2 Insulation Coordination & TOV study

FICHTNER
Introduction
 Insulation coordination is the "process of bringing the
insulation strengths of electrical equipment into the
proper relationship with expected over-voltages and with
the characteristics of surge protective devices“

 Equipments Capability is a Limitation

 PSCAD EMTDC software used for simulation and analysis.

3 Insulation Coordination & TOV study

FICHTNER
Equipment Capabilities
 Electrical Equipment Capabilities:
 Insulation strength of equipment (BIL and BSL)
 BIL – Basic Lightning Impulse Insulation Level
 BSL – Basic Switching Impulse Insulation Level

 All electrical equipment should operate within their BIL

and BSL limits

4 Insulation Coordination & TOV study

FICHTNER
Equipment Capabilities
 Circuit Breaker Capabilities
 (TRV) Transient Recovery Voltage or Restriking Voltage :
 A high frequency voltage transient that appears across the
contacts of CB when arc gets extinguished.

 (R.R.R.V.): Rate of Rise of Restriking Voltage

 TRV causes high dielectric stress between contacts of CB
 CB should capable interrupting rated SC Current under
specified limits of TRV and R.R.R.V

6 Insulation Coordination & TOV study

FICHTNER
Causes of Insulation Stress
 The various sources of insulation stress are
 Lightning Over Voltages (LOV)
 Produced by lightning flashes
 Switching Over Voltages (SOV)
 Produced by switching breakers and disconnecting switches
 Temporary Over Voltages (TOV)
 Produced by faults, generator over speed, Ferro-resonance etc.
 Normal power frequency voltages
 in presence of contamination

7 Insulation Coordination & TOV study

FICHTNER
Study Scope
Insulation co-ordination study includes:
 Determination of transient over-voltages (TOV)
 occurring due to lighting, switching, ferro-resonance etc
 Analyzing the system performance during TOV
 Comparison of TOV with insulation strength of electrical
equipment
 Mitigation for effects of over-voltages
 Selection of proper rating and location of surge arrester

8 Insulation Coordination & TOV study

FICHTNER
Simulation Tool PSCAD EMTDC
 Insulation coordination, correct operation, and adequate
functioning of the system protection.
 Transient phenomena can occur in a time frame of
 nanoseconds (VFFT)
 microseconds (Lightning )
 milliseconds (SOV, TRV and R.R.R.V because of switching Actions)
 second (In the case of ferro-resonance)
 Transients are usually composed of
 travelling waves on OHL and underground cables,
 oscillations in lumped n/w elements, generators, transformers so
on.
 Analytical transient calculations by hand is rather
cumbersome or even impossible.

Case Study 3: Series Resonance (Neutral Inversion)
 SHORT-TERM UNEARTHING OF SYSTEM
 The 11kV system fed from delta side of Transformer
 The system get earthed by the system cable shunt
capacitance between each phase to earth.
 If any phase conductor gets earthed via connection
having a high inductance
 (E.g: a voltage transformer, Motor winding faults)
 The resonance, high circulating currents and over-voltage
can occur.
 An intermittent arcing fault with high impedance can
cause similar over-voltages can occur.
