1. Express permission, obligation, and prohibition through the use of modals


2. Identify the modals expressing permission, obligation and prohibition
3. Communicate more clearly and effectively through proper use of modals in the activities

Express Permission, Obligation, and Prohibition Using Modals

Introduction: In this module, we are going to discuss first the Modals which expresses Obligation.
Below are the discussion of the topic and their examples.

What is a modal?
Modal- a type of auxiliary (helping) verb that is used to express: ability, possibility,
permission or obligation. 

What are the two types of modal verbs of obligation?

There are two types of modal verbs of obligation;

1. must and have to - those that primarily express a firm obligation or necessity.

Example:
- Drivers must follow rules, signs and symbols on the streets.
Remember: Following strictly traffic rules is an inescapable obligation or meaning you
cannot just ignore it.
- I have to sign in the attendance sheet in order for my attendance to this meeting to be
credited.
Remember: When attending meetings, you really have to sign in to the attendance sheet
so that your presence will be credited.

2. should and ought to- those that express a recommendation, advice or moral obligation .

Example:
- You ought to listen to your teacher.
Remember: Listening to your teacher during class in a student’s moral obligation.
- If you are not feeling well, you should go see your doctor.
Remember: The sentence above expresses recommendation to someone who is not
feeling well to go and see his doctor.

Modal Expressing Permission:

1. can- is another type of modal often used to ask for and give permission and as well as asking for
permission. It means something is allowed and can be done.

Ex. You can take a deep breath before rendering your speech. = (giving permission)
Can I enter the classroom? = (asking for permission)

Other usage of Can as a modal:


- It can also be used to express ability.
Ex. I can create 10 clay pots in an hour. = (expressing one’s ability to create many clay pots
in an hour)

Let’s Mix It Up!

- You can use now the new books in the library. = (giving permission)
- I can finish eating this big round cake in a minute. = (expressing one’s ability)
- Can I borrow your pen? (asking for permission)

Modal Expressing Prohibition:

1. can‘t and mustn‘t - are modals used to show that something is prohibited – it is not allowed.

Remember:
 Can‘t tells us that something is against the rules.

Example:

1. You can’t just simply violate the school’s rule on the wearing of school ID because it is
also for your own safety.
Remember: Wearing of school ID is an essential rule in a school.
2. You can’t have two lovers at the same time for it will surely break the other’s heart.
Remember: You can’t really have two lovers at the same time since it is not a good
practice.

 Mustn‘t is usually used when the obligation comes from the person who is speaking.

Example:

1. We mustn't forget our roles to keep our family strong.


Remember: The speaker in the sentence above expresses how he and another family
member should not forget their role (obligation) in the family in order to keep their family
strong.
2. I mustn’t forget to save atleast Php 2000 every payday so I can have my dream house in
five years.
Remember: The speaker in the sentence emphasizes how he must not forget his
obligation to save money in order to buy his dream house.

when it prohibits something that is against the rule and mustn’t when something is prohibited and the
obligation comes from the speaker. The first item is done for you.

Ex. I mustn’t miss her concert or else she will not invite me anymore to any of her upcoming events.
