communicating, we can learn how someone feels and what they are trying to say. Sometimes,
we communicate for some purposes either asking for permission to our parents, prohibiting your

Below is a sample of a conversation that you probably encounter in school. Read the
comic strips below then analyze the underlined words. Afterward, answer the questions that
follow.

Prohibition- These situations are the opposite of giving permission. They are used as negatives:
● Can’t – the most common way to prohibit something in English. It is not as formal as must not
or may not, but it is the most common.
You can’t smoke in the office.
●Must not – you can prohibit an action or make a rule against something.
You must not use a cell phone.
● May not- May not is the formal way to prohibit something.
You may not eat in the conference room.
