3. Reading ‘10 Tips How to Succeed in Your Career’ (to the book)
3a Read the article and find the heading for the paragraphs.
Once you graduate from college and find a job, your next immediate goal is to succeed in your career. As
the market has become so competitive, doing well in your job and moving forward with your career is very
important. But what can make you special? The answer is simply a strong desire to perform well. When
you have the right mindset, you will climb the career ladder.
Here are the top 10 career success secrets on how to succeed at work.
1) __________________________________________________________________________
When you bring fresh ideas to the table and take initiative, start new projects and create new opportunities
for the business in today's competitive career sphere, employers will be looking for you.
2) __________________________________________________________________________
One of the best ways to achieve career success is to keep assessing your performance and not wait for
annual appraisals. Set short-term goals when you're new to a job – create a detailed plan to achieve these
goals, break the tasks down into weekly or even daily tasks, fill out a small form at the end of the week or
even show your report to your managers at some point to show how you've progressed.
3) _________________________________________________________________________
To succeed in your career, you have to be willing to learn. After you’ve graduated, your professional life
will be very different from college. Sometimes what you’re supposed to do in your job, doesn’t correspond
with what you learnt at university. If you are not ready to take challenges and gain new skills, you will not
succeed.
4) __________________________________________________________________________
To succeed in your new job and achieve career success, you will have to be aware of what your managers
need. Try to be ahead of your boss by asking yourself, “If I were my boss, what would I want done next?”
When you get things done in time and take the initiative to do them yourself, you will show a positive
attitude to higher management.
5) __________________________________________________________________________
Communication is a key to an employee's and an organization's success. If your manager has to ask you for
a status report, you're not doing everything you could do. The idea is to clearly communicate and inform
that a task is done, and move on to the next task.
6) __________________________________________________________________________
Remember you're not paid for 'working hard' or 'staying busy.' At the end of the day, what matters to your
employer is how much you have done. Therefore, keep in mind that you're paid for achieving clearly
defined goals that significantly impact the company's performance and overall mission and vision. When
you’ve kept this goal-oriented mindset, it will help you to achieve career success.
7) __________________________________________________________________________
The value of action is far greater than that of just words. Use this as a principle of your work – instead of
talking about all the things you can do, and then never actually doing them, you should show management
what you are capable of.
8) __________________________________________________________________________
You need to ensure success when you start a new job. After you earn your boss' trust, he'll have less to
worry about and more free time to focus his attention on other pressing matters. As soon as your boss finds
you trustworthy, he'll delegate tasks to you. Make sure you meet your deadlines and keep your promises.
9) __________________________________________________________________________
It’s easy to turn your problems into your manager's problems. But you need to be the solution provider, not
the problem creator. Great employees solve problems. If you don't have the authority to give the final
verdict on a problem, then make sure you offer solutions to your boss and try to help as much as you can.
10) _________________________________________________________________________
Being a good employee requires compassion and understanding that your manager and other employees are
doing their best. When someone complains about a huge amount of work, it won’t do anyone any good. Try
sharing the responsibilities you are paid for to increase the level of performance.
a) Unless you show your actual contribution, your work won’t be appreciated
b) You won’t succeed until you are ready to learn
c) When you predict future needs, you’ll show the best results in management
d) When you are compassionate, you’ll achieve much more
e) Before you ensure someone, you will need to gain trust
f) Once you communicate well, you’ll get a necessary key
g) When you take initiative, the chances will get higher
h) First actions, then words
i) Be the solution provider
j) If you assess your performance regularly, you will the progress
