Etruria and Ancient Italy

Tra i personaggi che animarono la vita intellettuale di Roma nella prima metà del secolo XIX, Donna Teresa Caetani, nata de' Rossi, rappresenta sicuramente un caso d'interesse sia per quanto riguarda le vicende dell'alta nobiltà romana, sia per l'archeologia, che proprio in quel periodo iniziava a muovere i suoi primi ed incerti passi verso una propria strutturazione come Altertumswissenschaft, come scienza dell'antichità. In questa sede si tenterà una ricostruzione del profilo biografico di questa nobildonna, dai tratti contraddittori e a volte "scomodi", soprattutto per la società del suo tempo, operando una sintesi tra i dati già editi e quelli inediti, questi ultimi raccolti in archivio, durante le ricerche riguardanti la sua attività di scavo nell'Etruria meridionale.

Populonia is the only Etruscan town on the sea. It occupies the hills of Poggio del Telegrafo
and Poggio del Castello, overlooking the Gulf of Baratti. The city benefits from a territory
rich of natural resources and with great potential. Nevertheless, because of its shape, required
unconventional choices in its organization and its management. Until at least the Late
Bronze Age, the exploitation of the important resources of coastal lagoons seems to follow
similar patterns of other middle Tyrrhenian districts. The Populonian coast was studded
with small settlements, located on the dunes or in the immediate proximity of the sea. In
the Early Iron Age, the above described way of occupation seems to change gradually, all
Bronze Age sites were abbandoned, apparently in contrast with southern Etruria. In the
Gulf of Baratti, the existence of the Villanovan necropolis on top of previous settlements,
seems to support this interpretation. It is possible to relate this phenomenon with the contemporary
concentration of the population in the area of the historical city, corresponding
to Poggio del Telegrafo and Poggio del Castello, as part of a larger commitment to planning
which also involved the gulf. Two different cemeteries have been identified at Baratti, the
first one was located at the center of the Gulf (San Cerbone and Casone-Porcareccia),
the second to the north-east (Poggio-Piano delle Granate). Furthermore, two small necropoleis
have been identified on the south-western slopes of Poggio del Telegrafo, and
the northern foothills in locality Buca (or Buche) delle Fate. The settlement of Poggio del
Telegrafo and Poggio del Castello, if not enclosed, is at least partially surrounded by the
necropolis. This choice of settlement allowed the inhabitans to combine the high defensive
potential of a coastal headland with wide visibility of the surrounding coast. The system of
occupation of the hinterland seems to be centralized, as in southern Etruria, on a tight selection
of the smaller settlements and focused on the maintenance of those needed to ensure
control of the territory. On the Island of Elba, we have evidence of thriving metallurgical
activities, still connected to the mixed sulphides, while the material culture, especially the
bronzework, confirms its proximity to Populonia. The Villanovan Populonia appears to be
the hub of a geographical district rich in important resources, with the mineralization of
Elba and Campiglia’s hills, and not only as a crucial junction of Tyrrhenian routes but also
of the main Mediterranean routes. Such a reconstruction fits well with the features of the
local society which emerges from the analysis of the funerary evidence. Infact, the birth of
the great Villanovan towns implies the overcoming of the previous fragmentation through
a process of integration that lead to a more complex structure of the social hierarchy. In
the case of Populonia, we have to imagine that this layering process was influenced by a
strong human mobility characteristic of a port of trade, the point of arrival or passage of
different peoples.

La rete stradale è il concreto tessuto connettivo della storia, ma finora gli studi sulla viabilità nel medioevo non hanno avuto grande sviluppo e si può ancora ripetere con Marc Bloch che "la storia stradale dell'Europa prima del secolo XVIII resta ancora quasi tutta da scrivere" 1 . In Italia, dopo l'impulso dato dalle idee suggestive di Johan Plesner 2 , è stato soprattutto Thomas Szabò a cercare di sostanziare di dati concreti la ricostruzione storica della viabilità medievale, in particolare in Toscana 3 . Ma sinora nello studiare la viabilità medievale ci si è dedicati soprattutto agli aspetti connessi con la storia, l'economia, le antichità e il diritto, mentre solo in studi su aree limitate si è scesi ad analizzare il concreto tracciato topografico, specialmente per il periodo di trapasso tra tardo antico ed alto medioevo, dato che questa esigenza di aderenza al terreno è stata sentita soprattutto da parte di topografi antichisti 4 . Di recente è stata affrontata una revisione delle problematiche relative allo studio della viabilità medievale, tracciando un quadro complessivo delle principali strade dell'Italia medievale 5 .

Il nostro corso sarà dedicato agli sviluppi fondamentali delle civiltà italiche e della civiltà romana, entro il quadro geografico costituito dai confini attuali dell'Italia, confini che, come vedremo, non coincidono sempre con il concetto che d'Italia ebbero gli antichi.

From the valley of Adige, the massif of Monte Baldo is first rising with steep walls, and only above them the characteristic eastern terrace of Monte Baldo stretches.

In those walls, on the altitude of 773 m, already from the year 1000 on, and certainly in the 12th century, there was a hermitage and in 1530 the first church was built there. In 1898 it was rebuilt, but the biggest reconstruction started in 1975.
The church was demolished and rebuilt to the dimensions, which can be seen nowadays. The church was consecrated in 1978 and in 1988 also the Pope visited the place.

Once the place was hardly reachable. Only a narrow and exposed passage was leading to the buildings.

The Sanctuarium and the Shrine of the Corona is a place of silence and meditation, extended between heaven and earth, hidden in the heart of the Baldo rocks. Medieval documents testify that hermits linked to the Abbey of St Zeno in Verona lived in the Baldo area already around the year 1000 and that at least from the second half of the 13th century there was a monastery with a chapel dedicated to St Mary of Montebaldo. This was only accessible by a dangerous narrow path in the rock. A holy tradition dates the birth of the Shrine of Our Lady of the Corona to 1522, the year when the sculpture venerated hen was miraculously transported through angelic intervention from the island of Rhodes, when the island was invaded by the Muslim army of Suliman II. This date is however contested by the existence, in the recesses of the modern shrine, of a fourteenth century painting of the Our Lady and the Child Jesus. This was the first image venerated in the original chapel, which took its name from it. Between 1434 and 1437 St Mary of Montebaldo passed under the ownership of the Knights of St John, or of the Holy Sepulchre, present in Verona since 1362 as the Commenda di San Vitale e Sepolcro, who remained owners of the Shrine until the dissolving under the Napoleonic provision of 1806. It would seem that the group in stone of the Pietà later venerated as Our Lady of the Corona dates to this period. The statue, that is 70 centimetres high, 56 wide and 25 in depth, is made from local stone and painted. It stands on a pedestal that bears the legend “HOC OPUS FECIT FIERI LODOVICUS D CASTROBARCO D 1432”, traditionally considered proof that the statue was made and given to the Corona in 1432 by Lodovico Castelbarco, of a noble family of Rovereto. During its four centuries of operation, the Commenda radically transformed Our Lady of the Corona, turning it into a real spacious and accessible Shrine thanks to the building of a wooden access bridge in the valley (1458) and the construction of a new church measuring 18 metres by 7 over the old chapel (1490-1521).
The sixteenth century saw the creation of two sets of access steps that can still be seen: a wider one, composed of 556 steps which from the spring of Spiazzi, later called “Spring of Independence” went down to the Bridge “del Tiglio”, and a narrower one, 234 steps, cut from the rock along the original very narrow path that went from the bridge to the church.

Scholarship has widely debated the question about the existence of an 'Italian identity' in the time of the Roman Republic, basing on the few sources available and on the outcomes of the Augustan and imperial age. In this sense, this debate has for a long time been conducted without sufficient imput from social sciences, and particularly from social geography, which has developed methodologies and models for the investigation of identities. This book starts therefore from the consideration that Italy came to be, by the end of the Republic, a region within the Roman imperium, and investigates the ways this happened and its consequences on the local populations and their identity structures. It shows that Italy gained a territorial and symbolic shape, and own institutions defining it as a territorial region, and that a regional identity developed as a consequence by the 2nd century BCE. The original, interdisciplinary approach to the matter allows a consistent revision of the ancient sources and sheds now light on the topic, providing important reflections for future studies on the subject.

Il 1897, l’anno del viaggio in Etruria, si rivela un "annus mirabilis" nell’evoluzione del pensiero di Freud, segnando un punto di svolta decisivo per la nascita della psicoanalisi.
La regione Orvieto-Bolsena, vissuta come il cuore dell’antica Etruria, rappresenta il punto estremo del suo cammino per giungere a Roma, oggetto di un desiderio a lungo frustrato, che nell’ Interpretazione dei sogni (1899) egli analizza in dettaglio e ricollega alla figura del condottiero cartaginese Annibale, il suo eroe preferito degli anni giovanili.

In occasione delle giornate in onore di Giovannangelo Camporeale (Massa Marittima, 23-24 settembre 2017), si è svolta una giornata di studi su Costruire il passato in Etruria. Il senso dell'archeologia nella società contemporanea, sui temi dell'archeologia pubblica.

In Val di Cornia, una ricerca archeologica che si interroga sulla sua utilità come scienza compiutamente sociale e che trova nella salda concatenazione tra scavo, valorizzazione e fruizione pubblica è alla base del progetto dei Parchi della Val di Cornia, nato negli anni '90.

Dal 1993 a oggi la Società Parchi, nata per creare e gestire i parchi, ha attratto notevoli investimenti che hanno ridisegnato in chiave culturale e turistica un territorio connotato economicamente e socialmente dalla monocultura industriale.

Lo testimoniano i dati del bilancio sociale che certifica che per 1 euro investito dalle amministrazioni nella società Parchi la ricchezza che essa produce sul territorio è pari a 10 euro.

Oggi la progettualità di parchi e musei è tesa al superamento delle barriere fisiche e culturali che separano i parchi e i musei dal proprio pubblico e alla definizione di nuove strategie per il coinvolgimento e la partecipazione.

Vanno in questa direzione il progetto sulla tomba dei Carri, per un contesto di fruizione emotivo grazie alla musica e alla lettura che ne amplia la portata informativa, le visite serali animate, per una fruizione empatica, allargata ed emozionale,  e gli open day gratuiti ai cantieri di valorizzazione in corso, tali da trasformare il parco da luogo dei divieti a luogo delle opportunità e della partecipazione.

Benché la Tomba François al suo interno sia piena di affreschi con raffigurazioni splendide di uomini e di gesta, difficilmente chi osserva non sarà attratto dal più esteso e dettagliato fregio animalistico dell'arte antica. Ritengo che sul fregio di Vulci, per il contesto in cui è rappresentato, per le scene che riporta e per le immagini in queste sembianze, vi sia molto su cui riflettere. Come detto, le presenze, le movenze, le caratteristiche di una tale raffigurazione sembravano molto più che peculiari, per una serie di motivi. Prima di tutto la grande varietà delle fiere rappresentate negli atteggiamenti, nella forma e nei colori ognuno peculiare a sé stesso. Inoltre se si osserva attentamente, come sottolineato da molti studiosi, le azioni e le scene di aggressione si trovano sempre sopra le porte. Si è parlato di rappresentazioni che rievocano la vita e la morte, ma per una tomba come quella François in cui per la prima ed ultima volta nella storia etrusca appaiano soggetti storici, mi sembra riduttivo riportare un grande fregio di questo tipo solo ad una questione evocativa di tipo trascendentale.

Le fr. 124 Wehrli d'Aristoxène sur la « barbarisation » des Poséidoniates et la fin des cultes grecs à Poséidonia renvoie à l'attraction politique et culturelle que Rome exerçait sur une partie des élites aristocratiques lucaniennes au cours de la seconde moitié du IV e siècle av. J.-C., particulièrement vers la fin du siècle. Ce processus culturel d'« auto-romanisation » fut favorisé par l'avancée des Romains en Campanie et en Italie du Sud et s'inscrivait dans la durée et le temps long, mais il se conclut brutalement en 273 av. J.-C. par la déduction de la colonie de Paestum et la fondation sur place d'une nouvelle cité. Les dieux de la cité grecque de Poséidonia étaient alors définitivement morts et avaient été remplacés par les dieux romains de la colonie de Paestum.

The " barbarisation " of Poseidonia and the end of Greek cults in Paestum.
Fr. 124 Wehrli of Aristoxenus, on the " barbarisation " of the Poseidonians and the end of Greek cults in Poseidonia, refers to the political and cultural attraction Rome held for a section of the Lucanian aristocratic elites during the second half of the 4 th century BC, particularly towards the end of the century. This cultural process of " self-Romanisation " was furthered by the Romans' advance into Campania and southern Italy and developed gradually over a long period of time; but it ended abruptly in 273 BC with the deduction of the colony of Paestum and the founding of a new city on the spot. The gods of the Greek city of Poseidonia were by then truly dead and had been replaced by the Roman gods of the colony of Paestum.

This course presents a broad survey of historical forces at work over the past 6,000 years, examining the manners in which human societies have organized themselves along categories of race, ethnicity, class, and gender to meet the challenges of the increasing human population and its demands on natural resources: thus, it examines continuity and change in societies over time, in different places, and among various peoples.

More than forty years after the publication of the Elogia Tarquinensia", a group of unique Latin inscriptions, discovered in fragments in the years 1937-1937 (but not recomposed) in the excavations of the colossal temple, built in the centre of the city of Tarquinia and traditionally called "Ara della Regina", Mario Torelli comes back to these exceptional texts, which revealed the genealogical sequence of three great generals of Tarquinia, belonging to the Spurinas/Spurinnae, the most illustrious local family of the 5th -4th century BCE, who accomplished ecceptional military deeds against Syracuse in 415 BCE and against Rome in 358-351 BCE. A new interpretation of the Fasti of the priestly college of the LX haruspices, that had in the same sanctuary its seat, and the recent discovery of a dedication of M. Tarquitius Priscus, haruspex of the emperor Tiberius and famous author of haruspical books, made possible to identify Tinia-Jupiter as the god of the temple and the sanctuary as the place for the celebration of the Tarquinian military triumphs, for many aspects similar to the Capitoline temple in Rome. These brilliant discoveries are concluded by a new, fascinating interpretation of the figural program of the Orco Tomb, which the Author suggests to have been the sepulchre of the Spurinas family.

A più di quarant' anni dalla pubblicazione degli Elogia Tarquinensia" con la ricostruzione dello straordinario complesso di testi epigrafici latini, scoperti in frammenti (e non riconosciuti) nel corso degli scavi condotti negli anni ' 30 nel grandioso tempio dell'"Ara della Regina" al centro della città etrusca di Tarquinia, Mario Torelli ritorna su quei testi che hanno rivelato la sequenza genealogica di tre grandi generali tarquiniesi, appartenenti alla nobile famiglia degli Spurinas/Spurinnae, autori di eccezionali imprese militari contro Siracusa a fianco degli Ateniesi nel 415 a.C. e contro Roma nel 358-351 a.C. La rilettura dei Fasti del collegio del LX haruspices, che aveva lì stesso sede, e la recente scoperta della dedica di M. Tarquitius Priscus aruspice dell' imperatore Tiberio e famoso scrittore di testi di aruspicina, hanno reso possibile di riconoscere in Tinia-Giove la divinità titolare del culto e nella sede dei trionfi militari tarquiniesi la funzione del santuario, per moltissimi aspetti simile al Capitolium di Roma. Roman colonization and expansionism in the Republican period, and its impact on ancient Italy, are intensely debated in current ancient historical and archaeological research. Traditional, diffusionist views from the late 19th and especially the 20th century have recently been heavily criticized, and many socio-economic and cultural developments in ancient Italy (e.g. ‘romanization’) have been disconnected from Roman conquest and expansionism. Although this development has been extremely important and salutary, in this paper it is argued that we should be careful not to throw away the baby with the bathwater. Very recent and ongoing research can be seen as pointing at real Roman impact in various spheres - if in different ways and places than traditionally assumed. Inverting the causal logic between new developments in ancient Italy and Roman colonization, it is argued that Roman expansionism actively targeted hotspots in socio-economic and cultural networks of special interest in ancient Italy. The privileged status of colonial communities then energized and redrew existing constellations, thus using, but also impacting on pre-existing configurations. Such a view stimulates us to rethink the primary incentives behind Roman colonization, and to investigate more intricate patterns of Roman agency.

A pochi mesi dalla conclusione della mostra "EROI ETRUSCHI E MITI GRECI gli affreschi della Tomba François tornano a Vulci", viene proposto un resoconto che possa aiutare coloro che vogliono approfondire e "rivedere" la tomba dagli occhi di chi ha visto lo splendore di quel monumento. La mostra è nata da una idea il Professor Bernard Andreae e della Soprintendente per i Beni Archeologici dell'Etruria Meridionale, Anna Maria Moretti, con il Bucerius Kunst Forum di Amburgo. La città tedesca è stata la prima ad ospitare la mostra: "Gli Etruschi. Lusso per l'Aldilà. Immagini della vita, immagini della morte" (12 Febbraio -16 Maggio 2004), nella quale i visitatori, hanno potuto ammirare l'intero ciclo pittorico dei dipinti della più celebre tra le tombe etrusche, la Tomba François di Vulci, accuratamente restaurato per la circostanza. Dalla Germania sarebbe dovuto giungere a Roma a Villa Poniatowsky, depandances di Villa Giulia del Polo Museale Etrusco. Ma, "per motivi contingenti", questo progetto non si è potuto realizzare. Come accade spesso le cose migliori nascono dalla necessità: era doveroso quindi restituire il ciclo pittorico al luogo di provenienza. L'esposizione nel Castello della Badia, sede del Museo Archeologico di Vulci (Canino, VT), si è protratta per quasi un anno ricollegando virtualmente le pitture al luogo del monumento di origine, la Tomba dei Saties, che era possibile visitare subito dopo, la visione degli affreschi. L'itinerario e la visita alla Tomba François o Tomba dei Saties erano così suddivisi: Castello della Badia 1a) Padiglione nel cortile -Affreschi: pannelli figurati, decorazione a meandri, fregio animalistico, 1b) Museo -Frammenti di stucchi intonaco recuperati nel 1930 dipinti decorativi, rilievo di Charun; 2) Luogo della Tomba -dromos, ingresso, tomba arcaica, tomba classica, camere di deposizione, stucchi; 3) Area della Città di Vulci. Nella mostra, la Tomba François era stata ricostruita tramite un supporto ligneo delle stesse misure e della stessa forma della camera sepolcrale, nelle pareti innalzate a grandezza originale sono stati inseriti i diciotto pannelli originali restaurati per l'occasione. Solo in questo modo i visitatori hanno potuto rivivere il momento della scoperta della tomba.

From first glance, it is clear that Etruscan uterus votives are reflective of an understanding of human female anatomy.  Beyond this, whether an understanding of the uterus as the place of fertilization existed has been debated.  This study examines Etruscan female anatomical votive offerings and their representation of the Etruscans’ understanding of female anatomy, asking what can be understood about social and cultural attitudes towards female sexuality and bodily autonomy, especially in relation to fertility and childbirth in Etruria.  These questions are addressed by contextualizing the state of medical knowledge in Hellenistic central Italy (and whom had access to it), looking at the broader Italic context of anatomical votive offerings, and looking closely at female anatomical votive deposits and providing a micro-analysis of form at three case study sites:  Punta della Vipera, Tessennano, and Esquiline.  I propose that most of these votives were deposited by women of all social strata, in an act of expressing concern and care for their own bodies and reproductive health.

The book is devoted to social-political organization of Etruscans in the 8th-3rd century BCE. Criteria of social groups' provision were mainly found in relation to land ownership. The composition of every strata of Etruscan society is determined, named and characterized, and the meaning of Etruscan city-state is solved. Establishment and development of king's power at the end of the 8th-3rd century BCE; terms denoting the royal title were explained. Transformation from monarchy to oligarchy was considered, there was given an interpretation of magistrate names in Etruscan polices in the 4th-3rd century BCE. In addition, the book explores development and activity of Etruscan Dodecapolis.

Early states, territories and settlements in protohistoric Central Italy is volume is the second of the series Corollaria Crustumina aimed at the publication of conference proceedings, doctoral theses and specialist studies concerning the Latin settlement of Crustumerium (Rome) and Italian protohistory. It contains multidisciplinary papers of an international group of archaeologists discussing new eldwork data and theories of broad relevance to Italian archaeology and with speciic relevance to the study of Crustumerium's settlement, cemeteries and material culture in light of the site's cultural identity.

""Etruscan is an Indo-European language, probably belonging to a sub-branch of Anatolian which does not include Hittite. This claim is based on the following evidence:
• only lexical items for which Etruscologists have proposed a gloss have been used in this research (no attempt has been made at proposing new glosses for currently obscure or highly controversial Etruscan terms);
• 138 of the glosses put forth by Etruscologists belong to basic lexicon, and 97% of such basic lexicon has an IE etymology;
• 19 grammar morphemes have also been assigned a value by Etruscologists: 95% of them have an IE etymology;
• all such etymologies are based on regular sound laws;
• a few notable innovations are shared by Etruscan and Anatolian languages (often excluding Hittite).""

Based on published data from excavations of the last 45 years, conducted in Campania, in Nola too, we should now resume the study of that part of necropolis in Nila excavated in the Ronga garden in the winter 1937/8 and published in 1969 under the title "La necropoli preromana di Nola" by M.Bonghi Jovino and R.Donceel. The knoledge we acquired during the last fifty years, thanks to the many new findings and studies, has helped us to enhance and deepen our understanding of the funerary rituals in Campania through VIIth and VIth centuries B.C. The present work shows how this has been done also for the Ronga Necropolis in Nola, by resolving some of the doubts and focusing on important details.

This article concerns the interpretation of Etruscan funerary art featuring banqueting imagery, namely tomb paintings and decorated sarcophagi, from the Archaic to the Hellenistic periods. There is no general consensus in scholarship about whether these scenes refer to banquets held in the realm of the living, such as those which might have occurred at funeral feasts, or whether they were intended to represent the afterlife existence of the deceased. This article first introduces the categories of Etruscan funerary art that will be considered, providing a descriptive overview. Then, the current scholarly arguments that banqueting imagery informs us about the realm of the living will be summarized, before providing the author's own interpretation, with the aim of concluding that funerary art primarily informs us about the realm of the dead.

Women’s role in textile production of Southern Italy during the Iron Age has been amply demonstrated by archaeological, iconographic and literary evidence. In fact, textile craft became a symbol of the female sphere of life. Women’s contribution to the community as textile workers was recognized by the deposition of spinning and weaving implements in their burials. Every region and even every community had its own rules for the type and number of implements chosen to be deposited with the dead. Aspects such as gender, status, age and specialisation were expressed by different types and combinations of textile tools included as burial goods. This paper examines general implications of these practices for our understanding of the social and economic role played by women in the Early Iron Age communities of Southern Italy.

Both "deposits"  of Goluzzo and Santa Marinella, although repeatedly cited in  chronological seriation's bibliography and in various bronze artifacts' typological studies, were only partially known and without a proper graphic rendering.
The complete study of all  these artifacts, including drawings and photographs, has led to the identification of some unfamiliar “objects' classes”, which, inter alia, allowed us to define a better articulation of the relationships' framework between the central Tyrrhenian Area and other cultural Areas.
A rilevant number of new elements for a better chronological  understanding of these  two complexes are also been acquired.

I due “ripostigli” di Goluzzo e di Santa Marinella, benché ripetutamente citati nella bibliografia specialistica relativa soprattutto alle seriazioni cronologiche e alle tipologie di varie classi di manufatti di bronzo, erano in realtà conosciuti soltanto in maniera parziale e senza un’adeguata resa grafica. Lo studio integrale di tutti i materiali pervenuti, corredato di disegni e immagini fotografiche, ha portato all’ individuazione di classi di oggetti poco noti - che hanno tra l'altro consentito di articolare meglio il quadro di relazioni esistenti tra l’area centrale tirrenica ed altre aree culturali nel corso del periodo preso in esame -  ed all’ acquisizione di una consistente serie di nuovi elementi utili per l’inquadramento cronologico dei due complessi.

Les deux “depôts de Goluzzo et de Santa Marinella,même si à plusieurs reprises cités dans la bibliographie spécialisée principalement dans les sériations chronologiques et dans la typologie des différentes classes d'objets en bronze, étaint en fait connus seulement en partie et surtout dépourvue d'une appropriée  restitution graphique. L'étude intégrale de tous les matériaux  conservés, accompagnée de dessins et de photographies, a conduit à l'identification de classes d'objets peu connues - ce qui a permis notamment de mieux articuler le cadre des relations entre l'Italie centrale  Tyrrhénienne et d'autres aires culturelles pendant la période examinée, et à l'acquisition d'un nombre important de nouveaux éléments utiles pour le cadre chronologique de ces deux complexes.
