Exceptionally preserved fossils provide crucial insights into extinct body plans and organismal evolution. Molluscs, one of the most disparate animal phyla, radiated rapidly during the early Cambrian period (approximately 535–520 million years ago (Ma)). The problematic fossil taxa Halkieria and Orthrozanclus (grouped in Sachitida) have been assigned variously to stem-group annelids, brachiopods , stem-group molluscs or stem-group aculiferans (Polyplacophora and Aplacophora), but their affinities have remained controversial owing to a lack of preserved diagnostic characters. Here we describe a new early sachitid, Calvapilosa kroegeri gen. et sp. nov. from the Fezouata biota of Morocco (Early Ordovician epoch, around 478 Ma). The new taxon is characterized by the presence of a single large anterior shell plate and polystichous radula bearing a median tooth and several lateral and uncinal teeth in more than 125 rows. Its flattened body is covered by hollow spinose sclerites, and a smooth, ventral girdle flanks an extensive mantle cavity. Phylogenetic analyses resolve C. kroegeri as a stem-group aculiferan together with other single-plated forms such as Maikhanella (Siphogonuchites) and Orthrozanclus; Halkieria is recovered closer to the aculiferan crown. These genera document the stepwise evolution of the aculiferan body plan from forms with a single, almost conchiferan-like shell through two-plated taxa such as Halkieria, to the eight-plated crown-group aculiferans. C. kroegeri therefore provides key evidence concerning the long debate about the crown molluscan affinities of sachitids. This new discovery strongly suggests that the possession of only a single calcareous shell plate and the presence of unmineralised sclerites are plesiomorphic (an ancestral trait) for the molluscan crown.

A new aglaspidid arthropod, Chlupacaris dubia gen. et sp. nov., is described from the Pusgillian (lower Ashgill, Upper Ordovician) Upper Tiouririne Formation near Erfoud, southeastern Morocco. Although disarticulated, careful documenting of the tergites allows a reconstruction of the exoskeleton to be made. Although somewhat trilobite-like in appearance, the lack of facial sutures, a well-defined axis with articulating half-rings and a pygidium clearly prove Chlupacaris gen. nov. is not a trilobite. An interesting feature is the presence of a hypostome in this non-trilobite arthropod. In contrast to other aglaspidids usually considered to be carnivorous, a filter-feeding mode of life is proposed for Chlupacaris gen. nov., based on the strongly vaulted cephalon, subvertical orientation of the hypostome and less strongly vaulted trunk. Chlupacaris gen. nov. is probably most closely related to the atypical aglaspidid Tremaglaspis unite from the Tremadoc (Lower Ordovician) of the U.K., but it can also be tentatively linked to the problematic Lower Cambrian arthropods Kodymirus vagans and Kockurus grandis from the Czech Republic. The relevance and validity of previous definitions and of possibly significant characters used for identifying aglaspidids are evaluated, and as a result, a new combination of characters diagnosing Aglaspidida is proposed. Contrary to previous reports, it is suggested that aglaspidids are probably more closely related to trilobites than they are to chelicerates. This notion may be supported by the shared possession of a mineralised cuticle, a possibly similar number of cephalic appendages, and the presence of a hypostome in some forms, although this last character may alternatively be homoplastic.

Retired high school science teacher Chris Laskowich picks through the rubble left behind from a previous day's blasting at an old basalt quarry that is now a condominium tract in northern New Jersey. He flips over small pieces of red shale and sandstone and examines the exposed sides of rocks too heavy to move. Within minutes, he sees the outline of something fascinating: a dinosaur footprint.

Exceptionally preserved fossils yield crucial information about the evolution of Life on Earth. The Fezouata Biota from the Lower Ordovician of Morocco is a Konservat-Lagerstätte of major importance, and it is today considered as an 'Ordovician Burgess Shale.' This biota was discovered only some 15 years ago, but geological studies of the area date back to the beginning of the 20th century. Pioneering geological investigations lead to the discovery of Ordovician strata in the Anti-Atlas (1929) and ultimately resulted in their formal subdivision into four main strat-igraphic units (1942). In the Agdz area, the presence of fossiliferous Tremadocian (Lower Ordovician) strata was suspected as early as 1939, but only definitively confirmed in 1955. In the 1960s–1990s, Jacques Destombes provided the first detailed biostratigraphic framework for the Lower Ordovician of the Anti-Atlas, and collected thousands of fossils that were subsequently described in a series of monographs. In the early 2000s, exceptionally preserved fossils were discovered in the Fezouata Shale (Tremadocian–late Floian) in the central Anti-Atlas by Mohamed 'Ou Saïd' Ben Moula. This biota, now known as the Fezouata Biota, is of utmost importance, for it demonstrates the extent in the fossil record of non-biomineralising animals typical of the 'Cambrian Explosion' into the Ordovician, during the 'Great Ordovician Biodiversification.' Although most components are still in need of formal descriptions, a fairly good picture of the composition and organisation of this biota, and how it contributes to our understanding of the early evolution of metazoan communities, can now be depicted. Moreover, recent studies have substantially clarified the biostratigraphical and palaeoenvironmental context of the Fezouata Shale, and are now being followed up by detailed investigations of the taphonomy, geochemistry and micropalaeontology of this unique Konservat-Lagerstätte. These efforts will soon greatly benefit from the recovery of fresh, unweathered samples from drill cores.

The Weeks Formation in Utah is the youngest (c. 499 Ma) and least studied Cambrian Lagerstätte of the western USA. It preserves a diverse, exceptionally preserved fauna that inhabited a relatively deep water environment at the offshore margin of a carbonate platform, resembling the setting of the underlying Wheeler and Marjum formations. However, the Weeks fauna differs significantly in composition from the other remarkable biotas of the Cambrian Series 3 of Utah, suggesting a significant Guzhangian faunal restructuring. This bioevent is regarded as the onset of a transitional episode in the history of life, separating the two primary diversifications of the Early Paleozoic. The Weeks fossils have been strongly affected by late diagenetic processes, but some specimens still preserve exquisite anatomical details. Course description: This course gives an introduction into the Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of Spain. Basic principles and methods of Paleontology and Paleoanthropology will be outlined. Especially presented will be the origins of life and human beings, evolution, and extinctions. The paleontological part will concentrate on some interesting Spanish case studies (reefs of the Devonian period, swamp forests of the Carboniferous period, shallow sea of the Jurassic period, dinosaurs from the Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous, and mammals and insects of the Tertiary period). In the center of the paleoanthropological part will be the famous findings of Homo antecessor and Homo heidelbergensis in the caves of Atapuerca and their importance for our knowledge about Human evolution.

Priručnik Škola krša dio je materijala osmišljenih i pripremljenih za potrebe provođenja stručno-edukativnih programa na temu zaštite krša. Preteča ovom izdanju priručnika je sličan edukativni materijal pripremljen u okviru projekta „Škola krša na Slunjčici“ i istoimenog naziva, realiziran u partnerstvu i temeljem suradnje sa speleološkim udrugama. Za razliku od tog prethodnog izdanja koje je usmjereno na jedno zaštićeno područje prirode, ovaj je novi materijal namijenjen edukaciji o kršu općenito, s naglaskom na njegovu izuzetnu ranjivost i postojeće mehanizme zaštite i očuvanja.
Priručnik sadrži 5 tematskih poglavlja s uključenim edukativnim sadržajima istoimenih radionica koje se mogu provoditi zasebno ili kao ujedinjeni poučni program Škole krša namijenjen poludnevnoj ili cjelodnevnoj terenskoj nastavi. Poglavlje „geologija krša“ odgovara radionici Stijene u kršu,  hidrogeologija krša obuhvaća materijale namijenjene radionici Vode u kršu, dok je poglavlje speleologija identično tematskoj cjelini radionice Špilje i šišmiši. Razvojem stručno-edukativnih programa Javne ustanove dodane su dvije nove radionice: Fosili-svjedoci vremena radionica je iz tematskog područja paleontologije s posebnim naglaskom na edukaciju o fosilima u kršu, dok je radionica Zaštita krša vezana za sve četiri prethodno navedene tematske cjeline, a naročito je usmjerena na mehanizme zaštite krša s ciljem alarmantnog utjecanja na razvoj svijesti prema njegovoj osjetljivoj prirodi.
Materijali su namijenjeni svim dobnim skupinama, što se postiže posebnim načinom prijeloma u kojem su tekstovi za više razine izdvojeni u posebno obojena polja, a na sličan su način prikazani i najbitniji sadržaji, s razlikom što sadrže i uskličnik u obojenim poljima. Poglavlja s uskličnikom, kao i tekstovi koji nisu posebno označeni, pisani su jednostavnim jezikom i namijenjeni prosječnoj razini znanja. Najmlađim skupinama koje će sudjelovati u stručno-edukativnim programima namijenjeno je mnoštvo fotografija i grafičkih priloga pa priručnik dijelom nalikuje slikovnici, a budući da takvi detalji često govore više od riječi trebali bi biti od pomoći svim čitateljima, odnosno korisnicima programa.

The Carboniferous eurypterid Eurypterus dumonti STAINIER, 1917 from Mechelen-aan-de-Maas (Maasmechelen), Belgium is redescribed and assigned to the genus Adelophthalmus. It is diagnosed as having a raised triangle of unknown function, dorsally on opisthosomal segment 7 and a carapace articulating laterally against the second opisthosomal segment. Earlier assignments of this species to the genus Unionopterus, based on the carapace shape figured in the original description (STAINIER 1917), are incorrect and the existence of a Carboniferous eurypterid with the characteristics described for Unionopterus must be questioned. The appendages in A. dumonti are completely exposed and provide an unrivalled insight into the number of appendage podomeres in the genus; this species is interpreted to have a podomere count consistent with most other eurypterids. Small pustules previously thought to be cuticle sculpture are here interpreted as diagenetic``dumb-bells'' (see BRIGGS & WILBY 1996) following microbial activity on the carcase prior to fossilisation. Thesè`dumb-bells'' are the oldest non-marine record of this diagenetic feature. A number of other features are also interpreted differently from the original description. Possible lineages within the Adelophthalmus clade are identified, A. dumonti is probably closely related to A. imhofi (Czech Republic) and A. moyseyi (United Kingdom).

The Geological Museum at the Krymskaya educational scientific base of
Saint-Petersburg State University (SPbU) located in Trudolyubovka village in South-Western Crimea exhibits over 1500 specimens of fossils, rocks, and minerals. During the field educational training on geological mapping in Crimea, in the museum students identify the samples they collect. This book tells, in brief, the history of the training and museum. The book has some pictures of the most important and interesting rocks, minerals, and fossils, some of those are commented on in detail.
The book is mainly purposed for SPbU educational field training in Crimea.
However, it can also be interesting for teaching staff and students of other higher educational institutions, specialists dealing with the geology ofCrimea and area studies, and tourists as well.

The Hubble parameter is a parameter that indicates increasing distances between galaxies in the universe. The space outside far away between galaxies is not different from the space nearby. So, the Hubble Parameter could be working in any space in the universe, not only between galaxies. But also, in space between planets and moons, in space inside atoms, and in space between elementary particles.
I will check this presupposition. I will calculate the values for an isotropic, expanding, and homogenous universe. This is a Friedmann–Lemaître–Robertson–Walker (FLRW) universe.  For such a universe the parameters for the observable part of the universe are all interdependent: Hubble Parameter, Age, Volume, Mass, Density, Radius, acceleration at the edge. If one value changes, all other values will change accordingly.
In this universe, many motions and celestial objects will be characterized by the value “pi” because π is involved in circles, Fibonacci spirals, spheres, orbitals, circumferences, volumes, and surfaces.

In this paper “A Fair Tale about Expansion”, I tried to catch the most important ideas from my book Con-fusing Gravitation. It is about my conviction that all matter is expanding. I am a firm supporter of Expansion Tectonics, a geological theory about Earth Expansion. This theory is dismissed by mainstream science for about 6o years. I know many objections against expansion. The scientific world is very huffy about the increase of mass and gets easily angry if they read about it again. I know most of these objections. Now I would like to read some supporting views, ideas, insights, convictions, complementary, similarly and encouraging. Really, I know the dismissing arguments. In the last two years I found an astonishing number of papers, books, videos about Expansion Tectonics, all dismissed. However, there is an increasing number of recent discoveries that plead for a review of all these dismissed papers, books, and videos. Mainstream cannot stop this tsunami.

Middle Triassic radiolarians were obtained from a bedded chert sequence in Chiang Dao, northern Thailand. Sixty-four species were identified into two assemblages, which indicate two stratigraphic levels including lower Illyrian (lowermost upper Anisian) and upper Illyrian (uppermost Anisian). The occurrence of upper Anisian radiolarians in our study indicates the former existence of a relatively deep marine environment in northern Thailand with a seaway between eastern and western Palaeotethys. The stratigraphic units containing bedded chert in this area were formerly dated on the basis of fossil evidence and petrological similarities. However, the strata in the study area are possibly not part of a continuous stratigraphic sequence, but consist of tectonic slices. The fossil age from any slice indicates only the geological age of the given slice, and adjacent slices are often of different ages. Parts of the sequence formerly mapped as Carboniferous and Permian are Middle Triassic in the study area. The sequence covers the Carboniferous to Middle Triassic and can be correlated with the eastern zone of the Changning-Menglian Belt in southwestern Yunnan, China.

proposed three similarly constructed fossil generic spore names with the first word base, Laevigat-, attached to the uniform ending-sporites giving the three generic names: Laevigata-sporites, Laevigati-sporites and Laevigato-sporites. The names were proposed as part of Ibrahim's original morphographic classification of fossil spores, in which the stem base (first element) of the generic name with different and varying endings (e.g.,-a- ,-es- ,-i-, or-o-) is attached to the uniform ending-sporites; the particular ending of the stem base, coming in the middle of the name, being an important key to the taxonomic position of the spore genus in his suprageneric artificial, morphographical groupings (Aletes [-a-], Monoletes [-o-] and Triletes [-i-and-es-], vide Ibrahim, l.c.: 15–16). ABSTRACT. The locality Zújar at the boundary between the Badajoz and Córdoba provinces belongs to the Obejo-Valsequillo-Puebla  de la Reina Domain. Within the fossiliferous reefal carbonates of Pragian age cropping out in Zújar, 10 stromatoporoid species and 7  rugose coral species are identified. The new rugose coral species Martinophyllum miriamae n. sp. is described. Hexagonaria soraufi  Rodríguez García, 1978 is a subspecies of Martinophyllum ornatum Jell & Pedder, 1969. The Pragian fauna of Zújar is a typical fauna of  the Old World Realm with remarkably close relationships to Arctic Canada and Australia. Most species have been recorded for the first  time from Spain. No significant relationships to the Eastern Americas Realm are visible. Remarkable is, that none of the stromatoporoid  species of Zújar is known from the famous Pragian reef complex of Koněprusy in Bohemia, meanwhile the rugose coral fauna (e. g.  Joachimastraea barrandei Galle, Hladil & May, 1999) shows some relations. Some of the species found are ancestors of important  constructors of the Middle Devonian reef complexes, demonstrating that the roots of the Givetian-Frasnian reef complexes reach down  to the Pragian.

Trace fossils are traces made in the sediment by ancient animals when they were alive, such as footprints and crawlways. Here we report on the recognition of sea turtle nesting structures in the Recent at St. Catherine's Island (GA), the 74 Ma BP Cretaceous Fox Hills Sandstone on the western shoreline of the Western Interior Seaway, and a newly recognized sea turtle rookery in the in 110 Ma BP late Albian limestone of the proto-Adriatic Sea at Pula, Istria, Croatia. In Croatia, the traces of nesting include 38 covering pits, several open body pits, two egg chambers, and one crawlway entrained in the Late Albian limestones of the Proto-Adriatic Sea. The sea turtle nests are associated with a contemporaneous trample bed made by dinosaurs, with turtle nests deposited on top of the trample bed and exhibit several dinosaur tracks made on top of the nests. The presence of covering pits proves that sea turtles were camouflaging their nests on beaches 110 Ma BP to protect them from depredation. This research is ongoing and will be illuminated by further research publication in the near future. It demonstrates the power of collaborative, international research done from different perspectives of the researchers.

Background. The origin of turtles, their earliest evolution and the homologies of the elements building their shell are still enigmatic and remain an object of ongoing discussion and research. Although the oldest fully shelled turtle – Proterochersis robusta from the Lower Stubensandstein (Norian) of Germany – was described more than a century ago, until recently it was mostly ignored by researchers. This is surprising, not only because of its notable stratigraphic position, but also due to the critical significance of this taxon in two competing hypotheses of turtle interrelationships. The divergence time of two main branches of Testudines crown group depends on whether Proterochersis is a basal pleurodire or a stem turtle.
Methods. A detailed study of the German material of Proterochersis and Murrhardtia was performed by the author and the available specimens were compared with still growing collection of proterochersid remains from the Norian location in Poręba (Poland).
Results. Two controversial taxa from Germany, Proterochersis intermedia and Murrhardtia staeschei are proved to be the synonyms of P. robusta. Establishment of another two proterochersid taxa is proposed and new primitive postcranial characters are recognized, supporting the stem position of Proterochersidae on the turtle phylogenetic tree.
Discussion. Two general hypotheses concerning the split time of Cryptodira and Pleurodira are functioning in the literature, and Proterochersis plays a crucial role in these considerations. According to traditional view, this taxon is the oldest side-necked turtle, based on the sutural connection between its pelvis and shell. Numerous recent analyses tended to allocate the Pleurodira much higher on the tree, resulting in stem position of Proterochersis, though such placement usually lacked a strong support. This was caused by an incompletness of Proterochersis material (only shells) and errors in interpretation of some characters. New data, gathered mostly from the Polish – much more complete and well preserved – specimens, supports the basal position of Proterochersidae and provides new insights in the ancestral structure of the turtle shell.
