Activity for General Chemistry 1 Week 1
Instructions: Answer the questions completely and show your solution.
1. There are two unlabeled reagent bottles with unknown substances. The only
available data are the following:
Substance on container A Substance on container B
Color Clear clear
Smell Fruity odor Odorless
Physical State liquid Solid
To determine their respective identities, what physical or chemical will you determine?
List 3 and rationalize your answers.

Electric Properties - Some materials carry electricity more efficiently than others. This
implies that electric charge can readily pass through them. Because copper wire is an
excellent conductor, it is used to carry electricity. Rubber and polymers, which do not
conduct easily, are employed to impede the passage of charge. Scientists can examine
the electric conductivity of an unknown material using the right instruments.

Magnetic Properties - Some materials are attracted to magnets, whereas others are not.
A paper clip can be picked up with a magnet, but not a plastic button or a wooden
match. Iron, cobalt, and nickel are magnetic, which means they respond to magnets,
while copper, aluminum, and zinc are not. Steel, which includes iron, is magnetic as
well.

Density - Wood, plastic, and steel all have varying densities. Many compounds'
densities have previously been established by scientists. As a consequence, the density
of an unknown material may be easily compared to the densities of known substances.
Finding any similar densities will provide you with information about the unknown
substance's probable identification. It is conceivable, however, for two distinct
substances to have the same density. In that scenario, further data would be required to
positively identify the drug.
2. A mixture has the following components with their respective physical properties.
Come up with a separation method that will separate and collect each component of the
mixture. (Hint: use more than one physical separation technique)
Water Table Salt Ethanol Iron granules
Boiling point, °C 100 1,465 78.4 2,862
Freezing Point / 0 801 -114.6 1,538
Melting point, °C
Solubility N/A Soluble in Soluble in Insoluble in
water water water

Distillation is a separation procedure that can separate a liquid from a mixture of two or
more liquids. It works because the ethanol in the mixture has a different boiling point
than the water and table salt. Evaporation is a separation process that we may use to
separate table salt from water and iron particles since it separates a solid substance
that has been dissolved in water or any other liquid. Distillation is a separation
procedure that can separate a liquid from a mixture of two or more liquids. It works
because the ethanol in the mixture has a different boiling point than the water and table
salt. Because iron granules are insoluble in water, we can separate them from the
mixture using filtration, and we can remove the iron granules using a strainer.
