On Marrism and Soviet Yiddish Linguistics

2001, Slavic Almanach

This paper investigates the impact of Nikolay Ia. Marr’s obscurantist “Japhetic theory” (or “Japhetidology”, later renamed the “New Theory of Language”), which was elevated to a leading authority in Soviet scholarship in 1929, on Soviet Yiddish linguistics. In particular, the politics of the Kiev Institute for Jewish Proletarian Culture in the 1930 controversy around the so-called “Iazykfront” group is analyzed. In: Slavic Almanach, vol. 7/No. 10 (2001), pp. 165-190.
