Modal Verbs
• also known as “auxiliary verb” (helping verbs) or
simply “modals”
• express various shades of meaning, such as
necessity, possibility, permission, ability, and
obligation.
Ex. You must

necessary for the subject (“you”) to perform the
action of the verb (“leave”).
Modal Verbs of Permission
• used to express permission indicate
whether someone is allowed or authorized
to do something.
• “may” “can” and “could” – MAY (most
formal and polite); CAN (casual); COULD

Modal Verbs of Obligation
• used to express obligation.
• HAVE TO – the obligation comes from
someone else; NOT from the speaker.
Usually refers to a rule or law.

• used to express that something is not allowed
(prohibited).
• CAN’T/ CANNOT– usually gives the idea of
