Asian EFL Journal, 2018
This paper examines the meaning of three Indonesian emotion words, bahagia, senang, and gembira that come from happiness discourse. “Happiness” has become an important aspect in nation’s well-being as well as the people’s health and longevity. The problem arises when these three ‘happiness’ words are used interchangeably without any clear cut in meaning. The Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) approach was applied in this study due to its universality and capacity to solve the definition circularity. The data were taken from the Leipzig University Indonesian corpora. Additionally, some definitions from Indonesian monolingual as well as English-Indonesian and Indonesian-English bilingual dictionaries were taken into consideration to illustrate the problems. As the result, this paper defines bahagia, senang, and gembira as personal emotions from the discourse of “happiness” that occurs in different duration of time. The difference occurs also in the ‘otherness’ characteristics of each emotion. The native Indonesian experience on these emotions was described in the NSM explication. Finally, the paper suggests studies on emotions and happiness to promote community well-being and health as an immerging research domain for applied linguists.

Creativity of an advertisement in building public perception is something that ad producers often do to promote their products or services to attract many interested people. However, contemporary advertising production began to experience a shift. In the past, advertisements generally used the hard selling method; but now they have changed to soft selling, which do not to introduce or sell their products directly. Contemporary advertising often represent audiences and things that are close to daily life, for example Gojek "Cerdikiawan" #pastiadajalan advertising. Thus, this research is interested in studying that advertisement. We tried to peel one by one of the signs that exist in Gojek "Cerdikiawan". The method used is qualitative with Roland Barthes' semiotics analysis. This study aims to determine the representation of optimism in advertising and identify the meanings of denotation, connotation, and myth displayed by Gojek "Cerdikiawan". The discussion of this research includes visible visual elements and also the narrative voice of the advertisement. This study conclude that the meaning of denotation and connotation gives rise to a perception which is an ideology that ad producers want to display. Ideology contained in this advertisement is the optimism, which is shown in each scene. It is a representation of all groups of people and their daily lives which are full of challenges. The ad also represents that every problem can definitely be solved in a way that might not be thought of, with creative ideas, and with an optimistic attitude of the people. Gojek "Cerdikiawan" is an advertising in the form of soft selling with a fairly long duration packed with interesting stories.

The article discusses the means of verbalizing the concept 'happiness / baxt both as a universal and nationally specific mental structure in the English and Uzbek languages. Keywords: cognitive and comparative linguistics, concept, lexico-phraseological units, evaluativeness, national-cultural specificity. I. INTRODUCTION One of the actual terms in modern cognitive linguistics and cultural linguistics is the term 'concept'. It attracts the attention of many researchers interested in issues related to the structure and properties of human thinking. After analyzing the most diverse views on the nature of the concept, scientists came to certain conclusions, namely: the concept is not a special type of abstract names, but a special perspective of their consideration, uniting all the knowledge and ideas accumulated by the people. The concept is based on the linguoculturological field of a hierarchical system of units that have a common meaning and reflect the system of corresponding cultural concepts [2]. Recently, the number of studies devoted to the study of concepts has increased in Uzbekistan. For the analysis, we have chosen the cultural concept happiness / baxt in English and Uzbek languages. This concept is considered from the standpoint of comparative linguistics and translation studies in terms of the analysis of lexico-phraseological fields of nuclear lexemes 'happiness / baxt'. It should be noted that a certain concept of happiness is one of the key concepts that organize the subject's life world, which largely determines how he perceives himself and how he perceives objective reality. A person builds his world based on these ideas about happiness. People cannot live without making any judgments about the concept of happiness. The word 'happiness (baxt)' sounds differently in different languages, in each language it has its own synonyms. Happiness-multidimensional integrative education, including intellectual, general axiological, emotional assessment in the form of joy or satisfaction. It is believed that the mental existence of abstract categories in everyday, linguistic consciousness is predominantly intuitive, these concepts do not have a discursive representation here [1]. Exploring the verbalization of the concept 'happiness / baxt 'in the English and Uzbek pictures of the world made it possible to draw conclusions that both general and specific aspects are observed in the perception of this concept, which allows us to consider this concept as a universal and nationally specific mental structure. The concept 'happiness / baxt' is understood as a feeling of a person that expresses satisfaction, hence we can assume that the feeling 'happiness / baxt', associated with emotions close to joy, is always considered as a feeling against the background of joy. The nuclear lexeme representing the concept 'happiness' in English is the lexeme 'happiness', and in Uzbek it is baxt. In English, the feeling of happiness 'happiness' can be expressed by such basic concepts as 'luck' (baxt), 'preasure' (mamnunlik), 'joy' (xursandchilik), 'delight' (zavq), 'contentment' (shodlik) ... In the Uzbek language, the lexical-semantic field 'baxt is manifested in the following concepts as' saod '(the highest degree of happiness),' omad '(luck),' shodlik '(fun),' xursandchilik '(joy),' taqdir (fate). The similarity of the lexical-semantic fields is manifested in the one-part nature of their kernels. Both in English and in Uzbek, the lexical-semantic fields contain an element of expression of happiness as a feeling. In both languages, 'happiness/baxt' forms factors that cause the subject to evaluate positively significant points. In etymological dictionaries, the concept of 'happiness' is represented as the noun 'happiness', which goes back to the noun 'hap' (chance, luck), which according to the data. Cassell's concise English dictionary and A concise etymological dictionary of the English language are of Scandinavian origin. The considered dictionaries in the interpretation of the further existence of this lexeme in the English language, on the whole, are unanimous: the adjective 'happy' (happy) and the noun 'happiness' (happiness) were formed in the Middle English period in a suffix way.

Those who say that money can't buy happiness don't know where to shop."-Anon-INTRoDUcTIoN Does money buy a lot of happiness? Not much, or none? Does economic growth really cause Indonesian to be better off? These are important but tickling questions. Life has its ups and downs. It would not be thought profound to say that someone who becomes unemployed or has little income generally becomes less happy, or that someone who gets married or becomes richer generally becomes happier. Which one is better: a large pay rise or getting married? Recently, there has been no way to assess the size of different life events upon psychological health and well-being. There is a few economic theory, as well as Rayo and Becker (2007), Wilson and Gilbert (2005) and Graham and Oswald (2005) sketch theories of happiness adaptation. Their research highlights factors other than income that affect wellbeing. The economics of happiness is an approach to assessing welfare which combines the techniques typically used by economists with those more commonly used by psychologists. The determinant of economic happiness does not only observe income size, but also measure the well-being. The survey provides information of various factors affecting well-being, such as assets, health, marital status, education and age from large survey, following Easterlin (2004), Oswald (1997), Layard (2000). Empirically, well-being indicators and life quality of some individuals are determined by a seriously elected government. If someone were asked how much they were satisfied with and happy about their life, their answers will be able to influence the perception of individuals towards government institutions and public policies that should be taken to increase the quality of their life. This paper provides a brief introduction about happiness, which is then followed by a discussion on on how happiness index is usually measured and
