Heavy rainfall increases mosquito population
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Haddonfield Sun
The recent excessive amount
of rain experienced by the area
come with the likelihood of an
increased population of mosqui-
toes.
According to Dan Keashen, di-
rector of communications at
Camden County, June was the
second wettest ever in Camden
County. More than 8.5 inches of
rain has fallen since June 1.
That rain and severe weather
is really the catalyst for mosquito
breeding, Keashen said.
Theres a lot more standing
water around the region through
containers left out.
According to a Camden Coun-
ty release, residents should check
their property for any object that
holds water for more than a few
days.
All pre-adult mosquito stages
(eggs, larvae and pupae) must be
in stagnant water to develop into
adult mosquitoes.
Swimming pools are a com-
mon problem, the release said.
The county urges residents to
check and maintain pools often to
keep the area mosquito-free.
Pool covers can catch rainwa-
ter and become a mosquito devel-
opment site, but residents can
add a little chlorine to kill mos-
quitoes.

population comes the threat of
West Nile Virus, which is known
to cause neurological problems
in people that contract the dis-
ease.
Our county mosquito com-
mission checks a few thousand
mosquito breeding sites on a reg-
ular basis. This keeps the mos-
quito population low and breaks
up the cycles where diseases are
spread from various animals to
humans by a mosquito bite,
Freeholder Jeffrey Nash, liaison
to the Camden County Mosquito
Commission, said in the release.
According to the release, in
previous years, tests of crows
and other animals showed that
West Nile Virus spread through-
out the East Coast and was found
in every county in New Jersey.
West Nile Virus grows in birds,
and is transmitted from bird to
bird by infected mosquitoes.
If mosquitoes infected with
the virus bite horses or humans,
they can also become sick. West
Nile Virus generally causes no
symptoms or mild flu-like symp-
toms.
However, those older than 50,
or those with a compromised im-
mune system, are at a higher risk
of more severe disease.
Its too early to tell how bad or
good the West Nile Virus disease

The Haddonfield Sun
Haddonfields Fine Arts and
Crafts Festival is coming back to
Haddonfield for the 21st year from
Saturday, July 13, to Sunday, July
14.
More than 250 vendors will be
spread out along Kings Highway
from Washington Avenue to Had-
don Avenue and along Tanner
Street to Euclid Avenue.
The festival is one of the largest
two-day outdoor Haddonfield
events, attracting more than
100,000 people, event organizer
Marcy Boroff said.
Its a great way of highlight-
ing Haddonfields wonderful
restaurants and stores, Boroff
said, adding the event is filled
with previous vendors and fresh
faces.
According to Boroff, 275 ven-
dors will display and sell items
ranging from handcrafted jewelry,
wooden rocking chairs, clothing,
toys, beauty products, artwork
and more.
Musicians, artists and other
crafters will also have tents set up
displaying their work.
Boroff said the festival gives
artists a chance to share their
work with the public. But if an
artist is not ready to have a tent at
the fair, Boroff said she encour-
ages him or her to visit the fair
and talk with other vendors.
Its a very supportive commu-
nity and people will help each
other, she said.
Haddonfield resident and
painter Missy Mohn Schwartz
will be at the event displaying her
artwork, as well as Collingswood
resident and handcrafted jeweler
Coco Paniora Salinas.
This year, the festival has an ad-
dition. Instead of vendors just set-
ting up on Kings Highway, there
will be 10 vendors, a moon bounce
and face painters on the sidewalk
between Haddon Avenue and Bor-
ough Hall.
We really want the crafters to
highlight the town. Its about the
crafters and its about the town,
Boroff said, adding most mark
this event on their calendar and
do their holiday shopping there.
But the craft show is not just
about highlighting crafters and
the town. It is about adding to the
historic feel of Haddonfield, she
said.
Our history is always evolv-
ing, and I think the craft fair in
Haddonfield is one of the things
they talk about, she said.
The fair is from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
on Saturday, July 13, and from
noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 14.
Admission and parking are free.
For more information about
the fair, visit www.haddonfield-

F
or once, New Jersey should get
some positive national atten-
tion. Last week, the state made
two major moves in a public higher ed-
ucation reorganization in an attempt
to put New Jersey colleges on the na-
tional map.
Rutgers University added two new
medical schools, immediately jumping
the school into the top 25 in the coun-
try for research funding. Gov. Christie
said it puts Rutgers on the path to
being one of Americas great research
institutions.
Rowan University also became a re-
search university through the reor-
ganization, giving New Jersey a solid
foothold of attractive public colleges
in the southern part of the state.
New Jersey is the 11th most popu-
lous state, with 8.8 million people, as of
July 1, 2012, despite being the fourth
smallest state in terms of size. Howev-
er, due to a lack of major public uni-
versities, many of the Garden States
college students were traveling to
neighboring states for higher educa-
tion.
Penn State University, Temple Uni-
versity, the University of Delaware,
the State University of New York, the
University of Maryland and the Uni-
versity of Connecticut are all popular
public school choices for New Jersey
students.
Over the last 10 years, Rutgers and
Rowan have made great strides in
keeping students in our home state,
and last weeks moves only further
that aim. We must continue to im-
prove our public universities, in addi-
tion to focusing on our local K-12 pub-
lic school districts.
If we keep our home-grown stu-
dents in state for public higher educa-
tion, then were all able to reap the re-
wards. If were able to go even further,
well be able to attract outside talent,
and become part of the list of dream
colleges for out-of-state students.
New Jersey is filled with promising
students and bright minds ready to be-
come world leaders.
Lets continue to foster that intelli-
gence, that drive and that desire right
here in New Jersey.
Producing more home-grown talent
Improvements at Rutgers, Rowan may keep students in-state for college

Residents request apologies
of board members for attitude
Short of asking for the resignations of
the members of the Haddonfield Zoning
Board of Adjustment, the residents of
Beechwood/Bryn Mawr/Maple avenues
are asking for their apologies because of
the disrespect and dismissive attitude ex-
hibited by them at their April, May and
June meetings.
Residents went to the June 18 board
meeting to express their concerns regard-
ing the variance process conducted on 645
Maple Ave.
The board refused to listen to these con-
cerns, stating that their decisions are
final, there is no appeal at the borough
level and our only recourse is an appeal to
the state or go to the press.
One board member accused the resi-
dents of making personal attacks and
another stated that the applicant was one
of the good guys. When a resident at-
tempted to speak, the chairman threat-
ened to evict her and have her escorted
from the meeting.
Residents concerns are: documents
were not correctly signed; the 10-day no-
tice to review new information was not
provided; the application did not contain a
certified site survey; there was no weigh-
ing of negative criteria versus benefits to
the community; required numbers were
not available to support the decision for
granting the variance; borough shade tree
issues were not part of the application; the
legal letter from one of our attorneys was
not given to the zoning board; the flooding
issue was not addressed properly; the pro-
posed plan is not in line with the character
of the neighborhood as claimed; and the
burden of proof was not on the applicant
as required by law.
Residents have tried numerous times to
resolve these items locally and amicably
but have constantly been rebuffed.
Such isolation of a public board from its
residents whom they volunteer to serve
does not allow for improvement of the
variance process nor advance the public
good

Mosquito commission
to continue to look
for problem areas
will be contracted this year,
Keashen said. We usually get
calls toward the end of the sum-
mer for West Nile Virus, which
happened last year.
Though the calls generally
begin in late summer/early fall,
the preventative actions to curb
the population have started.
Sprayings have begun in the
area and have been scheduled for
Haddonfield.
According to the release, the
mosquito spray is not harmful to
humans or pets, but residents
should avoid direct contact if you
have respiratory concerns or are
sensitive to irritants.
Additionally, the mosquito
commission will be looking for
problem areas throughout the
county.
Were really counting on resi-
dents to be our eyes and ears in
hazardous or places where mos-
quitoes breed, Keashen said.
Residents can report standing
water in their area, in addition to
reporting deceased birds.
Residents may report dead
crows and other select birds to
the Camden County Department
of Health and Human Services at
(856) 374-6197 under the direction
of Freeholder Carmen Ro-
driguez.
In previous years, testing by
the state laboratory has helped
track the spread of the virus.
Crow collections may be phased
out in select areas when enough
of this evidence has been collect-
ed, the release said.

More Information
Have you followed the
countys checklist to avoid
mosquito breeding?
According to the county,
residents should dispose of
unnecessary containers that
hold water. Containers that
need to be saved should be
turned upside down or put
holes in the bottom so all
water drains out.
Additionally, lift up flower-
pots and dump the water
from the dish underneath
every week, stock fish, or add
mosquito larvicide to orna-
mental ponds, change water
in birdbaths, fountains and
animal troughs weekly,
screen vents to septic and
other water tanks, store
small boats upside down and
large boats so they drain. If
covered, keep the tarp tight
so water does not pool on top.
Do not dump leaves or
grass clippings into a catch
basin or streams. Do not
allow water to collect on sag-
ging tarps or awnings, and do
not allow trashcan lids to fill
with water. For other helpful
tips and ways to avoid mos-
quitoes, visit www.camden-
county.com.

history teacher presented to a
group of teachers at the Indian
King Tavern.
Afterward, he loaded his car
with the artifacts he used in the
demonstration, but left four trays
of old coins, paper money and ar-
tifacts on the roof of his car and
drove off.
By the time he realized what
he had done the items were gone.
One was found in the middle of
Kings Highway near the high
school. The others are still miss-
ing. Should anyone know of their
whereabouts, please contact the
Indian King Museum at 429-6792
or the Haddonfield Police Depart-
ment at 429-3000.

Public works in process of
inventorying traffic signs
The Camden County Depart-
ment of Public Works is in the
process of inventorying traffic
signs on county roadways. The
county has contracted with
Maser consulting to perform the
Traffic Sign Inventory, which is
being done in two phases.
I consider the maintenance of
our county roadways to be a top
priority of the Freeholder Board,
and that includes improving the
placement and readability of our
traffic signs, said Freeholder
Ian Leonard, liaison to the Cam-
den County Department of Pub-
lic Works.
Residents and motorists may
see this inventory being conduct-
ed in their neighborhoods or dur-
ing their commutes.
During the first phase of the
project, the consultant is driving
a van called a Mobile Asset Col-
lection vehicle on every county
route. The MAC is equipped with
cameras and GPS units that cap-
ture roadway images and data.
This process may require driv-
ing a road several times to collect
the required data and should be
completed by the middle of July.
The second phase of the proj-
ect will start in mid-July and
should continue into mid-August.
During this phase, the consultant
will revisit each traffic sign at
night to measure its capacity to
reflect light. This is done by
using a reflectometer aimed at
the sign and will also be done at
night. Residents should not be
alarmed if they see this work
being done at night.
The Camden County Depart-
ment of Public Works is respon-
sible for maintaining over 400
center line miles of county road-
way and 50 bridges, Leonard
said. Ensuring we have the prop-
er, up-to-date, signage may seem
mundane to residents, but it is vi-
tally important for the safety of
drivers and pedestrians on our
streets.
To report concerns on Camden
County roadways, call our Public
Works Hotline at 566-2920 or visit
www.camdencounty.com.
Please recycle this newspaper.
