Campus Planning and Design

This participatory photography study was conducted at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota in fall of 2001 as a grounding for future campus planning and design. Over thirty students and faculty took photographs of places, people, and events in the college campus that they valued or felt expressed Carleton's distinctive "sense of place" or culture. Photos and accompanying written descriptions show general consensus in the key roles of natural landscapes, friendships, and learning in place attachment.

The first campus of the University of the Philippines, which was founded in 1908, was located in Ermita, Manila. Three decades later, its location in the rapidly urbanizing and politically volatile capital led university and government officials to move the university to Diliman in suburban Quezon City, a site that embodied the university town archetype. While the new campus conformed to the university town template, Quezon City’s income-poor communities proved significant in radicalizing students, thereby undermining the original intention behind Diliman. Attention to the peculiar historical geography of the main campus of the University of the Philippines has potential to serve as the start of a conversation on the socio-spatial relations between universities and Southeast Asian cities.

These authors identify transforming trends in society that are affecting the mission of universities, analyze the impact of those trends on the institutional and spatial structure of universities, and then summarize the factors that planners should be paying attention to in the future design of their institutions.

Keywords Abstract Suburban university campus; outdoor space; behavioral mapping; apace syntax analysis. This study investigates the patterns of occupation of outdoor spaces on a suburban university campus and seeks to understand the factors that affect them. The comprehensive methodology applied in this research attempted to overcome some of the shortcomings of related studies by conducting a longitudinal study (behavioral mapping during a year, as opposed to a few days) and by objectively analyzing the associations of user behavior and physical attributes, and the configurational properties of the campus layout. The results show that campus users fail to capitalize on the potential offered by the spatial configuration of outdoor spaces because they are not supported by amenities for pedestrians such as seating, shading elements and catering facilities. Supporting campus outdoor spaces that have the configurational potential of bringing various types of users (students and staff) with amenities for pedestrians and service facilities would create a lively and sustainable campus for its users.

During the past few decades, several approaches have been developed by campus designers in order to address the core functions and mission of the campus landscape, and to enhance the overall collegiate experience for students. While providing effective strategies for designing functional, aesthetically-pleasing campus landscapes, these approaches often fail to recognize students’ core needs and values relative to how they use these designed spaces. A theoretical framework based on these needs and values is required to successfully implement one of these design approaches within the campus landscape, a framework within which these approaches may be appropriately applied. This study posits a powerful mission for the campus landscape—that it should be designed to present students with unplanned opportunities for collision (or interaction), encourage a sense of community among the student body, and prepare students for citizenship within society. Furthermore, this study identifies the major agents involved in the production and consumption of campus landscape, determines the needs and values of students as consumers within this process, and proposes a theoretical framework that allows campus designers to better understand and accommodate these needs and values within the campus landscape. In order to accomplish these goals, a majority of this study’s findings come from the results of an undergraduate student questionnaire designed to identify contemporary students’ needs and values regarding the campus landscape. These results are juxtaposed with the selected body of research—particularly the three-part mission—to offer a rationale for the required theoretical framework to guide the design of college campus landscapes. This framework is composed of seven needs and six values that were identified and determined from the summary of responses to the student questionnaire, and corresponded in part to some of the existing literature on designing campus landscapes with deeper meaning and purpose for students. These needs and values—in conjunction with the accepted literature—will guide the campus designer as to why and how the campus landscape might be designed to enable students to compose meaningful and memorable collegiate experiences.

In 1925, Vassar College, then one of America’s preeminent women’s colleges, hired Beatrix Jones Farrand, the foremost woman landscape architect in the United States, as Consulting Landscape Architect. Farrand was already celebrated for her institutional landscape designs at Yale and Princeton—unusual for a woman at the time—but Vassar would be her one opportunity to work at a women’s college. Her campus commissions are a highly significant and relatively little studied aspect of her oeuvre, and her work at Vassar is virtually unknown. Drawing on a wealth of previously unpublished archival material, this article presents a fine-grained portrait of her ideas and working methods for the Vassar campus. Although her tenure there would be short-lived, her ideas changed the college in important ways: her plantings plans were partially realized, leaving surviving traces down to the present, and she was instrumental in initiating an arboretum, proposing the conception of the entire campus as arboretum – a notion that became central to Vassar’s identity. Moreover, Farrand worked at Vassar during a period of profound social and cultural upheaval over women’s roles, to which the college was responding with curricular initiatives engaging environmental and landscape issues, initiating progressive programs in native plant ecology and landscape architecture that would reform women’s educational and career prospects. This essay analyzes Farrand’s Vassar projects at a heady time for women and landscape on the Vassar campus, considering these socio-cultural and educational contexts, as well as presenting a chronicle and a formal analysis of her designs.

"In 1957, Canadian media theorist and University of Toronto English professor Marshall McLuhan predicted mass media would radically transform learning environments, having already 'cracked the very walls of the classroom.'  In a related 1967 article on the future of education, McLuhan foresaw 'free-roving students' interacting within media-rich settings, reveling in the realization that “our place of learning is the world itself, the entire planet we live on.'  However prescient of twenty-first-century global connectivity, McLuhan’s prediction of 'classrooms without walls' did not come to fruition. At their best, university settings are productive laboratories of peace and democracy, providing dignified and inspiring places to freely exercise the individual and collective capabilities of imagination, experimentation, interpretation, and dissent. More concretely, campuses are living paradigms for cities, exemplifying our best urban ecologies by planning for dense cultural diversity; by integrating mixed-use development with thriving natural landscapes; by responsibly adapting buildings that have accrued over time; by implementing sustainable technologies; and by creating transit-accessible and pedestrian-friendly environments conducive to lingering, meandering, and face-to-face contact.  Because of all this, universities are, as Michael Sorkin asserts, 'the closest we come to quotidian utopia.'  This chapter centers on four exemplary campus designs of the 1960s that have remained influential touchstones throughout the decades to follow: Ron Thom’s Massey College (1960–1963) and Trent University (1963–1969); John Andrew’s Scarborough College (1963–1965); and Arthur Erickson and Geoffrey Massey’s Simon Fraser University (1963–1965). These projects catapulted Canadian campus architecture onto the international stage."

A study was initiated for the course work of Landscape Urbanism curated by Professor Kelly Shannon for which each participant were asked to analyze one indigenous and one designed case from their home country based on a detailed reading of Landscape Urbanism Reader. This assembles a dilapidated 300 years old settlement called "The Panam Nagar" and a 50 years old Residential University Master plan done by famous Bangali Modernist Architect  Muzharul Islam. The paper aims at manifesting logic of urbanism and landscape for this two cases and tries to relate them based on a literary arguments and imagery discussion.

The open area of the university campus is a potential social activity area where students and staff spend a significant portion of their time. It is also an open laboratory for landscape architecture students. In this study, the importance of the use of design plants in the university campus was put for ward and the Terzioğlu Campus of Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University was examined. The study was carried out within the open green area between Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Rectorate Building, Atatürk Statue, ÖSEM, Library and Yamaç Café. Because this area is the most important meeting point and usage rate is very high. The main purpose of this study is to ensure that all students, staff and visitors whouse this region in their spare time are interested in and learn about plants. In addition, it is aimed to create data so that the area can become a living plant museum in the future. This research assesses the performance of Qatar University campus public spaces from the users' perspective after it has been used and occupied for over 15 years. The assessment aims at understanding the mutual interaction process between the built environment exemplified by campus public spaces and the needs of the university community exemplified by students, faculty, and staff. Therefore, this research argues for the value of evaluating current campus public spaces from the users' perspective. It aims at defining problematic areas related to the utilization of current public spaces in order to develop a framework for possible future improvements. The methodology adopted to achieve the project objectives is multi-layered in nature and incorporates a wide variety of assessment techniques, including walk-through evaluation, observation, behavioral mapping, and questionnaires.  The investigation reveals a number of problems that may hinder the performance of different types of QU campus users. By recognizing how well the campus outdoor spaces respond to the needs of faculty, students, and staff, one can recommend ways of improving the built environment necessary to facilitate the work and learning experiences of different users within the campus and the desired student/faculty interaction.

The expansion of the Temple University and Drexel University campuses in Philadelphia after World War II revealed a shift in the perception of the appropriate form for an urban campus and signified a change in the relationship between the institution and the host neighborhood. This project first provides the context for campus design in the United States and then relates a brief political and economic history of the City of Philadelphia after World War II. The narratives for each campus were constructed from materials found in institutional archives and special collections, historic maps, Sanborn maps, city planning documents, contemporary periodical and newspaper articles, as well as analysis of the photographs, plans, and the structures associated with these sites. At the heart of the early states of each campus transformation was a dedicated architectural firm and a progressive administration whose relationships with the City Planning Commission and the Redevelopment Authority would help shape the appearance and direction of campus development.

O tema desta dissertação é o território ocupado pelas universidades, com um recorte mais preciso: aqueles situados no meio rural e, mais especificamente, o caso do Campus Fernando Costa da Universidade de São Paulo, em Pirassununga/SP. Os objetivos são: estudar os problemas de planejamento desses territórios, tendo como foco os espaços em ambiente rural; estudar o percurso histórico-institucional desses territórios; e estudar suas relações com a cidade. O texto se inicia com uma revisão bibliográfica e uma contextualização da história das universidades. Se apresentam o percurso histórico do território, seu planejamento inicial, as transformações ao longo do tempo e a situação atual. Foram realizads análises físico-territoriais e documentais complementares à análise histórica, incluindo estudos comparativos com outros territórios universitários situados no meio rural. Concluímos com a apresentação de algumas dificuldades e perspectivas, direcionadas ao caso específico e alguns elementos que possam ser generalizados.

This project seeks to design Outdoor Learning Spaces utilizing the interconnected courtyard spaces of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria Campus. This is to give a convivial alternative to the traditional indoor classrooms especially in the tropics. The study further explores the immense types of Outdoor Pedagogy we have and their overarching benefits to students and lecturers. Also, the viability and acceptability as well as concerns of people about this project is measured and information gathered from these sources has been meticulously documented.
Chapter four defines the boundary of the project by stating in specific terms the project brief, putting into cognisance the analysis of the location, physical and regional settings, climatic characteristics, soil and vegetation etc. The design brief is to design an Outdoor learning space using the interstitial spaces in Ahmadu bello University Zaria as pilot project for universities in the tropics. In summary, this design proposal attempts to give a more convenient alternative to the usual traditional classrooms we are used to, even as unfavourable as it is to our climate.

This paper focuses on the urban condition of university precincts, aiming at exploring their vitality potential, i.e. the capacity to generate urban activities and transactions. The role and contribution of the urban morphology is explored, based on a comparative analysis between two realities: Curitiba, Brazil and Lisbon, Portugal through two case studies: Universidade Federal do Paraná, in Brazil and Cidade Universitária de Lisboa, in Portugal. The two cities present similarities in features such as dimension of the region area, and campus relevance. The analysis is developed based on a morphological description, obtained through the methodological use of space syntax tools, and complemented by in loco observations. It attempts to quantify measures such as integration and visibility, crossing this information with the direct observation. The final aim of this paper is to explore the impact of the campus morphological features on the ability to generate urban vitality.

Soon after its establishment, the interpretation of the building design of Tunghai University has been replete with intertwined narratives of modernity and Chinese nationalism, as either in the style of Tang dynasty architecture or a successful " modernization " of Chinese architecture. With close examination of primary documents, this essay attempts to open up the framework of interpretation that has hitherto been neglected, particularly the ways the postcolonial perspective on imperialism and missionary applied to Tunghai University. The Bauhaus paradigm has long ignored the colonial and postcolonial penetration of the Modern Movement into the developmental worlds as well as its political and symbolic adoption. The analysis shows that William Fenn, the executive director of the United Board for Christian Higher Education, has dealt with the ruptured and conflicted society of the island at the beginning of the Korean War in 1953 through his search for a regional expression of the locality of Taiwan in the architecture of Tunghai. These intentions prompted the architects of the schoolmainly I. M. Pei, Chang Chao-Kang, and Chen Chi-Kwangto cite architectural expressions across the world and infused multi-facet messages in their campus planning and architectural design. On the one hand, it is an expression of regional architecture, composed by architects who are sensitive to the grammar of architectural composition; it also, however, acts as a cultural embassy of America and thus a justification of American imperialism hidden behind its modernist sensitivity.

ÖZET Teknolojik ve ekonomik koşulların gelişimi, buna paralel olarak yaşam düzeyinin yükselmesi, yüksek öğretime artan ilgi; büyük eğitim kompleksleri olan yerleşkelerin ortaya çıkmasına ve gelişmesine ortam hazırlamıştır. Genellikle kent merkezleri dışında, doğal ekosisteme yakın, geniş alanlara sahip olan bu yerleşkeler, bulundukları çevrenin ekolojik koşullarından etkilenmekte veya bu ekolojik koşulları etkilemektedir. Bu etkileşim sürecinde doğal ve kültürel kaynaklar üzerinde baskılar oluşabilmekte, yakın çevre ölçeğinde hatta yöresel ekolojik değişiklikler ortaya çıkabilmektedir. Physical inactivity and the diseases such as obesity are the results of increasing environmental pollution caused by developing technology, are shown as the main problems reducing the quality of life today. Succeed in the studies con-ducted on the topic of active transportation is directly related to the mentioned problems, which is very important in terms of reducing the negative effects. Although different methods are used in the relevant literature, a significant number of parameters are commonly evaluated in many studies. It is seen that these parameters are used in different study areas and there are inconsistencies between the results. Some control studies are needed to reveal the factors that cause inconsistent results. At this point, instead of using a standard set of pa-rameters in various study areas, it would be useful to create a new set of specif-ic parameters based on the characteristics of the related study area. This study aims to determine the spatial parameters affecting walking comfort in a specif-ic study area (Selcuk University) together with the significance levels and to develop a new approach that can be adapted to different study areas based on this example area. In the study, both objective and subjective measurement methods were used to evaluate the potential inconsistency between the ob-tained results. In 17 of 30 parameters evaluated within the scope of the study, the coefficient determined by the users was higher than that of the experts. Based on the data that more than half of the parameters according to users are more important than those indicated by the experts, it was concluded that the standards and criteria were not fully accepted by the users.

In this study, the researchers apply a phenomenological framework of
place attachment to investigate the extent to which student life centers
may become effective gathering places on university campuses and
how specific spatial characteristics may influence students’ senses of
belonging, community identification, and perception of the university
as an extension of the broader experience economy. Results indicate
that a combination of two major factors may contribute to and facilitate
the formation of place attachment: (1) spatial-design characteristics
(proximity to the main entrance, location of functional areas, ease
of navigation, openness and visual accessibility, functional pliancy
of spaces, flexibility and adjustability of furniture and other interior
elements, exterior views, and visual aesthetics and perceived sophistication); and (2) social ingredients (higher user density, richness of space programming, and direct student involvement and autonomy in
running the facility).

The built environment implicitly regulates bodily movement, whether through decorative curbs marking areas as private or lighting accentuating pimples to drive youths away. Drawing on my own observational research and empirical studies, I argue tacit boundaries such as these are harsher for people under the weather in the threefold sense of suffering from inclement conditions, ill-health and oppressive social climates. Inasmuch as design filters people in these ways, space is “selectively permeable.” I pursue these lines through Shusterman’s somaesthetics and Gibson’s affordance theory. A tenet in somaesthetics is that culture, mind, body and values are codependent. Gibson’s framework likewise holds that body, values and environment are codefined. An icy stairway, for example, may afford falling to the infirmed and look threatening to them more than it does to the healthy, who therefore value it differently. The same pattern occurs in cultural-political environments: a woman may see an urban setting as more threatening than a man because it places her at greater bodily risk, just as citizens in an authoritarian society may face more danger than tourists, experiencing things accordingly. That agents face objectively different obstacles in the same environment allows for selectively permeable design and it makes affordances political.

An account of the philosophical and aesthetic choices behind the designs of three British university campuses of the early 1960s: Sussex, UEA and York, drawing on the archives of Denys Lasdun (UEA), published articles of Basil Spence (Sussex) and unstudied recordings of Sir Andrew Derbyshire (York). I trace these architects' design choices to a pedagogical idealism deriving ultimately from mediaeval theology via the mediation of Cardinal Newman and his readers in postwar Britain.

In this ethnographic account, I attempt to write an anthropological narrative of my own
university located in a district town of the West Bengal state in India about 130
kilometres from Kolkata, the capital of the state. My account does not come under the
sub-discipline of ‘Educational Anthropology’ in which formal education is studied by
the anthropologists as yet another process of the transmission of culture. My point of
departure entails viewing the physical and the cultural space named ‘university campus’
by situating the case study of Vidyasagar University in a theoretical and global context.
The anthropological subjects in the cultural space labelled as ‘campus’ range from the
Vice-Chancellors to the indigenous tribal people who were viewed as ‘encroachers’ by
the university community, while the latter looked at the campus as part of their
traditional village common land. Ironically, the aims and objectives of my university
was to build up research and teaching towards the development of the tribal and the
underprivileged people of the region in which the university is located. The case of my
university and comparative cases of Columbia, Pennsylvania and Marquette
Universities definitely differ in scale, but they also share one common point: expansion
of a campus and its effect on the local community in the context of the ideals and
objectives of university as a social institution. The empirical scenario demands the
emergence of the new sub-discipline named ‘campus anthropology’.

This article examines the urban-planning design and elaboration of the Delft and Eindhoven University of Technology complexes. What were the underlying ideas, views and designs for the two complexes, how and to what extent were they put into practice, and how have the complexes developed over time? How did, and does, the surrounding urban landscape influence the form of the campus, and how is the campus linked to the city? This comparative analysis focuses on the campus as an interplay of buildings and open space, emphasising the character of the spatial whole and the changes that have taken place within it.

There have long been unsubstantiated reports that Frederick Law Olmsted, widely known as the father of American landscape architecture, designed Vassar's bucolic campus, although the source of Vassar's early designs remains unclear. Drawing on new archival research and a wealth of unpublished drawings, documents, and photos, this exhibition clarifies the Olmsted firm's contributions to the college, from the visit of F. L. Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in 1868, through the fundamental recommendations of John Charles Olmsted in 1896 for the college's expansion beyond Main Building, to the designs of Olmsted partner Percival Gallagher c. 1930. This exhibition—together with a recently published article—mark the bicentennial of F. L. Olmsted's birth on April 26, 2022.

Universities have crucial importance in producing and transmitting knowledge, and formulating an effective and critical public sphere that meets the public with the university population. Their spatial characteristics of universities also refer to an important position within the urban fabric: with dense students' and academi-cians' population, they occupy a considerable amount of spaces in cities. Their spatial formations change over time as new buildings are added and student numbers increased. In that respect, this article seeks to explore how the spatial configurations of university campuses have evolved over time in Turkey. In order to explore the changes in spatial layout of university campuses, especially the organization of public spaces and their relations with the campus buildings, we have narrowed our focus through a chronological reading. Two methods of collecting data are used: First, we reviewed design articles about university campuses in architectural periodicals and online architecture databases. Second, the Five Year Development Plans of Turkish State Planning Organization (DPT 5 Yıllık Planları), have been examined to follow the governmental considerations. In addition, we made interviews with some of the architects who took part in the campus planning process of the cases that are selected for this article. In conclusion, analysis of the spatial configuration of campuses in Turkey reveals some unexpected insights about particular design approaches of universities. The analysis of specific campuses in chronological order shows that it is possible to trace specific campus design tendencies that are peculiar to specific periods.

The study method is based on territory research, examinations, analyzes and literatüre research. As a result of the study, woody plants in the area were identified at the family, genus and specieas. Suggestions were made for the area to become 'live plant museum: Arboretum'.

When students enter into the college and university setting, they become part of a community. As they continue throughout their academic careers, students develop relationships with various stakeholders and undergo personal situations, which can either facilitate or hinder their level of engagement and involvement with the academic communities they are a part of. The university setting provides a platform where there are multiple stakeholders in a large, complex system, which inevitably, may also come with many conflicts. The literature shows that student engagement and involvement on campus has been linked to perceived positive experiences and feeling of connectedness to their alma mater, as well as the increased likelihood that alumni will be active with their campuses. This quantitative methods dissertation consolidates the fields of conflict analysis and resolution with the study of student affairs to prove that there are certain variables that significantly prevent and significantly facilitate student engagement and involvement levels on campus. The study was built on a theoretical platform developed, titled the Hypothetical Algebraic Formula for Student Engagement (HAFSE) and used multiple regression, stepwise regression and observance of bivariate scatterplots and trend lines to discover that feeling of connectedness to student service’s staff, the student body and academic advisors; number of hours dedicated to studies, number of children, and number of hours worked, of all variables observed, have the most influence on student engagement and involvement. These 6 variables held true, across all academic levels, in a national sample of 309 students enrolled in institutions across 46 states in the US. The findings of this study can help both theorists and practitioners of conflict analysis and resolution and in the field of student affairs to identify the complex needs and wants of students of the 21st century, for the purposes of enhancing students’ experiences in the campus setting.

It has become standard practice to use the traditional information technologies such as web and email in education. But as the University campus becomes increasingly deployed with interconnected computing technology, we begin to ask how the resulting “iCampus” resource can be used in new and novel ways. This paper builds upon our previous work in the area of intelligent environments and goes beyond the typical use of computing technology within education. We report on our current research that aims to apply mixed reality and ubiquitous computing paradigms to enrich the teaching and learning experience and describe our deployments and innovations across the University of Essex campus.

Öz: Amaç: Bu çalışma üniversite kampüslerinde, peyzaj değerleri ve yer duygusu kavramlarının öneminin ve arala-rındaki ilişkinin ortaya konması amacı ile ele alınmıştır. Bu genel kapsam içerisinde çalışmada; yer duygusu ve peyzaj de-ğerlerine etki eden (a) cinsiyet ve ders dışında geçirilen zaman değişkenlerinin farklılıklarını araştırmak, (b) peyzaj değerleri ve yer duygusu ilişkilerini psikometrik olarak belirlemek amaçlanmıştır. Yöntem: Veri toplama araçları olarak Peyzaj Değerleri Ölçeği (Akgül Yalçın, 2012) ve Yer Duygusu Öl-çeği (Jorgensen ve Stedman, 2001) kullanılmıştır. Çalışmaya Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal Üniversitesi (BAİBÜ) kampüsünde okuyan toplam 450 öğrenci katılmıştır. Çalışmada betimsel istatistik, ilişkisel korelasyon, bağımsız T testi ve tek yönlü varyans analizi (ANOVA-gruplar arasındaki anlamlı farkı saptamak için Tukey Post-Hoc) uygulanmıştır. Bulgular: Ça-lışma sonuçlarında; cinsiyet ve ders dışında kampüste geçiri-len zaman alt değişkenlerinin peyzaj değerleri ve yer duygusu puanlarında BAİBÜ kampüs örnekleminde istatistiksel olarak anlamlı farklılıklar ortaya koydukları saptanmıştır (p<0,05). Peyzaj değerleri ve yer duygusu alt boyutları irdelendiğinde korelasyon analizlerinde, peyzaj değerleri alt boyutlarından manevi değer, mimari değer, rekreasyonel değer, doğallık değeri, bilgilendirme değeri, donatı yeterlilik değeri ile yer duygusu alt boyutları arasında (yer kimliği, yer bağlılığı ve yer bağımlılığı) pozitif yönde anlamlı ilişkiler saptanmıştır. Sonuç: Bir başka deyişle, öğrencilerin peyzaj değerleri alt bo-yutlarına verdikleri puanlar arttıkça yer duygusuna verdikleri puanlar da artmaktadır. Çalışmada bütün bu sonuçlar derinle-mesine açıklanmış ve tartışılmıştır. Abstract: Aim: This study has been discussed in order to better understand the importance of landscape values and sense of place in university campuses and to reveal the relationship between them. In this general scope, the aim of this study is to investigate the differences of (a) gender and time variables that affect the sense of place and landscape values, and (b) to determine the relationship between landscape values and sense of place psychologically. Method: Landscape Values Scale (Akgül-Yalçın, 2012) and Sense of place Scale (Jorgensen and Stedman, 2001) were used as data collection tools. A total of 450 students from BAIBU campus participated in the study. Descriptive statistics, relational correlation , independent T test an done-way analysis of variance (ANOVA-Tukey Post-Hoc was used fort he significant difference between groups) were used in the study. Findings: According to the results of the study, it was found that there were statistically significant differences in the BAIBU campus sample in terms of gender, landscape values and sense of place scores of time sub-variables spent on campus (p <0.05). When landscape values and sense of place sub-dimensions are examined, correlation analysis, spiritual value, architectural value, recreation value, naturalness value, information value, outdoor furniture qualification value and sense of place sub-dimensions (place identity, place attachment, place dependence). Conclusion: In other words, as the scores given to the sub-dimensions of landscape values increase, the scores they give to the sense of place increase. All these results are explained and discussed in depth.

University campuses are the areas with high utilization potential where both the staff and the students spend most of their times with educational or social activities. The transportation network is one of the most important elements that define the character and the usability level of a campus. Ege University has been established on an area of 3450 decare in 1955 and has a dispersed settlement model. Within this study, the transportation network of Ege University campus has been investigated according to functional and visual characteristics of the campus and suggestions have been offered to increase the standards of vehicle and pedestrian transportation. This study has been completed in three steps; the elements of the transportation network have been divided in to groups depending on their functions and the first evaluation has been done on the base of environmental, visual and functional characteristics at the first step. At the second step, the sub-criteria that characterize the network have been defined according to the intensity of utilization and user behaviours, and the most intense network elements have been investigated depending of those sub-criteria. At the third and last step of the study, regarding the data gathered during the study, suggestions have been offered to facilitate both vehicle and pedestrian utilization and to increase the visual quality of the network.
