Crafters, artists to gather for festival
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Haddonfield Sun
Local crafters and professional
artists are once again gearing up
for the largest crafts and fine arts
festival in the area.
The 20th Annual Haddonfield
Fine Arts and Crafts Festival will
be held over two days along Kings
Highway, most likely drawing
more than 100,000 visitors to the
borough over the weekend. The
festival will be held on Saturday,
July 14, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and
Sunday, July 15, from 11 a.m. to 5
p.m.
As always, the festival will host
a wide array of crafters and
artists for the weekend. The festi-
val will include arts and crafts,
such as ceramics, glass, jewelry,
wood, fiber, metal, paper, draw-
ings, paintings, photography and
wearable art.
The nationally ranked festival
is not only the areas largest fami-
ly-friendly event, it draws family-
run craft businesses from across
the country, according to a press
release about the festival.
The festival is located along
Kings Highway between Wash-
ington and Haddon Avenue and
along Tanner Street to Euclid Av-
enue. The free event is easily ac-
cessible from area bridges or by
taking the PATCO Speedline to
the heart of the shopping district.
Parking is also free during the
Special to The Sun

Parties agree to potential sale
of Bancroft site for public use
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Haddonfield Sun
Its been a long time coming,
but Commissioner Ed Borden
and Steve Weinstein released a
joint statement last week an-
nouncing that negotiations with
Bancroft have resulted in a pro-
posed letter of intent for the pur-
chase of the Bancroft site for pub-
lic use.
According to the statement, the
proposed purchase price agreed
upon by all parties including
Bancroft is $12,192,500 for the
19.22-acre property. The purchase
price is the current assessed
property value of the Bancroft
campus, according to representa-
tives.
Bancroft has agreed to the let-
ter of intent. First of all, the
process starts with a letter of in-
tent that will be signed by all the
parties, then that will be followed
by a formal agreement of sale
and the signing of more extensive
documents, Weinstein said.
Then we would move to the ref-
erendum which has to be ap-
proved by the Department of Ed-
ucation, have the referendum,
and then, assuming it was suc-
cessful, we would move forward.
The proposed letter of intent
will be the subject of three public
meetings. The first will be a joint
board of education and commis-
sioner meeting on Wednesday,
July 18, at 7 p.m. in the borough
hall auditorium. The terms of the
proposed agreement will be pre-
sented and public comment will
be taken. Neither governing body
will take action at this meeting.
Following that meeting, the
commissioners will consider ac-
tion at their meeting on July 23,
and the BOE will hold a special
meeting for its decision.

two-day festival.
There will be more than 250
original crafters and artists at the
two-day festival.
Among the crafters and artists
this year are Gordon Fine Arts, a
husband and wife team that spe-
cializes in paintings and mix-
metal jewelry. According to a rep-
resentative of the festival, Gor-
don Fine Arts showcases the col-
laborative works of artists David
E. Gordon and Sue Brown Gor-
don.
Interested in something with a
little bit more of a kick? Why not
stop by Matt Johnsons booth and
check out his creations? Naomi
Johnson of Picture That Designs
has been creating one-of-a-kind
off-the-loom bead weaving pieces
for five years and after attending
Naomis shows, her husband
Matt was inspired to take up his
own craft, using recycled bottles
to make glass-hanging mobiles.
His pieces include wine, alcohol,
and signature-etched bottle col-
lections.
A first at the festival, sisters
Jerrie and Marge Ferrell collabo-
rate to create a variety of pieces
such as upcycled label coasters
and gemstone jewelry. The sisters
will be bringing their business,
Naturally by Marge, to the festi-
val for first time.
Coming back to the festival is
longtime participant Maya Hand-
bags and Jewelry. The mother-
daughter duo Veni and Maya
Evangelista create handbags and
jewelry. Their designs mix a wide
variety of materials, including
semi-precious stones, textural
leathers, oxidized metals, metal-
lic threaded cords, and crystal.
The event, as always, is free to
the public. Because of large
crowds people from outside of the
borough are encouraged to take
PATCO to the Haddonfield station
and walk the short distance to
Kings Highway.

H
e sat there, with a blank face,
as he heard he was guilty on
45 of 48 charges of sexual
abuse of minors. And its likely Jerry
Sandusky, the former Penn State assis-
tant football coach who went so far as
to start a charity for neglected chil-
dren, will never see the light of day
again once hes sentenced in Septem-
ber.
And when that sentence comes
down, is there any doubt it will be just?
Regardless of what the sentence is,
the entire Sandusky ordeal is a re-
minder of just how important it is for
people to speak up on the matter of
sexual abuse.
If youre a witness to such an atroci-
ty, you must speak up and let the au-
thorities know.
If you are a family member of an
abuser or of someone who has been
abused you must let the authorities
know. And if youre a victim, as
painful as it might seem, you must
speak up and you must let the author-
ities know. For if weve learned any-
thing from this case, its just how im-
portant one voice could be if its used
wisely. If someone anyone had spo-
ken up in the 1990s, its possible others
could have been spared from this mon-
ster and his sickening abuse.
And, weve also learned, quite clear-
ly, that as painful as it is for those who
were abused to speak up, doing so
could very well lead to justice being
served and it could lead to sexual
predators being stopped in their
tracks.
All it takes is one conversation: to a
loved one, to a teacher, to a police offi-
cer. And the rest will be taken care of,
with luck, swiftly and justly. Sandusky
is where he belongs behind bars. And
if one just one more predator can be
taken off the streets because someone,
somewhere speaks up after thinking of
this case, then it will be all worth it in
the end.
No one, ever, should have to go
through what those kids went through.
Ever again.

What exactly happened
with Obama Care?
Do you understand what happened with
the Obama Care? I dont and listening to
Fox and MSNBC for six hours hasn't
helped much. Ill give it some time, espe-
cially since I haven't read all 2,700 pages. I
wonder, though, has a sleeping giant been
awakened?
Heres some really bad news. I keep say-
ing you cant let public unions get between
you and your taxes, and representatives.
Heres why. Stockton City, Calif., is bank-
rupt. Its the largest city so far to go that
route and several other cities are hanging
by the proverbial thread. Inflated dreamy
union contracts are the common thread,
along with early retirements, and ridicu-
lous health packages.
Heres some hope for us. The Supreme
Court struck down the service employees
international union dues collection and
must join tactics. Using union dues for
political advertising was also deemed a no-
no.
Gov. Christie helped clarify how a state
legislator uses his little boys cookie on the
table to raise or lower your taxes. His point
was if we are good, like the little boy, he
might lower our taxes. The governor re-
minded the rep that the money he would
give us back is our money, not his.
Welcome back Chase Utley.

Is BOEs turf field financial
commitment a smart one?
The Haddonfield Board of Education, on
May 10, pledged $150,000 of taxpayers
money for two artificial turf fields after
the turf field community citizens group
submitted its proposal for turf fields along
with a request for financial support. The
turf field community citizens group also
presented their proposal to the borough
commissioners on May 22, with a request
of $356,000 for the same fields with the un-
derstanding that the borough will absorb
the cost of Anniversary Field in its entire-
ty. This means that the Haddonfield tax-
payers will be absorbing the shortfall in
costs for the borough-owned field. Despite
the lack of advanced notice of the agenda
and turf field resolution to the public as
well as related technical documents, the
commissioners voted to approve the re-
quested sum of money by adopting resolu-
tion 2012-05-22-114, which states that the
$356,000 would be funded in whole or part
from the 2013 Borough Capital Budget or
Open Space Fund as determined at a later
time.
These amounts represent a total com-
mitment of $506,000 of taxpayers money

for turf fields upon the promise of
the Haddonfield Turf Field Com-
mittee to raise $500,000 through
voluntary donations to complete
the $1,006,000 project (imagine
winning the lottery for $500,000
and then having to expend
$506,000 to retrieve it). Future
costs to the school district for
maintenance and replacement of
the turf will also become the re-
sponsibility of the taxpayers.
Throughout the years, Haddon-
field taxpayers have generously
supported the school district by
passing $47 million in voter-ap-
proved bonds. Of this total, $34
million have been approved since
1999 for repairs, renovations and
construction to all the districts
buildings. The district expends
approximately $2 million on out-
standing debt yearly with the
final payment due in 2025. In Feb-
ruary, the BOE presented to the
public their proposal to purchase
the entire 19-acre parcel of Ban-
croft property. The BOEs project-
ed costs of $17 million would pro-
vide for the purchase price of the
Bancroft site, demolition, road
and sidewalk improvements, con-
struction of turf fields and park-
ing on the west side of Hopkins
Lane as well as various engineer-
ing, planning, environmental and
legal fees, etc. What are not ad-
dressed in this bond however, are
those costs for future phases of
construction by the school dis-
trict.
Haddonfield taxpayers are fac-
ing the possibility of a multi mil-
lion-dollar school bond issue to
purchase Bancroft. The BOE has
expressed a desire to hold a spe-
cial referendum in January 2013.
Because such a referendum
would incur special election ex-
penses, it could possibly cost the
district $20,000 or more. It would
be judicious for the BOE to hold
the referendum in November
thereby saving the taxpayers the
added election costs. If the BOEs
estimated $17 million bond re-
ceives voter approval in the fu-
ture, it will add to our long-term
obligations of principal and in-
terest on existing bonds of ap-
proximately $27 million.

well maintained.
For the taxpayers, the school
buildings represent their largest
asset and therefore, the issues of
maintenance and repair merit
immediate attention. When prop-
er repairs and maintenance of
taxpayers assets are not ad-
dressed in a timely manner, the
conditions worsen and lead to
more problems and increased
costs to the taxpayers. The fund-
ing for repairs and renovations in
the school district to address is-
sues of safety, compliance and
function have been made through
periodic bond issues as far back
as 1986. Repair issues like these
should have been addressed with
the almost $14 million of funds
from the last voter-approved bond
of December 2004.
The Haddonfield School Dis-
tricts high rankings in national
and regional publications are pri-
marily based on academic
achievement. And these rankings
are a great source of pride among
the BOE, the borough and mem-
bers of the community. But while
the BOE seeks to maintain the
districts academic standings it
should also be equally committed
to maintaining the districts
buildings in which academic
learning and achievement
occurs 180 days throughout the
year.
Is the commitment of $150,000
to artificial turf fields a responsi-
ble position for the BOE to take
when attention to the unresolved
issues in our school buildings,
like leaky roofs and a substan-
dard track exist? Obviously after
considering a commitment for fi-
duciary responsibility and main-
taining the taxpayers largest in-
vestments, the plan seems ill con-
ceived and shortsighted. It is
hoped that the BOE and commis-
sioners, as stewards and elected
officials, will listen to their con-
stituents, prioritize spending
with the big picture in mind, and
use common sense in their deci-
sion-making.

14 THE HADDONFIELD SUN JULY 11-17, 2012
Final approval for the funding
for the project will be a bond ref-
erendum voted on by borough
residents. The referendum will
not be held in September as previ-
ously hoped for, Weinstein said,
but will be held in late January.
The board of education cannot
get approval from the state De-
partment of Education soon
enough to hold the referendum in
September.
It feels good that weve gotten
to this point. We went back and
forth with the negotiations, and I
think we were able to show that, if
Bancroft wants to sell, this is the
best price theyre going to get.
They hadnt come below $15 mil-
lion before this discussion. Were
happy about that, but I have to
point out we have a long way to
go, including public approval,
Weinstein said. Its a feel-good
day to get to this point, were
happy about that. We think there
is a legitimate opportunity for the
town, the district, and all of its
residents to acquire the property.
We know its not cheap, were
looking 20 to 30 years ahead.
The entire referendum would
likely be for about $16 million,
Weinstein said, including $2 mil-
lion for demolition costs and an-
other $2 million for sport fields.
At $16 million paid off over 20
years, the average assessed tax-
payer could expect to see an in-
crease of $265 each year in their
tax bill, Superintendent Richard
Perry said.
Commissioner Ed Borden said
the borough is still dedicated to
using the $955,000 of its open
space trust fund to pay for the
purchase. In addition, Borden
and Weinstein said they hoped to
receive substantial funding from
the state and Camden County.
For the past several months
Borden and Weinstein engaged
Bancroft representatives in nego-
tiations for the property.
Its worth noting that there
was a point when we were going
to walk away from the negotia-
tions, Borden said. At that point
they became more reasonable in
their purchase price.
According to the letter, Ban-
croft would have up to two years
to sign an agreement of sale for a
new site. Until that happens, the
school district would not have to
sell its bonds until Bancroft has a
firm agreement for a new loca-
tion.
Bancroft would have to imme-
diately begin looking for a new
site and prepare plans for con-
struction. Once the school district
has purchased the property, Ban-
croft may remain on the property
for two years while it is building a
new facility. If it stays on the
property for more than two years,
it will have to pay rent of $400,000
for the third year and $500,000 for
the fourth year. It may not stay on
the property for more than four
years, according to representa-
tives.
If it doesnt, Bancroft is subject
to repayment of all the debt serv-
ice paid by the district from the
beginning until it vacates.
Ownership of the property will
be divided between the district
and the borough based on the
funding available for open space
use and affordable housing.
Toni Pergolin, president and
CEO of Bancroft, said she hopes
that the borough voters approve
the referendum.
I am delighted to join the Had-
donfield borough commissioners
and the board of education in an-
nouncing an agreement reached
this week concerning the pro-
posed sale of Bancrofts Haddon-
field Campus to the borough. I am
pleased the residents of the bor-
ough will now have an opportuni-
ty to vote for this recommenda-
tion, given its long-term implica-
tions for the community, she
said in a released statement. We
have discussed the potential to
complete such a sale for seven
long years, and we feel the agree-
ment we are announcing today is
fair and reasonable for everyone,
which has been our sincere hope
in these discussions. My primary
responsibility is to make business
decisions that are in the best in-
terest of Bancroft and the people
we serve, and I believe that is the
case with this agreement, be-
cause it is a major step toward de-
veloping modern facilities for our
students. At the same time, this
agreement provides Haddonfield
the greatest flexibility for the use
of this strategically located prop-
erty for the current and future
needs of its residents and school
district.
