collection, with the intention of proving the central and  representative role of the medieval town of Buda.  Among the finds, there are candlesticks, parts of different chandeliers, objects in connection with the cloths and dresses, and with the everyday life.

In 2005–2016 a number of isolated metal finds of medieval and early modern date ended up in collections of various museums in eastern Bohemia and in the Bohemian-Moravian borderland. These especially include militaria, equestrian equipment, but other find categories are present as well. The objects have different evidential value, but in a number of cases, they represent valuable sources of knowledge about areas which are archaeologically still little known. Bohemian-Moravian borderland – Middle Ages – metal objects Úvod Od r. 2005 (po obsazení archeologického pracoviště v Regionálním muzeu ve Vysokém Mýtě) zde byla věnována značná pozornost problematice používání i zneužívání detekto-rů kovů. V této souvislosti tu byly přebírány náhodné nálezy učiněné s detektory kovů, později řadu nálezů poskytli spolupracovníci uvedené instituce, na řadě lokalit pak pro-váděl cílený detektorový průzkum archeolog Regionálního muzea ve Vysokém Mýtě za účasti spolupracovníků. Vedle kolekcí z nejrůznějších lokalit, které byly a jsou postupně předmětem prezentace v odborném tisku, docházelo rovněž k ojedinělým nálezům vrchol-ně středověkých artefaktů a artefaktů ze staršího novověku. I když jejich vypovídací hod-nota je značně nižší, protože nepochází z intaktních archeologických situací v rámci stan-dardních výzkumů či z větších nálezových kolekcí, které by usnadnily interpretaci, i tyto předměty si nepochybně zaslouží bližší pozornost. The amount of official messages sent to North-western Europe by the Roman- Catholic authorities in the 11th–16th century is enormous. Many of these documents were sealed with the papal bulla. The seals of these letters have been found in primary contexts in religious, noble and civic sites.
The secondary use of papal bullae in Christian burials indicates that a bulla was more than an authenticity mark from a message from Rome. The bulla had a spiritual, religious-apotropaic connotation. This can be deducted from findspots such as graves and when the bulla is pierced for use as a talisman or amulet. Another form of secondary use was in agricultural fields where it might be used for its believed apotropaic strength. A possible explanation is that men on earth tried to cope with uncertainty by favouring the providence using the bulla as a connection between the peasantry and power from above.

Mots clés : pèlerinage, Moyen Âge, enseigne de pèlerinage, ampoule de pèlerinage, métal Résumé : La pratique du pèlerinage en Provence et au départ de Provence est documentée par les sources écrites, mais également par des objets achetés par les pèlerins dans les sanctuaires visités. La plupart sont des enseignes et des ampoules en étain, en plomb ou en alliage des deux métaux. L'étude de ces pièces métalliques révèle la multiplicité des moules, la persistance des motifs au cours du temps et participe à renseigner sur la renommée des sanctuaires et l'étendue de celle-ci. À la fin du xv e siècle et au xvi e siècle, la forme et le décor de certaines enseignes évoluent et annoncent l'apparition des médailles en alliage cuivreux. L'analyse des contextes de découverte des enseignes, ampoules et médailles révèle des différences dans la symbolique des objets.

This paper discusses Byzantine bronze weights excavated at Mangup. The artefacts are divided into two types according to their square or discal shape. Type 1 comprises five artefacts defined as exagia, or weights used to control the weight of gold coins. From the letters indicating nominal values and the weight of the artefacts there are reasons to consider them standard weights for the nomisma coin and its fractions, semissis and tremissis. According to the analogies, weights of Type 1 dates from the fourth to sixth centuries. Type 2 includes an exagion of the weight equalling six nomismata and a weight showing Greek letter “K” (or “П”) of undefined nominal value. The Type 2 artefacts date from the seventh to early ninth centuries. Both types of weights widely spread out through the Byzantine territory and in neighbouring countries. The finds of Byzantine weights at Mangup supply evidence that the residents of Doros followed the imperialweighting system. The presence of exagia indicates financial operations with gold coins.

In de wintermaanden van 1997-1998 heeft er een opgraving plaatsgevonden in het zuidoostelijke deel van de binnenstad van Tiel. Het onderzoek werd verricht op een vrijwel rechthoekig terrein, dat wordt omgeven door de Eerste Bleekveldweg aan de noord- en oostzijde, de Wethouderskade aan de zuidzijde en de Schoolstraat aan de westzijde. Het terrein staat bekend onder het toponiem Het Bleekveld. Het totale terrein heeft een oppervlakte van ca. 65 x 40 m waarvan ongeveer 36% is onderzocht.
Het archeologisch onderzoek werd uitgevoerd door de Rijksdienst voor het Oudheidkundig Bodemonderzoek (ROB) in opdracht van en in samenwerking met de gemeente Tiel. Aanleiding tot het orderzoek was de door de gemeente Tiel geplande nieuwbouw op deze locatie, in de vorm van een carrévormig complex van winkels en daarboven gelegen woningen.
Het onderzoek is tot nu toe de laatste schakel in een keten van opgravingen in de Tielse binnenstad, waarbij archeologische resten behorende bij oudste bewoningsfase van de stad zijn onderzocht. Opgravingen aan de Achterweg, de Koornmarkt en de Tol, uitgevoerd tussen 1994 en 1996, hebben een schat aan informatie opgeleverd over de ontwikkeling van de handelsnederzetting Tiel vanaf de 10e eeuw.1 Hierbij zijn zowel resten van het havengebied als verschillende zone's van de nederzetting onderzocht. Daarnaast zijn reeds in de 50er jaren de sporen van de voorlopers van de huidige Sint-Maartenskerk onderzocht.
Tijdens de opgraving op het Bleekveld zijn aanvullende gegevens verzameld over het gebied dat achter de haven en het handelskwartier was gesitueerd.
Op het terrein zijn twee parallelle opgravingsputten aangelegd die, hoewel ze niet ver van elkaar verwijderd waren, een zeer verschillend beeld hebben opgeleverd.
In de eerste put, gelegen langs de Schoolstraat, werden slechts enkele grondsporen, voornamelijk greppels, aangetroffen. Deze sporen dateren voor het grootste deel uit de 10e/11e eeuw en lijken erop te wijzen dat dit deel van het terrein in die periode niet erg intensief werd gebruikt en deel uitmaakte van de overgangszone van de nederzetting naar een achtergelegen, meer open gebied.
In de tweede opgravingsput zijn de resten van een huiserf teruggevonden, waarop in twee fasen een gebouw heeft gestaan. Achter en naast de gebouwen lagen een groot aantal kuilen, waarvan vele met mest waren opgevuld, en enkele waterputten, die de indruk geven dat we hier met een relatief open bebouwing te maken hebben in het agrarische deel van de nederzetting. Dit open karakter lijkt ook in de volgende perioden te zijn blijven bestaan. Op het terrein zijn een aantal (beer)kuilen uit de late 14e/vroege 15e eeuw en de late 15e/vroege 16e eeuw aangetroffen. In deze periode behoorde het terrein waarschijnlijk bij de bezittingen het Sint-Agnietenklooster en was het perceel gedeeltelijk als boomgaard in gebruik. Daarnaast werd het terrein voor het bleken van wasgoed gebruikt. Deze functie wordt nog weerspiegeld in de naam van de straat ten noorden een oosten van het terrein en het toponiem van dit blok.
In 1604 werden op het Bleekveld woningen gebouwd en uit deze bewoningsfase stammen een tweetal waterputten. In de 19e eeuw werd een riool aangelegd dat in de zuidelijke gracht afwaterde en dit riool bleef tot in het begin van de 20e eeuw in gebruik.

Excavations, architectural survey and documentary research are combined to illuminate the histories of the churches at Barton Bendish, Guestwick and Framingham Earl.
At Barton Bendish, extensive excavation of All Saints’ showed seven constructional phases between 1100 and 1600. Finds include painted window glass, lead cames, floor and roof tiles, as well as objects from the graves and coffin furniture. Human bone analysis gives information on burials ranging from the early 11th to the 18th century. Architectural descriptions of the two standing churches at Barton Bendish are given, and the architectural development of all three churches is compared diagrammatically by period.
Excavation revealed the plan of the 11th-century church of St Peter at Guestwick. Only the tower still stands, north of the later medieval church. At St Andrew’s, Framingham Earl, limited excavations beyond the east end revealed the apsidal chancel of the first phase.
A fine collection of photographs, illustrations of architectural features and elevations of towers and walls, combined with the clarity of description and phasing, make this an excellent contribution to church studies.

The purpose of this study is to present the small bronze, copper, tin and lead findings that were recovered from the area of the royal palace of Buda during the last few decades, mostly by works led by László Gerevich  and currently kept in the Budapest History Museum. It can be said, that the nature of the royal capital is implied by the large number and diversity of metallic finds and by the unique pieces (incised copper plates, key ring, label fonts etc.).

Tijdens het laatste kwart van vorige eeuw werd in de oude stadskern van Geraardsbergen regelmatig kleinscha lig bodemonderzoek ondernomen. De opgravingen werden geleid door Etienne Borremans (1). jammer genoeg zijn deze onderzoeken weinig gedocumenteerd en zijn er geen opgravingsverslagen, aantekeningen of plannen gemaakt. To ch is het nuttig om het archeologisch materiaal dat hierbij aan het licht kwam even in de kijker te plaatsen. In dit artikel worden een aantal kleine huishoudelijke voorwerp en besproken, die meestal uit been, klei of metaal zijn vervaardigd (2).

In der Winterthurer Obergasse konnte ein
äusserst bedeutsamer Lederfund aus dem 13. Jh. geborgen
werden. Zudem unterstreichen bemerkenswerte Befunde
zum Stadtbach und zu einer Teuchelleitung des 13. Jh. die
Bedeutung von Rettungsgrabungen im Gassenbereich. Als
das wohl in der Zeit um 1200 angelegte Bett des Stadtbachs
zugeschüttet wurde und man das Gassenniveau anhob, bot
sich für die Anwohnerinnen und Anwohner die Gelegenheit,
Abfälle zu entsorgen. Darunter befanden sich auch Lederteile
von sicher 32, möglicherweise gar 37 Schuhen. Belegt
sind namentlich zwei Modelle von Schuhen mit hohem
Schaft, die im 13. Jh. getragen wurden. Der vorzügliche
Erhaltungszustand erlaubte sogar die Rekonstruktion von
10 Schuhen. Ein Schuh zeigte noch deutliche Spuren eines
wohl angeborenen Fussleidens seines Trägers. Lederabfälle
belegen die Tätigkeit von Schuhmachern und Flickschustern.
Freilich ist anhand der Funde nicht zu bestimmen, ob alle
Lederabfälle aus einer Werkstatt oder von verschiedenen
Betrieben stammen. Somit bleibt unklar, ob der Winterthurer
Schuhmacher auch Schuhe flickte oder ob die Flickschusterei
einen eigenständigen Berufsstand verkörperte. Der
Zeitpunkt der Entsorgung lässt sich anhand von C14-Daten
der unmittelbar danach gebauten Teuchelleitung in die
2. Hälfte des 13. Jh. datieren und ist im Einklang mit der
typologischen Datierung der Schuhe.

Les Rencontres internationales Instrumentum sur le thème Les modes de transport dans l'Antiquité et au Moyen Âge. Mobiliers d'équipement et d'entretien des véhicules terrestres, fluviaux et maritimes se sont déroulées du 14 au 16 juin 2017, au Musée départemental de l’Arles antique (Arles, Bouches-du-Rhône, FR). L’objectif était d’aborder la thématique du transport des personnes et des biens, par le prisme des vestiges archéologiques mobiliers.
Les contributions rassemblées dans ce volume portent sur des sites divers (habitats, sépultures, voies et zones portuaires) localisés en France, avec quelques incursions à l’échelle européenne, en Belgique et en Italie. Elles concernent l’Antiquité et le Moyen Âge, avec parfois une vision d’ensemble sur le temps long, en diachronie.
Une première partie est consacrée au transport terrestre et prend en compte les véhicules (architecture et garnitures) et les montures (harnachement et attelage). La seconde partie concerne le transport par voies d’eau, en milieu fluvial et maritime, la mise en mouvement des embarcations, les pièces d’accastillage et d’ancrage, l’outillage d’entretien et de navigation.

Cet ouvrage offre au lecteur un aperçu inhabituel des modes de transport à différentes époques en accordant une place privilégiée aux « petits mobiliers » mis au jour sur les sites archéologiques, afin d’une part de permettre leur reconnaissance et leur interprétation, et d’autre part de visualiser par des restitutions et des expérimentations, leur place et leur rôle dans l’équipement et l’usage des véhicules, qu’ils soient terrestres, fluviaux ou maritimes.

This poster aims to explain, to the wider world of the Digital Humanities, the ambition and approach of Artefacts, a Cnrs project held at the University of Lyons 2 (artefacts.mom.fr) in collaboration with a group of c. 120 specialists around the world.

This monograph examines one specific hoard horizon, which is connected to the Mongol invasion of Hungary (1241-42). With this catastrophic event, the historical context is both well-known and much discussed by contemporaries and modern scholars. This opportunity to examine material connected to a sole event, but across a broad spectrum of geographical space and social class, is unique for hoard horizons in Hungary, and, for that matter, in Europe. Though this study focuses on hoards connected to the Mongol invasion, it is also relevant beyond this specific context. The work addresses issues concerning hoard finds and material culture, and examines how finds are related when found in different contexts (a hoard, grave, or settlement feature), thus the questions raised and conclusions reached are important for other medieval hoard finds. By comparing hoards related to a single historical event to a contemporaneous site – containing a village, a church, and a cemetery – assessments can be made regarding how hoards reflect social issues such as stratification, wealth, status, and fashion.
