L-4 Solids, Liquids and Gases

III. Answer the following questions:

1. What is matter? Name the three states of matter.
Ans: Any substance that has mass and occupies space is called matter.
The three states of matter are: Solids, liquids and Gases.
2. Differentiate between solids, liquids and gases in terms of their particles.
Ans: The difference between solids, liquids and gases in terms of their particles are:

Solids Liquids Gases

3) e.g.: book, bat e.g.: water, milk e.g.: oxygen, carbon-

dioxide
4)

3. Define the following:

a. Melting b. Condensation c. Evaporation d. Solidification
Ans: a. Melting: The process by which a solid change in to a liquid on heating is called melting.
b. Condensation: The process by which a gas change into a liquid on cooling is called
condensation.
c. Evaporation: The process by which water starts changing into water vapour is called
evaporation.
d. Solidification: The process by which a liquid change into a solid on cooling is called
solidification.
4. With the help of an example, describe solute, solvent and solution.
Ans: The substance that dissolves is called solute. E.g.: salt, sugar
The substance in which the solute gets dissolved is called the solvent. E.g.: water, milk
A solute and solvent together forms the solution. E.g.: salt solution, sugar solution

5. Differentiate between soluble substances and insoluble substances.

Ans:

1 Substances that dissolve completely Substances that do not dissolve completely in a
in a solvent to form a solution are solvent to form a solution are called insoluble
called soluble substances. substances.
2. E.g.: salt, sugar E.g.: sand, chalk

6. How does filtration help us to remove insoluble substance?

Ans: When an insoluble substance is passed through a filter, the insoluble substance gets trapped
in the filter. In this way filtration help us to remove insoluble substance. E.g.: Sand and water can
be separated by filtration process.
