Heron

Observation d'un héron cendré (Ardea cinerea Linnaeus, 1758), du 28 septembre au 3 octobre 2017 sur le site INRA de La Grande ferrade à Villenave d'Ornon Le Centre de recherche INRA Nouvelle Aquitaine-Bordeaux est sis sur le Domaine de la Grande Ferrade, situé au sud de Bordeaux sur la rive gauche, entre Talence et Bègles, en Gironde. Ce site est d'une superficie d'environ 60 ha, ceint par 3 axes routiers (Chemin de Leysotte à l'Ouest, Avenue Edouard Bourlaux [longée par l'Eau Bourde, affluent de la Garonne, d'une longueur de 23 km et qui prend sa source à Cestas] au Sud et la rue Gustave Flaubert au Nord). Le campus est entouré d'un domaine équestre (L'éperon d'Ornon au NO) et du Domaine de Sourreil (grand parc de 7 ha, anciennement propriété privée laissée des années à l'abandon et maintenant propriété de la commune de Villenave d'Ornon, regroupant une trentaine d'espèces arboricoles et arbustives, des clairières laissées en friches et des cheminements piétonniers terre-gravier sous le couvert des arbres, l'ensemble étant géré de manière raisonnée, sans coupe abusive, foisonnant de variétés ornithologiques, entomologiques et de petits mammifères. Une zone d'activité commerciale est mitoyenne de ce parc et fait face au domaine de la Ferrade (SO). Un lotissement borde le site de la Ferrade au secteur N-E. Deux autres domaines arborés sont situés à équidistance (environ 2 km) de La Grande Ferrade, le Bois de Thouars et le parc de Mussonville. Au SO du domaine sont situés l'administration et les Unités de recherche ainsi que leurs serres. Au NO ainsi qu'au N-E on trouve un deux petits bois (pins et chênes), une parcelle expérimentale de châtaigniers, le reste du domaine est planté de vignes et sur une zone NE, on trouve un jardin partagé (permaculture) et le CLSH du site (préfabriqué et aires de jeux dans un lieu bordé de feuillus (chênes, marronniers, arbustes). « Enfin les quelques fossés sillonnant le domaine et celui qui longe sa limite nord abritent un couvert dense de plantes plus ou moins aquatiques (massettes, alismas, souchets, jeunes saules...) ainsi que des buissons de ronces, une végétation qui y prolifère entre deux curages »-Trois années d'observations au domaine de la Grande Ferrade, article d' Olivier Le Gall, Thierry Candresse, Frédéric Revers, Le Courbageot 15 (1998), 29-32.

Sur plusieurs sceaux grecs d’époque classique, un héron est représenté en compagnie d’une femme. L’objectif de cet article est ainsi de fournir des éléments pour essayer de clarifier la signification de ce motif. Pour cela, il convient de tenir compte des motifs sur les matrices grecques présentant des hérons avec ou sans des personnages de femmes, mais aussi de l’iconographie des vases grecs des VIe-IVe siècles. Certains spécialistes ont perçu cet animal comme un marqueur permettant de reconnaître les appartements des femmes et en ont ainsi fait un attribut genré : l’oiseau construirait une différence entre espaces dévolus aux femmes et aux hommes. Néanmoins, les images des vases et des sceaux laissent percevoir la place du héron dans la figuration des échanges érotiques et des pratiques hétérosexuelles. Le héron illustre donc surtout les rapports des hommes et des femmes entre eux.

On several classical Greek seals, herons are represented alongside women. The aim of this text is to provide elements of explanation in order to clarify the meaning of this motif. For that purpose, we have to take into account the devices on the Greek seals showing herons with or without women, but also the Greek vase-painting of the sixth-fourth centuries BC. Some specialists saw this animal as a sign allowing everyone to recognize the women’s apartments and, thus, turned it into a gendered attribute: the bird would develop a difference between spaces allotted either to women or to men. However, the images on vases and seals suggest that the heron is a part of the figuration of erotic exchanges and heterosexual practices. Therefore, the heron rather denotes the interactions that men and women bind together.

Copes and partial endplates influence the resistance to lateral buckling of a steel beam. In order to quantify this influence, numerical research has been carried out with validated models. Full-scale laboratory tests carried out for the validation of the numerical models are described in the Annex to this paper. The research resulted in proposed reduction factors for the critical elastic buckling load of beams with various end connections. With the reduced elastic buckling load and the existing buckling curves the resistance of steel beams with copes and partial end plates can be determined.

In recent years, the durability of reinforced or prestressed concrete structures has become a main concern since engineers have to take into account the required service lifetime when selecting the concrete mixture and performing the structural design. A key parameter in durability predictions is the microstructure of the surface zone of concrete structures, i.e. the "covercrete", in particular the connectivity of the pores in the cement paste matrix because the easy of harmful substance, like chloride, enter to steel bar is determined by the connectivity of capillary pores in the concrete cover. In this paper, the connectivity of capillary pores in hardening cement-based system made of blended materials is studied numerically. The blended materials include blast furnace slag and limestone powder. In the numerical simulation, the hydration of the multi-components, i.e. cement particle and filler particle are considered. The stereological aspect, the interaction mechanism on both cement particle and filler particle, the basic rate equation and the influence factors are modeled. The simulated microstructure parameters, like capillary porosity and connectivity of capillary pores were analyzed based on the percolation theory. The simulation results were discussed and validated against experimental measurements. It is concluded that the connectivity of capillary pores can be manipulated by using different blended materials.

Proteases are found in every cell, where they recognize and break down unneeded or abnormal polypeptides or peptide-based nutrients within or outside the cell. Genome sequence data can be used to compare proteolytic enzyme inventories of different organisms as they relate to physiological needs for protein modification and hydrolysis. In this review, we exploit genome sequence data to compare hyperthermophilic microorganisms from the euryarchaeotal genusPyrococcus, the crenarchaeoteSulfolobus solfataricus, and the bacteriumThermotoga maritima. An overview of the proteases in these organisms is given based on those proteases that have been characterized and on putative proteases that have been identified from genomic sequences, but have yet to be characterized. The analysis revealed both similarities and differences in the mechanisms utilized for proteolysis by each of these hyperthermophiles and indicated how these mechanisms relate to proteolysis in less thermophilic cells and orga...

Regardless causes of climate change, changing climate parameters, such as higher temperature, amount and intensity of precipitation, different wind regime, will affect the durability of materials used in the building envelope, either individually or combined. The current paper evaluates possible trends and tendencies arising from these changing climate parameters on the durability of building materials in the Netherlands, based upon four scenario's of climate change developed by the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, KNMI (2006).

Waterbirds can move into and exploit new areas of suitable habitat outside of their native range. One such example is the little egret (Egretta garzetta), a piscivorous bird which has colonised southern Britain within the last 30 years. Yet, habitat use by little egrets within Britain, and how such patterns of habitat exploitation compare with native piscivores, remains unknown. We examine overlap in habitat preferences within a river catchment between the little egret and two native species, the grey heron (Ardea cinerea) and great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo). All species showed strong preferences for river habitat in all seasons, with other habitat types used as auxiliary feeding areas. Seasonal use of multiple habitat types is consistent with egret habitat use within its native range. We found strong egret preference for aquatic habitats, in particular freshwaters, compared with pasture and arable agricultural habitat. Egrets showed greater shared habitat preferences with herons, the native species to which egrets are most morphologically and functionally similar. This is the first study to quantify little egret habitat preferences outside of its native range.
