Tuesday Tumblers

I SWEAR the 20 gallon crock is
not completely full of scraps!

It's lunchtime and I'm sitting here eating a pb&j with *fresh* homemade strawberry jam! What could be better?! The only thing I could come up with would have been homemade bread and since I just got a bread machine cookbook at the library so that might could be on tonight's short list!!

At the end of last week I was in the mood to sew on my machine (I know, weird!, tired of hexies??). I've had this fabric since it first hit the shelves in my LQS and I had wanted to make a tumbler quilt but just never seemed to get to it. Then I saw a Missouri Star Quilt Company youtube video on tumblers made to look like honeycombs and I knew it was the project for me...ASAP! LOL!

I plotted the project in EQ but it still came out a bit long for me. Never fear, I've decided to only put the striped border on the 2 sides with the "horizontal" stripe to trick the eye in to thinking the quilt is wider, even if it's still a bit long. I didn't have enough of a dark green for an inner border but I found this olive green (I swear it matches in person) over the weekend  :^)

It feels good to make progress on a project!

Honeycomb Tumblers

Sooo...remember how I took a blogging break so I could have surgery last week? Well after sitting in the waiting room for almost 2 hours they cancelled it! There were technical problems in the OR so they started with the first victims patients of the day and cancelled as they needed. And I had thought being the first victim patient was a good thing since the doc wouldn't be tired yet...

Strangely enough, the 20 minute drive home took 6 hours because we had 3 rescue calls right on top of each other and that meant I was at the hospital 3 times (we didn't transport one of the patients) and all the nurses were laughing WITH me! For the patients it was a good thing surgery was cancelled but I wasn't so happy about it at first.

I had time to use up so I still took last Thursday and Friday off - I think it's the first 5 day weekend I've ever had where I didn't go somewhere. I sewed and sewed and sewed. It was nice but I finally had to get out of the house on Sunday. LOL.

I swiped this idea from a youtube video from Missouri Star Quilt Company. I've had the fabric for a while and knew I wanted a tumbler quilt but I thought this was a fun take on the standard tumblers. It's a little more red than I like but I don't want to buy more fabric in the other colors so it is what it is. I'm hoping the border and binding will balance it...

This is my border fabric. Since the quilt is a little long, I might just put borders on 2 sides. I'll decide that once I finally get the tumblers sewn together.

PS - yes, surgery has been rescheduled and there will be another blogging break - I'll let you know when as the date approaches in June.

Design Wall Monday

Chaos - that's the only word I can think of to describe this mess...it is organized tho!

From the left on the wall:
  • a kitty panel on the bottom - waiting for inspiration
  • Tumbler table runner - waiting for time to piece it
  • Tumbler flag - top is put together and I have purchased backing. I know how I want to quilt it and I know that I want to keep the angled edges which means it has a "tucked in" edge that is edge stitched and no binding. Any recommendations on the best way to do this? I am guessing sew the three layers around edges and then turn right side out but do you quilt before or after that?
  • 2 more civil war blocks completed yesterday
  • 3 dresden plate mug rugs that need quilting and binding
  • Several hexie diamonds that I have started stitching together with the black sashing
  • The angel panel has been there a year and a half - I like to look at her but have no plans to do anything with her yet. Anyone have ideas?
  • Top right is a border design that has also been there ages. I don't like it very much and that's why it's still there and I'm sticking to it...
On the table:
  • The white baskets have a pieced border I am working on.
  • One green basket is leftovers from a "camping" tablerunner I made for Mom and Dad's new camper - they need to be trimmed and put away. Actually I have enough to make a second runner.
  • The next two green baskets are bits that need to be trimmed and selvages that need to be put in their box
  • The stack of blue fat quarters on the cutting mat are for another Civil War block
  • The bag of Snickers is what keeps me sane. Not really. Ok, maybe.

Project Snippets

I've got a few things slapped up on the design wall...

... on the left: tumbler blocks cut from charm squares with my new ruler
...on the bottom: several in-progress rug mugs (they are addictive but that is the last of the veggie fabric!)
...on the middle/right: I now have two of four sections of the hexie BathroomQuilt completed. (Above are hexie diamonds for another project) They are not actually joined yet until I do one of the side sections to see how much "white space" I need between the four sections. I'll be at a conference next week so this will be a good travel project.
