Poetry in the Subway
Few days ago late in the evening I was returning home by subway. And saw the stickers with poems of Francesco Petrarca on the carriage walls, in two languages together with the biography of the poet.
That's what I read: The train "Poetry in the Underground" is the unique project, aiming to make poetry treasures closer to the passengers, traveling underground. Project started in November 2010 with the publication of Chilean poetry as dedication to 200 years of independence of Chile.
2011 is the year of Russian-Italian friendship, so the walls of the cars have stickers with poems of Petrarca, Dante Alighieri and other famous Italian poets.
The train was discovered at Filiovskaya (light blue) line, Alexandrovsky Sad-Mezhdunarodnaya stations.

Decoration
Scared? When I saw these two kids at the entrance to the subway station "Rimskaya" (Roman), I was scared too.
But there is no reason to fear. The info from Wiki explains it all:
It is new station and was constructed in 1995. Italian architects J.P. Imbrigi and A. Quatrocci were in charge of the station decoration. The theme was "Roman attractions". The sculpture portrays infants Romulus and Remus - the founders of Rome.

Kievskaya Metro Station
This is the interchange between Kievskaya stations from the Circle line to the Light Blue line. Straight ahead is a booth where you can buy plane and train tickets, and to the left there's a tiny pharmacy and a fast food stand. You can see the people rushing by - everyone here is constantly in motion! Also notice the gorgeous details on the ceiling and on the columns - click to make it bigger.

Theme Day: Public Transportation
The Moscow metro has 4 special theme trains - pictured here is my favorite - the 'Reading Moscow' train.
This inside of each wagon is painted, and on the walls there are excerpts and illustrations from many famous books and stories. It always makes me happy when I catch this train :) If you enlarge the picture below,
you can see one of the illustrations on the inside of the wagon!

Vystavochnaya Metro
I'll take you to another metro station today, this time it's a new addition to the light blue line in the west of the city (see map below in Irina's post). This is Vystavochnaya, one of the two stops that take you to Moscow's new business center/collection of skyscrapers - Moscow City. The station itself is very modern and has a futuristic feel to it. It also contains a small picture gallery (the sign on the right reads 'Metro Gallery') and right now it's showing a collection of photos of the Parisian metro. It's a nice touch, and makes waiting for your train to come a bit more pleasant. The trains actually arrive on the level below this (see bottom pic), giving this metro an even more open feeling to it.

Moscow Metro
I would like to follow Ashira's post, so today I post the Moscow metro map. If we intend to show you all the stations, you will have to be sticked to our blog for half a year. Which is so good.
Here are few links to my favorite stations (great site about metro history and today, full of photos, but only in Russian (site link).
Komsomolskaya
Kropotkinskaya
Ploshad revolutsii (Revolution Square)
And the photo I made few days ago (when seeds-aircraft from previous post hit me in the head) of the subway station "Vorobievy Gory". It is located inside the bridge above Moksva-river.
Irina's (the blog founder) post about the inside of the station is here (link)
And here is the link to my post showing the view of the bridge from above (link).

Updated following the comment: They are changing the cars to the new ones, so it is not the problem now. The problem popped up during the extreme heat in the summer 2010: the metro is not air-conditioned, and the temperatures down there reached 50-55C (130-140F - if I recalculate right). The ventilation system was organized in 50-70th of 20th century and can hardly survive the growth of the metro users of 21st century(.

Varshavskaya Metro
A mural inside of Varshavskaya Metro
I took a little detour on my way home yesterday to check out the shortest line on the metro - it only has 3 stops! It connects the dark green and grey lines of the metro in the southern part of Moscow. The sign below is showing the other stations - on the left, Kashiraskaya, and on the right, Kakhovskaya. Not too many options there! Varshav is the Russian name for Warsaw, Poland - that's the theme of this station. Does anyone know what these buildings are?

Marina Rosha
This is the entrance to the Marina Rosha metro station. It's a brand new station, only opened about a month ago - which is why it looks so modern! It's the first station I've seen with a handicap ramp. There are lights to indicate where the stairs are (the white lines on the ground) and through the doors you can see the green lights of the turnstiles. I think they're actually too bright. Everything is streamlined, and you can certainly tell the difference between the new stations and the older ones. Both have their own charm.
Check back tomorrow, I'll show you the inside of the station!

Metromost
Friday evening. This road, Prospekt Vernadskogo, is heading straight to the centre of the city, to the church of Christ the Saviour, seen in the distance. Main traffic is on the left side of the road, as everybody (the ones, who did not do it earlier) going out of the city. Weather forecast promised high temperatures for this week-end, and was true.
This road is the bridge over Moskva-river. And the lower part of the bridge is underground (metro) station. So I promise to spot the bridge in full glory next time. For this post I want to show the panoramic view from above the bridge.
Google map, Mr.Gomez!
For a change, let's do some training in foreign language:
SevOdnya v gOrode Ochen jArka. It is very hot in the city today. (Almost common phrase for Northern hemisphere, I think:-))))

Going up
This is an escalator in the Rimskaya metro station. It's a bit more modern looking than some of the other stations, but that's because it opened in 1995. Many of the stations have these strange lights in them, maybe they had them left over from earlier years?
And to answer everyone's questions about Fisheria - It looked like it was a restaurant. I wasn't hungry, and I'm not really a fish person, so I didn't go inside. I'll make another trip to find out for sure, and I'll let you all know when I do!

You can't escape commercialism
This is the walkway between Komsomolskaya red and circle line stations in the metro. You have an example of beautiful details from the past, and advertisements for a mobile phone company right next to each other!

The River
As I know from weather forecast, winter cold turned to usual Moscow weather (0Celsius (32F) and grey sky). The photo confirms.
In front is Moskva-river with metro (subway) bridge and a train on it, two yellow buildings are the apartments, modern grey in the middle is British Embassy, far behind the City Hall offices building.

Underground/subway/metro
