SPORTS
OFFICIATING
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, 75% of the students are
expected to:

a. Enumerate the roles/functions and qualities of the


officiating officials
b. Give the different officials of volleyball and basketball
c. Execute the hand signals ofvolleyball and basketball
d. Perform in front of class an output derived from the
hand signals of volleyball and basketball
e. Officiate a game( volleyball and basketball)
OFFICIATING OFFICIALS
- Manage and conduct competitions in all sports programs.
- Remain neutral throughout the competition.
- They do not side with any player or team.
QUALITIES:
1. Physical Qualities- he needs to have a high level of fitness to
be able to perform his job.
2. Emotional Qualities- confidence, practicing it through actual
game immersions and observations of game officiating activities
can help improve it.
3. Mental Qualities-stay focused, ability to handle pressure,
Thorough knowledge on the rules of the game, alertness
4. Social Qualities- ability to deal with others at any given situation.
Settle disputes without sacrificing the integrity of the game and team

BASKETBALL Officiating Officials

1. Lead Referee- control of the ball


2. Trail Referee- observes the movements of the player

HAND SIGNALS
- Gestures used by sports officials to
communicate to the players and audiences
especially game related events like fouls and
points.
Activity No. 1 DO IT FOR ME BABY!!!!!
1. Class will be divided into 10 groups( BEC) and 7
groups (SSC).
2. The teacher will show a hand signal/s OF
BASKETBALL on a screen.
3. After viewing it, the first group who can raise their
number will be the one to execute the hand signal
and explain the situation that we can apply that
signal/s.
4. The highest score will be the winner and will received
extra points.

JUMP BALL
Is called whenever 2 or more players has
his/her hands on the ball but cannot claim
clear possession of the ball.
TRAVELING
Illegal movement in which a player in
possession of the ball pivots, jumps, or shuffles
the feet improperly.
SUBSTITUTION
Signals to replace a player in the court.
START THE CLOCK

Signals the start of the timer.


STOP THE CLOCK

Signals the stopping of the timer.


STOP THE CLOCK
FOR FOUL
This hand signal stops the clock because a foul
has occurred.
HOLDING FOUL
This signal is called whenever a player on the court
regardless of team, holds a player on the oppsing
team during game-play..
BLOCKING FOUL
Illegal contact that impedes the progress
of an opponent.
PUSHING FOUL
This signal is called when a player initiates
strong contact against an opposing player by
pushing.
TECHNICAL FOUL
A penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct or
violations by team members on the floor or
seated on the bench. It may also be assessed
for illegal contact that occurs with an opponent
before the ball becomes live.
TIME OUT
Signals to the timer when to stop, respectively,
the official game clock.
DOUBLE DRIBBLE
Is called whenever a player places both hands on the
ball during a dribbling progression.

Or dribbles a second time after he has ended his 1st dribble.


GOAL COUNTS
( 2 POINTS)
This means that the goal is valid and give 2 points
to the scoring team.
GOAL COUNTS
3 POINTS
This means that the goal is valid and gives 3 points
to the scoring team.
NO SCORE
This hand signal is used to disallow the basket.
