Hindi Novel

In his monograph, Nikhil Govind argues that the Hindi novel of the 1930s, 40s and 50s became an important medium in which authors, who were also political activists or/and had experienced imprisonment, could reflect their aspirations and doubts about the ideals of the freedom struggle in India. "Between Love and Freedom" carves out "the bi-directionality of literary and political discourse" (p.19) by studying the figure of the revolutionary in the works of Agyeya, Yashpal and Jainendra Kumar. The three authors use sexuality as a comprehensive aspect to pose bigger questions about the nature of revolutionary freedom.

This paper alludes to works written during the initial period of novel writing in Hindi and while analysing one of them – Mādhavī-Mādhav vā Madan-Mohinī (Madhavi and Madhav, Madan and Mohini) published in 1909 – it seeks to explore, firstly, how crucial the author’s choice of the narrative mode is for the novel itself and, secondly, what the advantages and limitations of this form of narration are.

The aim of this article is to present Badi-uz-zaman's novel "The Death of a Rat" which is usually referred to a the first fantasy novel in Hindi language. The analysis revolves around the innovative elements of style and topic introduced by Badi-uz-zaman in his work. The introductory part of the article shades light on basic facts regarding the novel of Badi-uz-zaman, the language used by and the portrayal of characters. This section is followed by a brief summary of the content of the work. The essential part of the analysis is focused on the peculiar fantasy features of the book, such as fantastic events, depiction of characters, mysterious places and items, metamorphosis of the protagonist and the motif of a rat. The article concludes with some remarks of a few noted critics of Hindi literature concerning the analysis and interpretation of this novel.

The paper deals with the approach of Hindi literature to understanding the nature of God through the realization of the nature of Life and Death.
