"De 1442 à 1501, les Aragonais occupent le trône napolitain. Grâce à une riche documentation textuelle et iconographique, cet ouvrage retrace la construction de l’imaginaire monarchique dans le royaume de Naples, puis sa diffusion dans les cours alliées et ennemies. Les portraits physiques des cinq rois de la branche aragonaise de Naples, ainsi que leurs portraits symboliques, notamment héraldique et emblématique, permettent l’étude de l’incarnation d’une identité napolitaine. Au-delà du corps royal, l’unité de la Couronne se dit aussi dans les portraits des serviteurs de l'État et ceux de la familia royale, tout comme dans les rituels, la mise en scène des résidences royales et ducales, et par la création d’un nouveau visage topographique de la capitale et du royaume.
L’expression de la souveraineté s’inscrit dans un vaste mouvement méditerranéen, envisagé des années 1420 au XVIIe siècle, de Valence à Naples, Florence, Ferrare, Barcelone ou Marseille. Le mécénat des rois de Naples et de leurs proches, ainsi que leur choix iconographiques, apparaissent respectueux des traditions aragonaises, angevines et souabes, mais aussi résolument modernes en dialogue avec les Flandres, l’Espagne et l’Italie contemporaines. Seule monarchie de la péninsule, ces vaincus de l’histoire, déchus lors des Guerres d’Italie, lèguent à l’Europe moderne le triomphe et le portrait à l’antique, la chronique monumentale, le portrait de ville et le portrait monétaire."

Postfazione al celebre libro di Luciano Bellosi, tesa a ricostruire l'orizzonte culturale e di metodo dell'autore al momento della genesi e della strutturazione dell'opera (fine anni sessanta-inizio anni settanta del Novecento), nonché la sua ricezione nel tempo.

In studies of recent decades about the origins of the Trecento chapel annexed to the church of San Galgano at Montesiepi, and about the commission of its mural paintings by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, two theses have clashed. The opposing arguments come to different conclusions about the date and the meaning of the frescoes. The reconstruction of the imagery in the triptych by Niccolò di Segna, once on the chapel’s altar, and hagiographic research on San Galgano, demonstrate that the small altar-piece was destined from its conception for the chapel of San Galgano on Monte Siepi. The inscription, once on the frame of the triptych’s central panel, becomes a primary source in this case. It declared that the patron of the painting, and of the entire chapel − both completed in 1336 − was Ristoro da Selvatella, an oblate devoted to San Galgano and associated with the familia of monks at the Cistercian abbey in the Val di Merse. Moreover, stylistic aspects of the frescoes are coherent with those of works realized by the great painter during the 1330s; one must keep in mind that Ambrogio Lorenzetti is documented at the abbey of San Galgano precisely in August 1334. //

In merito alla genesi della cappella trecentesca annessa alla chiesa di San Galgano sul Monte Siepi e alla commissione dei dipinti murali di Ambrogio Lorenzetti si sono scontrate negli studi degli ultimi decenni due tesi contrapposte, che hanno condotto a differenti conclusioni riguardo alla datazione e al significato degli affreschi. La ricostruzione del programma d’immagini del trittico di Niccolò di Segna un tempo sull’altare della cappella e lo scavo nella tradizione agiografica relativa a San Galgano permettono di dimostrare che l’altarolo fu destinato fin dall’origine alla cappella di San Galgano sul Monte Siepi. Assume dunque valore di fonte primaria l’iscrizione un tempo sulla cornice del pannello centrale del trittico, la quale dichiarava che committente del dipinto e dell’intera cappella, completati nel 1336, fu Ristoro da Selvatella, un oblato votatosi a San Galgano e aggregato alla familia dei monaci dell’abbazia cistercense della val di Merse. Del resto, i caratteri stilistici degli affreschi sono coerenti con quelli delle opere realizzate dal grande pittore nel corso degli anni trenta del Trecento; e si deve tener conto che Ambrogio Lorenzetti è documentato proprio presso l’abbazia di San Galgano nell’agosto del 1334.

Nella prima metà del Trecento Siena raggiunse il culmine della potenza economica e del suo sviluppo demografico. S’iniziavano solo a intravedere alcune avvisaglie della crisi che l’avrebbe colpita a metà secolo e nei decenni successivi. In quel momento la città decise di dotarsi di una nuova cattedrale, ampliando grandiosamente quella esistente, ricostruita nel secolo precedente: ciò avrebbe fatto del duomo di Siena una delle chiese più grandi dell’intera cristianità. S’iniziò con un ampliamento della parte posteriore, costruendo nella piana di Vallepiatta un nuovo battistero e prevedendo di far sviluppare sopra di esso due campate di estensione del ‘vecchio’ duomo. Ma nel 1339, dopo accese discussioni e a maggioranza non amplissima, il Consiglio generale cittadino deliberò di ricostruire interamente la chiesa. Vi si lavorò per più di quindici anni, ma una serie di calamità (la peste nera, la sfavorevole congiuntura economica, i problemi statici che si manifestarono nelle aree già costruite) condussero al fallimento del progetto. La nuova cattedrale rimase una grandiosa opera incompiuta, le cui parti superstiti si stagliano ancora oggi contro il cielo di Siena.
Il libro è dedicato all’insieme di questa sfortunata vicenda. E, più in dettaglio, all’analisi del procedere della fabbrica e allo studio del rivestimento lapideo e del corredo di sculture del duomo nuovo. Così facendo, si schiudono di fronte ai nostri occhi pratiche di cantiere innovative, lo speciale status che assunse il capomaestro in quest’impresa, i diversi ruoli dei maestri di pietra.

The vicissitudes of the Siena cathedral building site and two particular commissions in the summer and autumn of 1356 make it possible to take steps towards the identification of the sculptural corpus of Michele di Nello, a "master of stone" hitherto unknown but who, thanks to the documentation of the time, can be identified as an important figure on the Sienese artistic scene in the aftermath of the Black Death of 1348. Starting from the sculptures of the cathedral building, it is possible to identify his activity in the field of wood-carving, thus sketching in a more articulate way the story of this new actor on the stage of 14th-century sculpture in Siena.

La Commedia ms. 9 della Biblioteca Antica del Seminario di Padova, codice perugino del XIV secolo, presenta un corredo illustrativo costituito dai tre frontespizi di cantica miniati, da un capolettera istoriato per il XXXIII canto del Paradiso e da iniziali di canto decorate. Pur rientrando in una tipologia illustrativa del poema dantesco di ampia diffusione, il ms. 9 si distingue per alcune insolite scelte iconografiche, che intendo analizzare nel mio intervento, tentando di individuarne i modelli e chiarirne il significato.

Redazione rivista fino al Buongoverno è stata caricata come 'Costituzionalismo medievale a Siena, la Madonna Regina della Repubblica' (2019) alla sezone 'Siena città'.
Questa relazione fu inviata a Christian Lauranson ad aprile del 2015 (e caricata in Session) in seguito al convegno di Lione del dicembre del 2014 sulle Immagini del potere.
Purtroppo Christian è deceduto lo scorso 1 aprile in un tragico incidente di auto.

È stata identificata in una collezione privata un’inedita testa, grande al naturale, di una qualità e una bellezza straordinarie, che raffigura probabilmente un Apostolo. Questo studio la riconosce come un’opera autografa di Nicola Pisano, eseguita nel periodo che si definisce della sua prima maturità, intorno al 1258, ovvero quando stava portando a termine il terz’ultimo dei rilievi del pulpito del Battistero di Pisa, la Presentazione al Tempio. Attenzione speciale è riservata ai procedimenti tecnici, alle modalità d’impiego degli strumenti, alla logica innovativa con cui questi ultimi sono impiegati per conseguire un preciso risultato formale, al rapporto con le possibilità concrete di percezione. Se ne mostrano i legami, insieme tecnici e stilistici, con le opere più precoci (come la Testa muliebre in pirite) e con quelle che segnano le tappe della sua affermazione in Toscana: le Teste-mensole della cupola della Cattedrale di Siena, dettagli della lunetta lucchese e il grande repertorio figurativo del pulpito pisano, completato intorno al 1259-1260.
Se ne indagano infine la natura materiale, la possibile funzione e collocazione originarie, mostrando come anch’essa – al pari di non poche opere di questo sommo scultore – appaia “perturbante” nei confronti di conoscenze acquisite, attese, serie tipologiche e documenti.

“Spregiudicata misura”: Technique, Style and Form in a Previously Unpublished Sculpture by Nicola Pisano

A previously unpublished life size head (private collection) of extraordinary quality and beauty, probably representing an Apostle, is attributed by the author to Nicola Pisano. The piece is datable to his early maturity, around 1258, at the time he was completing the third relief of the pulpit for the Baptistery in Pisa, representing Presentation in the Temple. Special attention is given to the technical procedures, the modalities of the use of the instruments, the innovative logic with which the latter were used to achieve a specific formal result, and to the relationship with the concrete possibilities of perception. The technical and stylistic ties with earlier works (such as the pyrite Female Head) and creations that mark the stages of his successful career in Tuscany, are shown, i.e., the corbel heads of the cupola of the Siena Cathedral, details of the Lucca lunette, and the great figural repertory of the Pisa pulpit, completed around 1259–1260. Finally, the author also investigates the material characteristics and possible original function and location, showing how the new head, on par with not a few other works by this master sculptor, seems “perturbing” in comparisons with acquired knowledge, expectations, typological series and documents.

La tradition philosophique antique et, surtout, le néo-platonisme ont eu un impact décisif et permanent sur la culture médiévale, en particulier sur l'architecture et les arts figurés. C'est ainsi que Carol Heitz, par exemple, et ses prédécesseurs ont démontré que l'abbatiale Saint-Michel de Hildesheim a été construite selon les principes exposés par Boèce dans son Institution arithmétique : l'évêque Bernward, brillant mathématicien qui participa à l'élaboration du plan de l'église, était en possession d'un exemplaire de cet ouvrage dont il fit réaliser la copie 1 . Dans d'autres cas, notamment en iconographie, on ne peut que suspecter la signification néoplatonicienne de certains thèmes, sans pouvoir identifier avec précision la source qui servit d'inspiration à leur concepteur, ni les modalités de transmission des principes ainsi figurés.

Suo oggetto di studio sono gli stemmi, espressioni figurate dell’i den tità che, comparse alla metà del XII secolo, si diffusero in modo rapido e capillare in tutta l’Europa. Questi segni costituiscono uno strumento di conoscenza indispensabile per lo storico e, ancor di più, per lo storico dell’arte, cui si rivolge in primo luogo questo libro. Gli stemmi non servono solo alla datazione, al riconoscimento della committenza o delle vicende collezionistiche di un’opera, ma ne illuminano il significato e il contesto di produzione. Elemento essenziale della comunicazione visiva nelle società medievali, ci informano sulla mentalità e le abitudini percettive della committenza e del pubblico. Attraverso lo studio di alcuni casi esemplari, i saggi riuniti in questo volume dimostrano come l’araldica assolva a un indispensabile compito ermeneutico per la storia dell’arte.

Ce volume est issu des journées d’étude organisées au Kunstihistorisches Institut de Florence et à la Scuola Normale Superiore de Pise en 2011. Il présente un nouveau approche méthodologique dans les études héraldiques, un domaine de recherche qui a été longtemps négligé ou abandonné dans les mains d’érudits et amateurs. L’héraldique est la science qui étudie les armoiries, signes figurés d’identité qui sont apparus au milieu du XIIe siècle et se sont répandus de façon rapide et ramifiée dans toute l’Europe. Ces signes constituent un outil de connaissance indispensable pour l’historien et, plus encore, pour l’historien de l’art, auquel s’adresse prioritairement ce livre. Les armories ne permettent pas seulement de connaître la datation d’une œuvre ou l’identité de ses commanditaires et de ses possesseurs ; elles permettent d’en comprendre la valeur et la fonction, et d’en reconstruire le contexte de production. Eléments essentiels de la communication par images dans les sociétés du bas Moyen Âge, les armoiries nous livrent des informations précieuses sur les mentalités et les attitudes perceptives des commanditaires et de leur public. Par le biais de quelques études de cas, les articles réunis dans ce volume mettent alors en exergue comme l’héraldique soit un instrument herméneutique indispensable pour l’histoire de l’art.

Nel 1356 fu realizzato un ampio ciclo di sculture per la parte alta della facciata del battistero di Siena, poi rimasta incompiuta. Era una serie di “teste grandi”, ci dicono i documenti. Se ne sono conservate soltanto otto: delle fascinose teste maschili e femminili, burbere ed espressionistiche alcune, dolci, sottili, delicate le altre. Le eseguirono cinque diversi scultori, sotto la direzione di Domenico d’Agostino, il capomaestro del momento nel cantiere del duomo. Si chiamavano Niccolò di Cecco del Mercia, Giovannino di Cecco, Paolo di Matteo, Michele di Nello e Domenico di Vanni: maestri che, almeno alcuni, tornano ora ad avere un’identità come scultori. Il volumetto accompagna l'esposizione al pubblico delle sculture negli ambienti sottostanti il duomo di Siena.

Comparative study on the iconography of the Annunciation in Byzantine and Western European art, based on my second doctoral thesis (1994, Doctorat de l’Université, Paris I Sorbonne-Panthéon). For this monograph I received the Maria Theohari Prize (Έπαθλο Μαρία Θεοχάρη) for the best publication on Byzantine art in 2008.

The paper is included into the book "Percorsi di conoscenza e tutela. Studi in onore di Michele D'Elia" edited by the art historian Francesco Abate. The article is about one of the most important and best preserved Romanesque monuments in Italy: the Benedictine church of San Michele Arcangelo in Sant'Angelo in Formis. After a brief description of the historical events that led to its construction, I have analyzed in detail the architectural structure of the church, together with its decorative elements, such as one of the most intact fresco cycles of the whole Romanesque painting in Western Europe.

The text analyzes the program of paintings (first half of the 12th century) located in the palace chapel of the Moravian princes in the Premyslid dynasty. It is interesting to woven into the universal, Christian history, the dynastic legend of Premislids of a pagan character.

It's a popular work about one of the most important and best preserved Romanesque buildings in Italy: the Benedictine Basilica of Sant'Angelo in Formis, in the surroundings of Caserta. After a brief description of the historical eventsthat led to its construction, I've analized carefully the architectural structure, together with its decorative elements, including one of the most intact fresco cycles of the whole Romanesque painting in Western Europe.

Per quasi due secoli l’altare principale della cattedrale fu caratterizzato dall’imponente Maestà di Duccio (1308-1311). Nel 1506 il prelievo del tabernacolo bronzeo del Vecchietta dalla chiesa della Santissima Annunziata non rappresentò solo un generico rinnovamento, peraltro attuato col reimpiego di un’opera in bronzo vecchia più di trent’anni: fu spinto evidentemente dalla volontà di re-indirizzare il piano iconografico complessivo del Duomo – fino ad allora incentrato sulla figura della Vergine e su quelle dei quattro santi “avvocati” (S. Savino, S. Ansano, S. Vittore, S. Crescenzio) – verso una tematica eucaristica.

Gaston III, comte de Foix, vicomte de Béarn, surnommé Fébus, a forgé lui-même sa propre renommée. Il a choisi ce surnom emblématique, Fébus, l'a intégré à son cri de guerre (Febus avant !), l'a apposé sur ses manuscrits, l'a tracé dans sa signature autographe, l'a fait graver sur ses florins d'or (Febus comes) ou dans la pierre de ses châteaux (Febus me fe). Utilisées seules ou combinées, ces marques personnelles ainsi que les pièces poétiques chantées, les documents d'archives, les chroniques ont fabriqué et relayé la gloire fébusienne, participant à la fascination des contemporains pour ce prince à la personnalité ambivalente.

The Chiaravalle Cross, a masterpiece of Mediaeval goldsmithery, went under restoration in 2016. This was a unique opportunity to undertake an in-depth multidisciplinary study. Several issues were addressed, as for example the chronology of the Cross, lacking any official document about it. The scientific investigations included in situ and laboratory measurements, and the analyses, part of a multidisciplinary protocol, completely characterized the gemstones adorning the Cross, the cameos, the gold, silver, jasper and glass parts, to derive indications on their provenance, authenticity and dating issues. All the results were shared with the whole collaboration of experts, which included art historians, a restorer, a conservator, a scholar in ancient glyptic, gemologists, archaeometallurgists, physicists and scientists in a very fruitful exchange of knowledge. This work is an example of a real multidisciplinary research, gathering good practices in the study of a complex piece of art.

The Central Archives of Turin University preserve many personal fonds of alumni and professors. This paper provides a survey of these private archives, focusing on Enrico Castelnuovo’s Papers. During his sixty-year career as professor at the Universities of Lausanne and Turin, and at the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa, the historian of art criticism Enrico Castelnuovo (1929-2014) encouraged the renewal of the discipline, outlining new clues deduced from other subjects, such as Geography and Social History. The essay describes the overall structure and consistency of Castelnuovo’s fonds, private library and photo archive, acquired in 2016.

The contribution once again highlights the opportunity to tackle the study of historical building in a long-term perspective, highlighting the contribution that can come from the study of archive sources if interpreted in the light of renewed readings of material evidence. At the same time as the restoration works that at the beginning of the second decade of this century involved the exterior of the cathedral of San Cerbone in Massa Marittima (facing of the tribune, part of the roof) and some portions of the interior (presbytery, left aisle chapels), a new description of the state of conservation of the building is presented. The report and the relative correspondence were prepared in the 1830s by the engineer of the Circondario (Massa district) on behalf of the "Commissione granducale per il restauro delle chiese parrocchiali". These reports were drawn up in order to ascertain the state of conservation of the buildings of worship. The baptismal font of Giroldo da Como, defined in the report as "a large pile excavated in octagonal form in a solid square figure in travertine" of 1267, and the urn containing the relics of San Cerbone, a work by Goro di Gregorio dated 1324, are also remembered. It is interesting to note that the statuettes of saints and prophets - in the report only ten and not eleven - were not originally placed in the choir, as claimed by twentieth-century literature, but were placed between the columns that supported the table of the high altar, resulting already in relation to the urn in 1835, the year in which the report was drawn up.

Notre contribution se propose d’analyser le programme iconographique inédit d’un manuscrit des Décrétales de Grégoire IX à l’usage de l’université de Toulouse conservé aux Archives Nationales de la Torre do Tombo à Lisbonne pour montrer quelles sont les particularités et les spécificités de ce programme ainsi que le message que ce programme se propose de véhiculer en relation avec le texte juridique qu’il introduit. Les Décrétales de la Torre do Tombo nous permettent aussi d’ajouter encore un élément important à la connaissance des relations entre la France méridionale et le Portugal au Moyen Âge.

Our contribution proposes to analyse the iconographic program of a manuscript of the Decretals of Gregory IX used by the University of Toulouse and kept in the National Archives of Torre do Tombo in Lisbon, in order to show what is special and specific in this program and what is the message that the program intends to convey in relation to the legal text that it introduces. The Decretals of Torre do Tombo also allow us to add another important element in knowledge of cultural relationships between southern France and Portugal in the Middle Ages.
