Question 4 [5 marks]
0.609 grams of ethanoic acid (C2H4O2) dissolve in 200 grams of benzene to form a solution that lowers the freezing
point of benzene to 5.40oC. [Ar: C=12, H=1, O=16].

(b) Explain why the molecular weight does not match with the known molecular formula of ethanoic acid.
[Freezing point of pure benzene is 5.53oC and Kf (benzene) = 5.12°C kg mol-1]. (2 marks)
Question 5 [6 marks]
(a) The frequency, v, of light absorbed by a transition metal complex ion can be determined using the relationship
ΔE = hv. Give two factors which result in a change in the frequency of light absorbed as a result of the reaction
of a complex ion. (2 marks)
(b) Explain why co-ordinate bonds can be formed between transition metal ions and water molecules. (2 marks)
(c) Titanium (IV) chloride reacts with propanone to form a complex compound in which two molecules of
propanone have combined with one molecule of titanium (IV) chloride. Draw a possible structure for the
complex formed, indicating clearly which atoms are bonded to titanium. (2 marks)
Question 6 [6 marks]
(a) Oleocanthal, Q, is a natural compound found in olive oil. It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties
and is thought to have a protective effect against Alzheimer’s disease.
When 40.0 cm3 of hexane was shaken with 10.0 cm3 of a solution containing 0.25 g of Q in 10.0 cm3 of
methanol, it was found that 0.060 g of Q was extracted into the hexane. Calculate the partition coefficient,
Kpartition, of Q between hexane and methanol. (2 marks)

water using twice 40 mL samples of CH2Cl2? The distribution coefficient (KD) is 4.6 (4 marks)
Question 7 [8 marks]
(a) A moss killer contains iron (II) sulphate. Some of the iron (II) sulphate gets oxidised to form iron (III) sulphate.
(i) Write the electronic configuration for Fe3+ and use it to explain why iron is a transition element.
[Atomic number of iron (Fe) is 26] (2 marks)
(ii) State four typical properties of compounds of a transition element. (2 marks)
(iii) Describe how aqueous sodium hydroxide can be used to distinguish between aqueous iron (II) sulphate and
aqueous iron (III) sulphate. (2 marks)
(b) Water is a simple molecule. The H—O—H bond angle in an isolated water molecule is 104.5°. The diagram
shows part of the [Cu(H2O)6]2+ ion and the H—O—H bond angle in the water ligand.
Explain why the H—O—H bond angle in the water ligand is 107° rather than 104.5°.
