III. Procedure

Teachers Activity Students Activity

A. Preliminary
Good afternoon class! Good afternoon, Ma’am.

So, before we start our discussion for (Ms. Suhian will lead the prayer)
today, may I ask Ms. Suhian to lead us a Lord, bless each and every student
prayer. here, as well as our teacher, as we embark
on another day of learning. Please give us
clear minds and open hearts so we can
grasp the knowledge and lessons set
before us. Help us to be attentive, and let
Your wisdom guide us in our studies.
Amen.

Before you take your seats kindly pick up

some pieces of paper under your chair and (Students will do as told)
arrange it properly.

Class secretary do we have any absent

today? None, Ma’am.

Okay very good.

So, before we start let me read to you our

classroom rules.

Now let’s have first an activity to awake

your body and minds. Our activity is called
“Pass the Rock”. In this game, I will play a
music while each of you are passing the
rock/paper and the one who will get the
paper when the music stops will recap our
topic last meeting. Is that clear? Yes, ma’am.

(Students will participate in the activity)

B. Review
So, Miss/Mr.______ what was our topic Our last topic was all about soil erosion. It
last meeting? Can you share your take is a gradual process that occurs when the
aways in the class. impact of water or wind detaches and
removes soil particles, causing the soil to
deteriorate.

Very good. Thank you for that.

C. Motivation
Now let’s have a game entitled “Scrambled Word
Relay”. On the screen, you will see scrambled
words that correlates what will be our topic. The 2
groups will relay the correct arrangement of
letters in each scrambled words.
Mechanics:
1. In this activity the class are divided into
2 groups and will take 3 minutes to
finish.
2. The groups will form a straight line and
the first person in front will answer what
is the correct arrangement of letter that
will be flash on the screen and the last
person will say the correct answer.
3. The group that will get the correct word
will have the point.
4. Each correct word is equivalent to 2
points.
5. Everyone is expected to participate in
doing this activity.
Is that clear class? Yes ma'am.

Correct answers:
1. Petrology
2. Igneous
3. Sedimentary
4. Metamorphic
5. Minerals

Okay, so we are done with the activity.

Now, let us see if how many points did you
get.
Very good everyone. Thank you for your
active participation.
So, class based on the activity that you
have perform, what do you think is our
topic for today? Types of rocks, Ma’am.

Correct. Very good!

D. Developmental Activities
So, our topic for today is all about type of
rocks. Kindly read the objectives. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the
students will be able to:
 Identify the three types of rocks
 Classify rocks as to igneous,
sedimentary and metamorphic
rocks
 Appreciate the importance of
rocks in our daily life

Alright. Thank you.

E. Activity (8 minutes)
This time, we will have an activity called
"Rock It Baby" that will focus on our topic
for today's discussion. The students should
(The students will proceed to their
be able to identify and describe the three
respective groups)
basic rock types. The class will be grouped
into 2 groups.
Direction: Classify the following pictures of rocks
according to their structure. Identify whether it is
Igneous, Sedimentary or Metamorphic rock. Each (The students will read the rubrics)
group will be given pictures to identify what type
of rock is being shown. Each group will present a
little description of their output.

Possible Answers:
Igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks,
metamorphic rocks

Each group will start answering.

I will give you 1 minutes to answer the task and
present it in front. Yes, Ma’am.

(Presentation of the groups.)

Time is up. Are we all done?
Yes Ma’am.

Very good everyone. Let's give a 5 claps for 1,2,3,4,5 claps...

everybody.
F. Analysis
Alright. Now may I have a volunteer to I had find the activity a little bit difficult
share in class what he/she felt about the ma'am because I am not that familiar with
activity. Yes Mr. Nautan? the type of rocks but it is very fantastic and
enjoyable.

Okay. Thank you for that Mr. Nautan.

What are your struggles in performing the For me, I don’t think I have struggled from
activity, anyone? Yes from Mr. Flores. the activity because it is easy to know what
type of rock is it and because I also have
knowledge about rocks.
Very good. Thank you.

G. Abstraction

So, now let us know more about rocks and its

types.

Presentation of the topic:

Petrology is the scientific study of rocks. Rocks
are combined aggregation of minerals. Petrologist
classified rocks based on how they were formed. (The students will listen to the discussion)
In general, rocks are classified as igneous,
sedimentary, and metamorphic rock. Earth is a
solid rock to a depth of 2,900 kilometers,
where mantle meets the liquid outer core. A
core is naturally occurring solid aggregate
of one or more minerals. The aggregate
minerals forming the rocks are held together by
chemical bonds. Grains can be different in
color, texture, and sizes. Geologist then group
rocks into three categories based on how the
rocks form: igneous, sedimentary, and
metamorphic rock.
Three types of Rocks
Igneous – formed from hardening and
crystallization of magma or molten material that
originates deep within the earth.
Two types of Igneous rock:
A. Extrusive/ Volcanic rock – forms when
magma makes its way to Earth’s surface as lava
and then cools. The crystals are very small (fine
grained) since the cooling process is fast.
B. Intrusive/ Plutonic – It cools slowly beneath
the Earth surface and are created by magma. The
intrusive Igneous rocks have very large crystals
(coarse grained). Igneous rocks are classified
based on
1. Composition
a. felsic– light in color; feldspar and silicates
b. Mafic – dark in color, made up of magnesium
and iron
c. Intermediate – between mafic and felsic
d. Ultramafic– very dark color
2. Texture – overall appearance of rock
a. Aphoristic – fine grained
b. Phaneritic – coarse grained
c. Porphyritic -large crystals with small crystals
d. Glassy – non-ordered solid from rapid
quenching
e. Pyroclastic – composite of ejected fragments

Sedimentary rocks provide information about

surface conditions that existed in the Earth’s past.
 Particles of sand, shells, pebbles, and
other fragments of materials called
sediments, accumulate in layers and over
long period of time harden into rocks.
 Compaction – due to increase of pressure
of layered sediments it binds together to
form the sedimentary rocks.
Three types of sedimentary rocks
a) Clastic sedimentary rock – formed from
accumulation of clasts: little pieces of broken
rocks and shells.
Examples: conglomerate, breccia, sandstone,
shale.
b) Chemical sedimentary rocks - formed when
dissolved minerals precipitate from a solution.

c.) Organic – rocks formed from the accumulation

of animal debris
Example: Coal – composed of organic matter in
the form of plants fragments.
Metamorphic – forms from pre-existing rocks:
either metamorphic, igneous, sedimentary
Metamorphism – transformation of one rock type
into another.
Two Types of Metamorphism
1. Regional – die to changes in pressure and
temperature over large region of the crust
2. Contact – mainly by heat due to contact with
magma
Classification
a) Texture – refers to the size arrangement and
grains within the rock.
b) Foliation – any planar arrangement of mineral
grains or structural features within the rock

So how does rocks change from one type to

another?
Now, I will show a picture of the rock cycle and
how it changes from one type to another.

“All rocks change, but these changes are usually

slow. Below-surface changes occur. Changes
occur above ground. This is part of the rock cycle.
The rock cycle outlines the formation and
evolution of the major rock types. The three
primary rock kinds are related in the figure above.
The arrows inside the circle indicate how one rock
type can turn into another. For example, igneous
rock can decompose into sedimentary rock.
Igneous rock can metamorphose underground.
Igneous rock can also re-melt and re-cool into
molten rock.”

(End of discussion)

Do you have any question class?

Okay so if no one has a question then I bet you all

know and understand the discussion. Then I will
be the one to ask you. None ma'am.
Can you described how rock changes from one
form to another?

(Students will state their new ideas and

concept about the topic discussed by the
teacher.)
Conclusion:
 Rocks are continually changing from
one type to another and back again.
As forces inside the earth bring
them closer to the surface (where
they are weathered, eroded, and
compacted) and forces on the earth
sink them back down (where they
are heated, pressed, and melted)
 Igneous rocks form when molten
rock (magma or lava) cools and
solidifies.
 Sedimentary rocks originate when
particles settle put of water or air, or
by precipitation of minerals from
water
 Metamorphic rocks result when
existing rocks are changed by heat,
pressure, or reactive fluids, such as
hot, mineral-laden water.

H. Application (5 minutes)
We will have groupings activity and your
group earlier as well as the rubrics will be the
same. All of the 2 group will answer the activity “2
Pics One Word” in which a name of rock will be
formed if you can combine both pictures that will
be shown. Each group will write their answers in a None ma'am.
paper that will be provided to them.
Any questions?
Yes ma'am.
Okay, proceed to your groups and start
answering the activity.

Okay, now let us check if you got the

answers correct.
1,2,3,4,5 claps...

Very good class. All of you got perfect

score. You really are amazing and actively
participative. Let's give everyone 5 claps.
