SECTION A

1. Read the passage given below and answer the following questions: (1 x4 =4)

Metal hydrides are unquestionably the most useful reagents for the reduction
of carboxylic acids to produce primary alcohols. A diverse variety of derivatives
of B2H6 and LAH have been applied for the chemoselective reduction of
polyfunctional organic molecules. B2H6 is an excellent reagent for the rapid and
efficient reduction of aliphatic and aromatic carboxylic acids to produce borate
esters, which are hydrolyzed on work-up to produce primary alcohols.8 B2H6 is
frequently used in THF solution, in which it exists as the complex BH3·THF.
BH3·SMe2 in THF is an alternative very soluble, more stable reagent for
carboxylic acid reductions. BH3·THF and BH3·SMe2 rapidly reduce
aldehydes, ketones, lactones, carboxylic acids and tertiary amides at 0 °C in THF.
BH3·THF is a very convenient reagent for the reduction of α-amino acids and α-
acylamino acids (including peptides) to produce the corresponding β-amino
(acylamino) alcohols. Although borane in its various forms is invarably the
reagent of choice for carboxylic acid reduction, occasionally problems arise.
Alkenes may be hydroborated during the reaction.
Additionally, deoxygenation may be observed, particularly with electron-rich
heteroaromatic ring systems.

In the following questions (Q.No. 4- 8 ) a statement of assertion followed by a
statement of reason is given. Choose the correct answer out of the following
choices.
a) Both assertion and reason are correct statements, and reason is the
correct explanation of the assertion.
b) Both assertion and reason are correct statements, and reason is not
the correct explanation of the assertion.
c) Assertion is correct, but reason is wrong statement.
d) Assertion is wrong, but reason is correct statement.

4. Assertion: The total number of atoms present in a body centred

cubic lattice cell is two.
Reason : The lattice has eight atoms on the corners and one atom
within the body.
5. Assertion: If more and more solute is added to a solvent, the freezing
point of the solution keeps on reducing.
Reason : Presence of large amount of the solid solute does not
allow the solution to freeze.

6. Assertion: [FeF6]3- is a low spin complex.

Reason : Low spin complexes have lesser number of unpaired electrons.

7. Assertion : Hydrolysis of (-) -2- bromooctane proceeds with inversion of

configuration.
Reason : This reaction proceeds through the formation of a
carbocation.

8. Assertion : For a first order reaction, the concentration of the reactant

decreases exponentially with time.
Reason : Rate of reaction at any time depends upon the concentration of
the reactant at that time.
