PRESENT CONTINUOUS, FUNCTION

The present continuous (also called present progressive)


is a verb tense which is used to show that an ongoing action
is happening now, either at the moment of speech or now in
a larger sense. Can also be used to show that an action is
going to take place in the near future.
THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS IS
USED:
To describe an action that is going on at this moment
e.g. You are using the internet
You are studying English grammar.

To describe an action that is going on during this period of time or a trend, e.g.
Are you still working for the same company?

To describe an action or event in the future, which has already been planes or
prepared (See also ways of expressing the future) e.g. I´m meting my boyfriend
tonight.

To describe a temporary event or situation,


e.g. Julie is living in Paris for a few months (usually she lives in London).

With always , forever, constantly, to describe and emphasize a continuing series of


repeated actions,
e.g. Harry and Lisa are always arguing!.

Verb Rule Example

When the verbs ending with take off the “e” taking
consonant + “e” Write Writing

Most verbs ending in double the last consonant batting; referring;

TIME ADVERBIALS AND
POSITION IN THE SENTENCE
• We use following time adverbials with the present continuous:
Just, now, at the moment, at present.

Their position in the sentence can be:

1. Between be and the –ing form of the verb:


I am just writing a test.

2. At the end of the sentence:


When are learning English now.

3. At the beginning of the sentence:


At present, many scientists are working on a cure against AIDS.

IN A CONTINUOUS TENSE:
1. Verbs about knowing or not knowing:
Believe, imagine, remember, suppose, know , realize, understand.

2. Verb about appearance:


Appear, resemble, seem.

3. Verbs about senses:


Hear, see, smell, taste.

Belong, need own, posses, want, wish.
