The article presents the development of Planty Dietlowskie (named after the professor of Jagiellonian University, Józef Dietl) on the part of the old Vistula River that was reclaimed. Th e Vistula cut-off  formed a natural frontier between the city centre and the Kazimierz district, inhabited by Jews, which had earlier been an independent suburban Jewish town. In the eyes of hygienists and modernizers, the old Vistula presented a signifi cant problem: it was becoming less and less passable, and people on its two banks used it to dispose of waste and sewage. Th e fi lling up of this part of the old Vistula was at the top of the list of objectives postulated by the municipal government. Th e project was implemented with fi nancial support from the National Department, and squares were arranged. As a result, the Christian and Jewish quarters found themselves next to each other. Th e author questions whether this physical closeness had any impact on the social integration of Kraków’s inhabitants.

The Museum of Industry and Technology founded in Cracow in 1868 by Adrian Baraniecki was a unique cultural institution in 19th century Poland occupied by invading powers. Its founder, a physician and philanthropist from the Ukraine, forced to emigrate from the Russian sector of Poland due to his involvement in the January Uprising of 1963, decided to create a modern educational institution which would foster development of industry in Poland.

Public houses-inns, taverns, and alehouses-during the Jagiellonian Dynasty (1385-1572) in Cracow functioned as important establishments in the diplomatic services of kings, city officials, and the nobility. Not only did these locales offer drink, food, and accommodations to emissaries for their travels and work, but they provided much more. For the diplomats, the inns, taverns, and alehouses were sites to learn the latest news, gossip, and public opinion. They provided a place to fraternize and they were also trusted locations for sensitive diplomatic negotiations. Public houses likewise served as "post offices" where envoys could receive their letters. Although scholars have studied these establishments, the diplomacy, and urban history throughout Europe in various epochs , they have neglected to analyze the role of the Cracovian public houses in diplomatic services in the Jagiellonian era. This article provides a comprehensive examination of sources, including royal and municipal accounting and personal correspondence, to reveal the role of public houses in the diplomatic practices of the Jagiellonian dynasty.

Abstract: This article explores the development of urban and interurban identities in fin-de-siècle East Central Europe as alternative sources of identity that do not fit simply within standard national-historical narratives. The author focuses on Cracow as an example of this trend. Analyzing three popular illustrated newspapers from the city, he argues that thanks to popular press representations of the big city at home
and abroad, as well as the experience of urban life itself, Cracovians began to develop distinct urban and interurban identities. The mass circulation press was a major vehicle
in fostering and developing a shared sense of modern, urban identity among its readers.

The Cracow Version of Pseudo-Aristotelian De proprietatibus elementorum as an Academic Textbook

Among the works attributed to Aristotle in Middle Ages concerning the natural philosophy there is a treatise on geology called De proprietatibus elementorum. From the moment it was translated into Latin by Gerard of Cremona in the 12th century, it become an important source for medieval refection on the world. However, despite its relatively small size, in the late Middle Ages it could not avoid the fate of many other Aristotelian texts – it was sometimes shortened in order to adapt it to the academic use.

One of these shortened versions of De proprietatibus elementorum is now held in Kraków, Biblioteka Jagiellonska under the signature BJ 736 (ff. 230rb–323ra). Basing on prepared simple edition of this text, I will present its content, focusing mainly on the problems that its author paid close attention to. Furthermore, there will be some considerations about the text’s modified structure as well as its scientific and didactic purpose.

Przedstawienia portretowe w sztuce dawnej miały na celu wywarcie na widzu konkretnego wrażenia -nie zawsze ukazywały faktyczny wygląd fundatorów, ale to, jak chcieli być widziani. Zainteresowanie badaczy skupia rzecz jasna przede wszystkim zachowana do dziś, wielkich rozmiarów bazylika. Niniejszy artykuł poświęcony bę� dzie jednak wcześniejszej budowli, czyli hali powstałej ok. 1300 r. Jej żywot był krótki-od ukoń� czenia budowy korpusu do jego rozbiórki nie minęło zapewne nawet pół wieku; z pewnością nie dorównywała też klasą obecnie istniejącej świątyni. Z drugiej strony zachowany masyw wieżowy wciąż determinuje wygląd kościoła, a niektóre możliwe do odczytania rozwiązania formalne zdają się mieć istotne znaczenie dla przełomu, jaki dokonał się w krakowskiej architekturze w pierwszej ćwierci XIV wieku. Due to the development of chancery forms in the 19th and 20th centuries, the activi-ty of seal makers and engravers began to develop dynamically. The increased activity of Krakow’s seal makers and dealers is confirmed by, among others, press advertisements in which we can find a wide ranging offer of such enterprises. Technological development and ongoing economic and agricultural changes also had an impact on engraving firms. Mecha-nization became widespread, with rubber also being introduced into the production of seals, which enabled the faster delivery of more orders.In the discussed period, tens of seal makers and dealers operated in Krakow. The com-panies and craftsmen mentioned in the article do not constitute a whole, because there was no separate registration for them. Because of the lack of source material, it was difficult to find the dates on which some workshops were established or closed down. This also applies to the dates of company location and profile changes. We believe, however, that this previo-usly unexamined element of everyday life of Krakow’s residents should be presented and research into the unnoticed activities of local craft workers should be initiated.

Jednym z ważnych postulatów badawczych polskiej historii sztuki jest przekrojowe opracowanie portretów biskupów Kościoła katolickiego. Szczególne pole do takich badań stwarza Krakówmiasto zajmujące pośród wszystkich stolic diecezji w Polsce pozycję wyjątkowąl. Podstawowym zadaniem portretu jest utrwalenie wyglądu portretowanego. Funkcja ta jest tak oczywista, że nie ma Sensu szerzej jej rozważać. Dodać trzeba, iż obok obrazów oddających w sposób realistyczny rysy modeli, ist-niejąteŻ portrety imaginowane, najczęściej osobistości historycznych, których wizerunku nie utrwalono za Życia. Portret pełni wiele innych funkcji, m.in. reprezentacyjną, propagandową czy komemoracyjną. Przy rozułaŻaniuznaczeń, które można przypisać poszczególnym wizerunkom, trzeba brać pod uwagę różne przesłankiosobę fundatora, czas i miejsce powstania, przeznaczenie dzieła, sposób ujęcia portretowanego, jego ubiór i atrybuty, komentarz literacki i wiele innych. Ze wzg|ędu na mobilność większości portretów często trudno ustalić miejsce ich pierwotnej lokalizacji. Wielokrotnie spotykamy przypadki ich wtórnego wykorzystania w sposób odmienny od pierwotnie przewidzianego. Utrudnia to lub wręcz uniemożliwia właściwą interpretację danego dzieła. W rezydencjach biskupów krakowskich znajdowały się portrety ich aktualnych właścicieli. Najczęściej były to obrazy olejne na płótnie, oprawione w 1999 r. rozpoczęliśmy pracę nad inwentaryzacją i analizą portretów biskupów krakowskich' od średniowieczapoczynając, a na czasach najnowszych kończąc. Projekt wpisano do programu badań Instytutu Historii Sztuki UJ' został też wsparty finansowo przez Instytut Kultury Chrześcijańskiej im. Jana Pawła II w Rzymie. I Zważywszy na przekrojowy charakter tekstu, zmuszeni byliśmy ograniczyć aparat naukowy do najważniejszych, a przede wszystkim do najnowszych pozycji bibliograficznych. Dzięki temu, bez nadmiernego rozbudowania przypisów' czytelnik może łatwo dotrzeć do starszej literatury przedmiotu.

The Architecture of the Chapel of the Zbaraski princes at the Domenican church in Cracow.

The mausoleum of the Zbaraski princes at the Holy Trinity Church in Kraków features widely in Polish and foreign publications. However, no critical analysis of its formal structure has been carried out and the origin of the solutions used there has not been determined. Moreover, the designer of the building has not been named. Based on modest records and inscriptions from the tombstones of the Zbaraski princes, as well as the little known 17th-century drawing of the Holy Trinity Church, it is now possible to date the building. In 1628‒1632, construction works commissioned by Jerzy Zbaraski were carried out by the Kraków guild of stonemasons under the direction of Andrea and Antonio Castellos, who also made the stone decor and interior furnishings. Work on the drum and the dome with a lantern probably dragged on and continued after 1632. The formal and genetic analysis shows that the Zbaraski Chapel in Kraków belongs to the most ambitious architectural achievements of the first half of the 17th century in Poland. Its designer certainly knew the works of Giulio Romano, Francesco da Volterra, Martin Longhi and, most importantly, Ottaviano Mascarino and Carlo Maderno. Taking into account the foreign contacts and intellectual interests of the brothers Jerzy and Krzysztof Zbaraski, it cannot be ruled out that the chapel’s design was an import. However, structural and decorative solutions indicate that a designer operating in Poland could have been involved. The pair of triglyphs in the frieze of beams on the chapel’s facade show affinities with similar projects from the Vilnius Radziwiłł Palace and the Chapel of St. Casimir at the Vilnius Cathedral. The elliptical dome and the shells motif decorating the herm in the drum invoke themes known from the Vilnius church of St. Theresa. All three buildings are associated with Constante Tencalla, so this architect can be considered a probable designer of the Zbaraski Chapel.

A book on early Dominican architecture in Cracow, from the founding of the Holy Trinity convent (1222) to the 20s of the 14th century. Due to the large scale of archaeological and architectural research carried out in the Dominican church and friary in recent years, the book is in some parts out of date, but it still remains the basic monographic study of the problem.

The first English critical edition of the "Chronica Polonorum". The Chronica Polonorum by Bishop Vincentius of Cracow (c.1150–1223) was written in last decades of the twelfth century, a period when the throne of Poland was contested by rival members of the ruling Piast dynasty in a series of bloody civil wars. Vincentius was born in Poland c.1150 and probably studied in Italy and France, where he acquired his education and perfected his literary skill. After his return to Poland between 1183 and 1189, he became a canon of the cathedral of Cracow and a courtier close to Kazimierz II. Kazimierz had ruled as the princeps since 1177. After 1194 Vincentius became a provost in Sandomierz and chaplain to Kazimierz’s widow, Helena of Znojmo. Vincentius started work on the Chronicle in the late 1180s or the early 1190s at the behest of Kazimierz II. He had completed his text before 1208 when he was elected bishop of Cracow, one of the leading ecclesiastical offices in Piast Poland. During his pontificate he took part in the Fourth Lateran Council (1215) and was active in the implementation of the Gregorian Reform in his diocese. In 1218 Vincentius resigned his episcopacy to enter the Cistercian convent in Jędrzejów where he may have edited the final manuscript of the Chronicle. He died in 1223. The Chronicle provides an outline of the history of the Poles with particular emphasis on the events of the twelfth century which justified Kazimierz’s claim to the throne of Cracow and with it suzerainty of all Poland. Created against the background of the twelfth-century renaissance, it was written by a native Pole and demonstrates the erudition of the Polish elite and the recognition and appreciation of literary skill by the ruling dynasty. Vincentius offers a commentary on patterns of human behaviour, and his own view of morality through an elaborate use of philosophical and poetic digression and didactic admonition, sourced primarily from the works of philosophers, the poets of Antiquity and the Bible. Classical authors, including Ovid, Virgil and Horace, are quoted on some 150 occasions;  biblical texts appear in approximately 140 instances, with the most numerous quotations taken from the Old Testament, particularly the Books of Kings and the Book of Psalms.  This broad base of reference suggests that Vincentius directed his work towards a sophisticated, classically-educated readership that could understand and appreciate the complex plot, refined poetic form and many literary references..

The volume contains sixteen essays on aspects of the development of commercial, ecclesiastical, noble and military elites in the Romanian Principalities, Poland-Lithuania, the Ionian Islands and the Ottoman Balkans.
