Fan Choy a.k.a steamed rice 饭菜

I saw this Fan Choy in Honey Bee Sweet's IG. According to her, Fan Choy is a common breakfast in Singapore. It does look like Lor Mai Gai 糯米鸡 , but Fan Choy is consists of Char Siew (BBQ meat) and Hard- boiled eggs steamed with rice or glutinous rice.  I love everything with glutinous rice, immediately I make this Fan Choy ^_^.



 
I find use store-bought Char Siew is quicker than use chicken like Lor Mai Gai..
 




 
You have to adjust the seasonings for the rice, as the Char Siew sauce from difference stall might taste differencely.

 
And this time I did not pre-cooked the glutinous rice like last time, simply use the raw rice and just need to steam longer.

 
Like usual, we enjoyed this with chili sauce, yum!


Fan Choy a.k.a steamed rice 饭菜
*makes 6 bowls (4" diameter)

400g glutinous rice, soak for 4hrs or you can use normal white rice
150g Char Siew (BBQ meat), sliced
½ cup Char Siew sauce, obtain from the stall where you buy the char siew
3 hard-boiled eggs, shelled and halved
2 Shiitake Mushroom (soaked in water till soften), slice into 3 pcs each
Water 

Seasonings for rice
1tbsp light soy sauce
1/2tbsp dark soy sauce
1/2tbsp dark caramel soy sauce ( to get darker colour)
1/2tbsp oyster sauce
1tsp and 1/4tsp salt or to taste 

Method

  1. Mix all seasonings with soaked glutinuous rice evenly, set aside.
  2. Distribute Char Siew slices, hard-boiled eggs and mushroom evenly in each of the bowls.
  3. Spoon about 1 and 1/2tbsp Char Siew sauce over the ingredients.
  4. Fill the soaked glutinuous rice over the bowl about 90% full, then add 4tbsp water to cover the rice.
  5. Steam over high heat for 45mins.

You bet....Im going to make this too as I love anything with glutinous rice. Hmm....how come I never heard of fan choy before....

Hi Sonia, oh yes this Fan Choy is very common in Singapore but less freshly handmade stall now. Mostly frozen cooked products that coffee shops purchased and put them in steamer. In the 70s, some traditional coffee shops would have kitchens freshly made these steamed breakfast and to what I know the loh mai kai is glutinous rice and fan choy is rice along side with some baos. I used to run into the kitchen (I was a little girl then) to see what they made. Now, I'm glad that the market near my place has a stall selling freshly made dim sum daily but make Fan Choy only on Sat/Sun.

I never heard of Fan Choy either but it looks very much like our lo mai kai. I too like glutinous rice a lot but now I can't eat too much of it. Old already ha ha..

First time I came across Fan Choy .Good news for me as doctor advised me not to eat too much glutinous rice, so I can used brown rice to cook this instead. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe as now I have no reason not to eat this delicacies.

Nice and delicious fan choy! I prefer this to lor mai gai especially those made with rice as I tend to get bloated after consuming glutinous ones.

Hi Sonia, if I am using normal white rice, do I have to soak for hours? Can I don't cook the rice in the rice cooker but just steam as per your method? Still steam for the same timing? Thanks!
