Greek Lexicography

The phenomenon of the Septuagint is a matter of interest for several areas of research – not only for Old Testament scholars, but also for researchers of Hellenistic Judaism, patristic exegesis, translation theory and practice, and others. What we all have in common is the text of the Septuagint. Unfortunately, our research is often so compartmentalized, that we do not know about each other’s work and cannot profit from it. The focus of this conference is on the text of the Septuagint studied from various aspects: its reconstruction, peculiarities of language, lexical semantics in their relationship with the Semitic background and within the Greek speaking world, whether Jewish or Christian. We hope that our differing approaches to the same matter will lead to mutual professional enrichment.

The journal publishes scientific articles on the problems of the Greek language, literature and culture throughout their historical existence: from Ancient Greek and Byzantine literature, culture and language to the Modern Greek period. The papers cover a wide range of topics on history, literary criticism, linguistics, ethnolinguistics, folklore and post folklore of Greece, as well as on the reception of Greek images and ideas in Russia and Europe.

In the Russian lexicography there is a tradition of the syntax of historical and morphological phraseological dictionaries of Russian language (see Russian Phraseology, edit. Mikhailov etc) which is rather successful for using in the syntax of bilingual phraseological dictionary for the purpose to give more opportunities to the native speaker of the language-skill for realizing the use of phraseological units in the complex of language-source. For the right syntax of the lemma  for each PU we suggest, first, to find the kernel of PU which depends on its basic lexema, then to categorize each PU according to its semantic and then to give information (in language-skill) about the category of style of PU, the historical and/or cultural meaning of PU, the morphological syntax, possible synonyms and/or versions in the structure of PU, and also the translation of PU to the language skill with appropriate example from the corpus of texts in the language-source.

A comparison between the Greek and Latin vocabulary on textiles in the house (curtains, tapestry, cushions etc.) and the objects presented in paintings, drawings and inscriptions, and preserved in ancient houses. As test cases are presented luxury beddings in the Zenon archive (3rd cent. BC) and monastic and church inventories (christian Egypt)

Current scholarship typically treats the wilderness temptation account as a visionary experience, symbolic description, or dramatization, identifying it as haggadic midrash rather than historical narrative.  Absence of Old and New Testament analogs for the temptation prompts a search for parallels in literature of the Second Temple Period and Apostolic Age, and a direct affinity with the psychological dualism within some of these texts is demonstrated. Early Tannaitic descriptions of disputation with a personified ‘evil inclination’ (yetzer ha ra), are shown to be more relevant analogs than later Talmudic accounts of rabbis tempted by Satan. The combination of this socio-historical evidence provides strong support for a reading of the wilderness temptation as an account of Jesus’ internal struggle with his own desires, rather than a battle of will against a supernatural evil being.

The standard lexicon of early Christian Greek claims that the word Hebrais “the Hebrew language” in the New Testament actually refers to “the Aramaic spoken at that time in Palestine.” This opinion appears to be based a century-old hypothesis that (1) Hebrais could mean either Aramaic or Hebrew at that time, and since (2) the average person could not understand Hebrew, (3) it must mean Aramaic rather than Hebrew in passages such as Acts 21–22. The present paper challenges the view that Hebrais(ti) could mean Aramaic at that time by (1) using an exhaustive list of all instances of this word group to show that Aramaic was consistently distinguished from Hebrew, and (2) by explaining the evidence to the contrary: Aramaic-looking words in John, Josephus and Philo that are said to be Hebraisti. The paper concludes that if Hebrais never demonstrably refers to Aramaic, BDAG and the NIV need revision.

The present study explores factors that influenced Ukrainian practice of
compiling etymological dictionaries in diachronic and synchronic aspects, its
connection with the wider cultural context. Regularity of the consequence of the stages
of lexicography, etymological lexicography included, is demonstrated and its
connection with establishing national state is showed.
The present study is aimed at metalinguistic analysis of Ukrainian and
European etymological lexicography methodological basis. Its main goal is to
explicate interdependencies between ideology (cultural, religious or scientific

narrative) and etymologizing patterns in etymological dictionaries, to reveal
reflexes of different scientific epochs in the present state of Ukrainian etymology.
Before etymological dictionary as distinctive genre of linguistic research
appeared, both lexicography and etymology have passed through several
evolutionary stages that coincided with changing of epistemes (according to
Michel Foucault), both having their origins in mythological view on the word as
magical force. Especially strong ties tied Byzantine and Byzantine-oriented
countries’ (such as Ukraine before XIX c.) lexicography and etymology with sacral
sphere. Both first Byzantine (e.g. Suda) and Ukrainian (e.g. that of P. Berynda)
dictionaries bore catechetical functions as well as first etymologizing practices of
these areas belonged to folklore rooted figura etymologica or ‘folk etymology’.
Ukrainian etymology in XIX c. combined results of comparative method
with focus on the inner form of a word (elaborated by O.O. Potebnya), that was
possible due to special attention to the language awareness immanent to folklore
(both O.O. Potebnya and P.Ya. Lukashevych were both linguists and folklorists).
Classical Indo-European etymological dictionaries did not succeed in
handling problem of heterogeneity of the languages they studied because of
methodological biases against material beyond Indo-European range. The
etymologists from the Slavic countries (S. Mladenov, V. Machek, O. Trubachev)
developed their own methodological approach concentrated on the heterogeneity of
the lexicon. Ukrainian school of etymological research (O.S. Melnychuk,
V.T. Kolomiyets, O.B. Tkachenko, A.P. Nepokupnyi etc.) elaborated these
problematic issues mainly ignored in other spheres of Indo-European studies, so
their results have meaning beyond the range of the Ukrainian studies.

In the context of etymological dictionaries of Slavic and other Indo-
European languages, compiled in XVII-XXI c., characteristic features of Ukrainian

etymological dictionaries is showed. Ukrainian etymological lexicography
(especially its monumental work ‘Etymological dictionary of the Ukrainian
language’ directed by acad. O.S. Melnychuk) combined positive aspects of the
methodological approaches developed in the classical Indo-European studies (keen
attention to phonetic correspondences) with innovations of the Slavic and
Ukrainian etymological schools (attention to pre- and non-Indo-European elements
in the lexicon). Also cultural role of the Ukrainian etymological lexicography
cannot be denied: the ‘Etymological dictionary of the Ukrainian language’
received world-wide appraisal of the linguists and augmented cultural prestige of
the Ukrainian language and Ukrainian studies.

El presente artículo se centra en el análisis semántico de la preposición διά en el griego del NT, siguiendo la metodología usada para la confección del Diccionario Griego-Español del Nuevo Testamento (DGENT). Por tanto, se trata de un intento de arrojar luz sobre los significados de esta preposición en el NT desde un enfoque semántico-estructural.
Nuestra intervención intenta paliar la escasa atención prestada al griego de la koiné y, en concreto, al utilizado para la composición del NT. Los más recientes estudios de sintaxis preposicional griega se han centrado principalmente en el griego clásico, a pesar de que fue en época helenística cuando se produjeron algunos de los cambios que más han modificado el sistema preposicional, debido al aumento considerable del número de locuciones prepositivas en lugar del uso simple de los casos.
El trabajo parte, asimismo, del hecho de que la preposición es, tal vez, la más ambigua, compleja y polisémica categoría gramatical, encontrándose expuesta, a menudo, a sutiles gradaciones de significado, por lo que para abordar su análisis es necesario partir de un enfoque eminentemente semántico, además de estructural. Las dificultades a las que se enfrenta el estudioso de este campo de la sintaxis son debidas, por una parte, a que el de la preposición griega constituye un sistema de gran complejidad, complementario del de los casos, ya que los sintagmas preposicionales componen un significado que no es otra cosa sino el resultado de la combinación del sentido de la preposición y de la noción relacional que expresa el caso. Así, se trata de un sistema que se encuentra a medio camino entre lo gramatical y lo lexical. Por otra, a que también influyen en el significado de una preposición otros elementos oracionales como el contenido léxico del núcleo del sintagma, el del predicado y otros factores contextuales.
Sin embargo, del examen de los diversos lemas propuestos para la preposición διά por los principales diccionarios dedicados al griego clásico y neotestamentario, es decir, los léxicos de Liddell-Scott & al. , F. Rodríguez Adrados & al., (DGE) , F. Zorell , J.H. Thayer & al.  y W. Bauer – F.W. Danker & al. (BDAG)  y Louw & Nida , se deduce que su estudio resulta insuficiente desde el punto de vista semántico, ya que en su mayoría constituyen léxicos bilingües tradicionales que siguen un criterio morfo-sintáctico y de uso, centrados, en definitiva, más en la sintaxis que en la semántica, y/o destinados a ofrecer equivalentes de traducción del griego a la lengua de destino, acompañados de información gramatical. Como consecuencia, demuestran en mayor o menor medida, falta de precisión en el análisis de un lexema dado en los diferentes contextos en que aparece.
Es reseñable, en este sentido, que los diccionarios citados parecen carecer de un método de análisis semántico llevado hasta sus última consecuencias que permita fijar claramente la distinción entre significado lexical y contextual, así como describir el significado de cada lexema, lo que les hace caer en incoherencias y contradicciones, de modo que no siempre cada apartado corresponde a una acepción distinta.
En cambio, el DGENT presenta una nueva forma de tratar los lexemas gracias, principalmente, a la aplicación sistemática de una rigurosa metodología de análisis semántico para la redacción de los lemas, desarrollada en las siguientes obras: Método de análisis semántico aplicado al griego del Nuevo Testamento  de Juan Mateos  y Metodología del Diccionario Griego-Español del Nuevo Testamento de Jesús Peláez . Esto hace posible el principal avance de este léxico, que lo diferencia del resto de diccionarios bilingües, es decir, la inclusión de una definición y su correspondiente traducción al castellano en la entrada de cada palabra analizada, así como la distinción sistemática entre ambas, tanto para el significado lexical como para sus diferentes acepciones, las cuales surgen por influjo contextual. En efecto, otra importante novedad lexicográfica de este diccionario es que explicita los factores contextuales que inciden en el cambio semántico de manera individualizada, partiendo del significado lexical o básico.

Así, en el análisis y redacción del lema de διὰ que se llevará a cabo, se seguirán las siguientes fases:
1) Confrontación de todos los pasajes (667) del corpus neotestamentario donde aparece la preposición, lo que permitirá determinar cuál es el significado lexical de διά, estableciendo su definición, es decir, una descripción de su significado lexical o básico.
2) Propuesta de traducción a lengua castellana de este primer significado.
3) A continuación, la metodología seguida hará posible incluso deducir las causas o factores contextuales (morfológicos, sintácticos o extra-lingüísticos) que suscitan el cambio de significado lexical y, por consiguiente, de traducción, cuando διὰ aparece en uno u otro contexto.
4) Finalmente, siguiendo los mismos pasos anteriores, se propondrá una definición y traducción de cada una de estas acepciones o significados contextuales.

En definitiva, en nuestra opinión, la aplicación del método de análisis semántico del DGENT permitirá no solo deducir de forma clara los diferentes significados, sino que revelará la existencia de acepciones de esta preposición que otros diccionarios consideran únicamente de forma sesgada o equivocada, por lo que los resultados de este trabajo supondrán un avance en el estudio y la sistematización de las funciones semánticas de las preposiciones en el griego del corpus neotestamentario.

Il commento alle testimonianze è inteso a valutarne la pertinenza o meno all'attività grammaticale di Filita, e, in caso positivo, a enuclearne il senso. Dovrebbe risultarne l'immagine di Filita kritikov " costituitasi nell'antichità. Il commento alle testimonianze e i relativi testi precedono l'introduzione, in quanto le conclusioni su Filita sviluppate in età moderna dipendono fortemente da quanto su di lui si è affermato nell'antichità.

(1) The correspondences between Ionic σίδη or σίβδη, Aeolic ξίμβᾱ, Doric (Cyrenaean) σίβδᾱ f. ‘pomegranate, Punica granatum L.’, Boeotian σίδᾱ f. ‘pomegranate (tree and fruit)’, also ‘a water plant, probably water-lilly, Nymphaea alba L.’, Attic σίδη f. ‘water-lily’, are carefully discussed in the paper. It is concluded that the words demonstrate certain Pre-Greek features, which cannot be treated as native.

(2) The comparison of Greek words for ‘pomegranate, Punica granatum L.’ (Gk. σίδᾱ, σίδη, σίβδᾱ, σίβδη, ξίμβᾱ f.) with Hittite GIŠšaddu(wa)- ‘a kind of fruit-tree’ indicates a possible borrowing of the Greek forms from an Anatolian source.

In the Greek-Latin lexicon at the end of his Ars grammatica Priscian displays a number of somehow fixed expressions to introduce the Latin syntactical constructions that he compares to the Greek ones. It is possible to recognize the constant value of the most frequent of such expressions. The comprehension of locutions introducing Latin lemmata and quotations gives us the possibility to understand which are the different kinds of linguistic resemblance between Greek lemmata and Latin equivalents and so to discover even the different levels of the structure of Priscian’s glossary. They range from simple verbal translations of Greek lemmata or quotations, to actual Latin lemmata meant to adhere to the Greek ones both for meaning and syntax, to additional lem- mata within the same language whose mention is due to semantic or syntacti- cal resemblances. The same values of these lexicographical expressions can be traced back even in the other books of the Ars, albeit the proportion of their frequency varies greatly from the glossary to the remaining books.
In a perspective which takes into account the incompleteness of Priscian’s lexicon it is possible to identify different typologies of voices, corresponding to as many different levels of completeness of the glossary.
In the second section of my paper I examine the issue of literal translations of Greek lemmata into Latin, trying to draw a distinction between mere literal versions and expressions meant to be real Latin lemmata in correspondance to the Greek ones. The first criterion followed in this analysis is the evaluation of linguistic propriety of Latin constructions. A Latin expression, which prove syntactically incorrect, is surely just a word by word translation of the Greek syntagm. If instead the Latin construction is linguistically proper, the presence or absence of further elements within a voice of the lexicon, such as additional grammatical remarks or literary quotations, alongside the simple Latin trans- lation, can demonstrate that Priscian actually meant such a syntagm as Latin equivalent of the Greek lemmata.
In the last section of the paper I give some examples of semantically improper verbal translations and I try to justify the akward lexical choices of the grammarian-translator by comparison with the Latin version of Greek words in other late-antique bilingual glossaries edited in the Corpus Glossariorum Latinorum, which comparison can prove decisive in almost one case (GL III 360, 15-16).

Este estudio que se publica ahora pero que se llevó a cabo en 1999 trata a partir de los datos del Diccionario de la Real Academia Española, ed. 1992, (DRAE) de ver qué palabras del vocabulario médico actual estaban en uso ya en la literatura griega médica antigua y en qué autores; se estudian en concreto 646 palabras que pueden clasificarse de entrada en dos grupos, las que pueden documentarse en la Edad Media y que de alguna forma estuvieron en uso sin interrupción, y las que fueron reintroducidas a partir del renacimiento cuando se editaron primero en griego y después se tradujeron al latín los textos más importantes de la literatura médica griega (Hipócrates, Dioscórides, Rufo, Sorano, Galeno, etc.).
Como resultados se observa que en Galeno encontramos la mayor parte de esas palabras; que al margen de él, los autores que influyeron en esta transmisión de vocabulario médico antiguo son: Hipócrates, Aristóteles, Teofrasto, Dioscórides, Sorano, Rufo y Plinio. Por otra parte llama la atención que el diccionario griego de referencia (Liddell-Scott-Jones) desconoce muchos de los usos médicos de vocabulario griego antiguo.

This paper analyses all the possible Linear B terms which can contain the root of alphabetic Greek *ξένϝος: “Foreigner, Guest, Host”: the adjective ke-se-nu-wi-ja, which appears in three tablets: KN Ld(1) 573.b, 574.b and 585.b, and its variant spelling ke-se-ne-wi-ja, recorded on KN Ld(1) 649.b, all of them in hand 116 and qualifying pa-we-a cloth; the adjective ke-se-ni-wi-jo, which occurs on the olive oil tablet PY Fr 1231.2, in hand 2; the personal name ke-se-nu-wo, appearing on the broken tablet PY Cn 286.1, in hand 1, which is included in a series recording cattle, and also two other problematic terms, often neglected in these studies: the form ]nu-wi-jo, on tablet PY Fr 1255, written by Class ii, which could be completed ke-se]nu-wi-jo, and the strange ze-ne-si-wi-jo, probably a personal name on tablet KN M(1) 720. The aim of my paper is to detail the use of this stem in Mycenaean Greek.

There is no doubt that the export of German exegetical tools and the refinement they experienced in the process of the translation and revision has proven immensely helpful in the past. To give just one example from the area of lexical semantics: BDAG has certainly replaced the German Bauer-Aland with regard to its linguistic quality. So, can similar things be said about the NIDNTTE?

Behind the New Testament lexicons of today lies a tradition dating back to the sixteenth century. Its true characteristics are not well known to most users. This book aims not only to give a history of the tradition but also to demonstrate its less satisfactory features, namely dependence on predecessors, the influence of translations, and methodological shortcomings. Besides offering criticism, the author suggests new goals that New Testament lexicography could set itself in the twenty-first century.

The article provides the first critical edition of ch. 11 (περὶ φύσεως ἀνθρωπίνης) of the late antique Latin-Greek glossary of the so-called Hermeneumata Celtis (Wien, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, suppl. gr. 43, ff. 22v-23v). A commentary compares each entry with the analogous pairs contained in the glossaries of the Corpus glossariorum Latinorum.

It is usually assumed that the festival of the Gymnopaidiai is linked with the battle of Hysiai, because according to ancient traditions the festival was founded in the year 668BC and the battle was fought in the previous year. The aim of this paper is to show that this link is wrong: none of the ancient sources on the Gymnopaidiai mentions Hysiai, whereas another battle is cited, that fought in Thyrea. The traditional belief in the link between the Gymnopaidiai and Hysiai is the consequence of a superficial reading of a passage of Sosibius (in Ath. 15.678b-c), writing in the 3rd or in the 2nd century BC. The text is highly problematic, but the questions on which this paper will focus are: how many festivals are involved? What are the connections between the choruses and the festivals? And most importantly: what battles are mentioned by Sosibius? In which battle did the dead commemorated during these festivals fall? Tackling these issues, in the first part of the paper I will question the historicity of the battle of Hysiai; in the second part I will try to distinguish different festivals in the passage of Sosibius; in the third part I will try to identify which battle of Thyrea is referred to by Sosibius and to understand if it is the same battle mentioned by a not at all negligible lexicographical tradition.

"The Etymologicum Symeonis is an important Byzantine dictionary, which was compiled in the first half of the twelfth century. It has been transmitted in two redactions: Etym. Sym. proper, and Magna Grammatica. The latter is a version of the Etym. Symeonis that has been enlarged, around the middle of the thirteenth century, on the basis of the Etymologicum Magnum. The first redaction is preserved in two manuscripts and the second in three mss. This edition of letters Γ–Ε is based upon a meticulous collation of the five manuscripts and also on a study of the primary sources used by the compiler of this dictionary (the unpublished Etym. Genuinum, Etym. Gudianum and other lexicographical texts).
While letters Α and Β were had been already published in 1969 (Sell) and 1972 (Gunther), the critical edition of this section of the Etym. Symeonis was a long-time desideratum in Classical and Byzantine studies, and opens up another part of this important text for scholarly research."

The Hebrew ‫צדקה‬ is translated using ἐλεημοσύνη in Deuteronomy 6:25 and 24:13, two important passages providing a rationale for law observance. Despite this match having been discussed in a number of studies, none address the reasons why ἐλεημοσύνη translates ‫צדקה‬ in these two passages and not elsewhere in the book. After reviewing a number of factors and explanations, including the semantic range of both Hebrew and Greek terms and their evolution in meaning during the postexilic period, an explanation is presented that takes into account the translation patterns of the book, illustrating how some shifts from the usual translation patterns can sometimes shed light on the theological conceptions of those responsible for the production of this translation.

Le terme hébreu ‫צדקה‬ est traduit par ἐλεημοσύνη en deux endroits en Deutéro-nome (6:25 et 24:13), deux textes importants du fait qu'ils expliquent les résultats de l'obéissance à la Torah. Bien que cette traduction ait été l'objet de plusieurs études, aucune n'aborde les raisons pour lesquelles ἐλεημοσύνη traduit ‫צדקה‬ dans ces deux passages et non ailleurs dans le livre. Après avoir passé en revue les diffé-rentes explications proposées, y compris la portée sémantique des termes hébreux et grecs ainsi que l'évolution de leur sens pendant la période postexilique, une alternative est avancée qui tient compte de la technique de traduction observée dans ce livre. Celle-ci illustre comment certains écarts dans les équivalences habituelles observées dans la traduction peuvent parfois mettre en lumière les conceptions théologiques de ceux qui en sont responsables.

Very soon after the invention of the printing press, in 1470, the editio princeps of Priscian's collected works sees the light in Venice.  In particular, this paper analyses the syntactic Greek-Latin lexicon (Instit. XVIII. 157-307) because it shows some peculiar characteristics:
• The so-called “graeca”, which represent the words-lemmata (although there are some lacunas)
• The loci classici, which are not reproduced entirely: some are transcribed some are not.
A contemporary edition (1470/71) is also printed in Rome, this latter edition shows the following characteristics:
• Some Greek words-lemmata (although book XVIII. 194 does not include any Greek term)
• The loci classici often missing.
In the following years, we can find further editions; however, they are not supported by a truly scientific philological method. These editiones in fact are often the reproduction of only one manuscript or a re-print of a previous edition with the addition of some corrections.
It is thanks to Politianus (1454-1494) that philology begins to become a scientific method that forces the publishers to adopt a more intellectual approach.
The 'giuntina' edition (Florence, 1525) shows the first attempt at applying a scientific method:
• The collation with a good manuscript allowed the editor to fill some gaps of the graeca
• The collation was only partial.
After two years, the 'aldina' edition (Venice, 1527) is based on a codex antiquissimus (as we can read in the title page and elsewhere). A careful examination of some passages shows that this edition is a collection of readings from previous editions and of those from the earliest manuscript.
This paper presents some synoptic examples from the mentioned editiones in order to show clearly the typical characteristics of the different editions.
Therefore, there are three main steps:
• 1470, the editio princeps, a fundamental masterpiece, which however contains lacunas and mistakes
• 1527, edition based on the earliest manuscript. In this edition the graeca are a collection of readings from the previous editions mixed together with readings from the chosen codex.
• 1855-59, edition by Hertz-Keil (Grammatici Latini series), edition that could be improved, but still remains the most valuable and reliable.
