IV. Procedure

TEACHER ACTIVITY STUDENT ACTIVITY

a. Greetings
Good morning, Grade 10 students. Good morning, ma’am.
Before we start, let us pray first. Who wants to
volunteer to lead our prayer?

Yes Allen, please do the honor. (Student leads the prayer)

Thank you for leading our prayer.

Kindly pick up the pieces of paper around you,

arrange your chairs properly, and you may now
take your seats.

b. Checking of Attendance
Let us check our attendance for today.
Is there any absent in the class? None, ma’am.
Very good, class. Everyone is present today.

Reviewing the previous lesson

(ELICIT – 5 minutes)

Before we begin our discussion this morning, let’s have a We discussed about the Central Nervous
recapitulation of our previous lesson. Class, what topic did we System and its components.
take up last meeting?

What are the components of Central Nervous System? Brain and spinal cord.

How about the main parts of the brain? Cerebrum, cerebellum, and brain stem.

What is the function of spinal cord? Spinal cord serves as a channel for signals
between the brain and the rest of the body,
Very good. and controls simple musculoskeletal
reflexes without input from the brain.

Do you have any question regarding our past lesson? I appreciate None, Ma’am.
that you thoroughly understand.

Establishing a purpose (motivation)

(ENGAGE – 10 minutes)

Before we proceed, kindly read aloud our objectives.

At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to:
a). identify the main divisions of the peripheral nervous
system;
b.) explain the differences of somatic and autonomic
nervous system;
c.) appreciate the importance of the peripheral nervous
system in our body.

Now, I have pictures here with its name in a jumbled letters. You
have to arrange the letters to discover the word. Raise your hand
if you want to answer. Are you ready? Yes, Ma’am.

Activity 1 – I Discovered It!

Very good class, give yourself a round of applause. (Students clap their hands)

We will find out later if your answers are correct.

Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills

(EXPLORE – 10 minutes)

After you know the central nervous system, let us know the other
major division of nervous system. I will present a video.
Understand it and I will ask some questions later.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jaWYChc5A

What have you understood after watching the video? (Students will answer)

Very good, you listened carefully. The peripheral nervous system

connects the central nervous system to the organs and limbs. Our
body sends signal to our brain through spinal nerves and cranial
nerves.

What neuron is responsible for detecting sensations such as pain Sensory neuron.
and heat?

How about the neuron that is responsible for transmitting Motor neuron.
messages away from the central nervous system?

Very good. For further understanding, let us have another (Students will perform the activity)
activity. I will group you into four groups. Answer the activity
based on what you have remembered on the video that I have
presented to you earlier.

Activity 2 – Where Am I?
Directions: Study the given words. Write the words to its
corresponding column.
Somatic Nervous System Autonomic Nervous System Somatic Nervous Autonomic Nervous

Feeling of heat Normal breathing
Digestion

Okay, time is up. Let us check your group works.

How can you identify what action or situation belong to the

somatic or autonomic nervous system?

Very good. Give yourself a fireworks clap. (Students do the fireworks clap)

Developing mastery leads to assessment

(EXPLAIN – 15 minute)

Who can recall the last organ under the central nervous system
that connects the brain and the rest of the body? Spinal cord, Ma’am.

All right. Now let us further discuss the peripheral nervous

system. We have discussed that peripheral nervous system is
connected with the central nervous system. To be able to
function, spinal cord will deliver the message throughout the
lower body to perform its response.

Peripheral Nervous System has two main divisions:

a. Somatic Nervous System – this system is associated with
the voluntary control of body movements and has two
main parts:
 Spinal nerves – the nerves that carry motor and
sensory signals between the spinal cord and the
body.
 Cranial nerves – the nerve fibers that carry
information into and out of the brain stem.
Examples of voluntary movements are walking, swallowing,
control breathing, and feeling of heat.

Two Types of Neuron

1. Sensory neuron – transmit messages toward the central
nervous system.
2. Motor neuron – transmit messages away from the central
nervous system.

b. Autonomic Nervous System – this system is associated

with the involuntary control of body movements and has
two subdivisions:
 Sympathetic – it is activated when the body is in a
dynamic role or stress (e.g., increased heart rate
and breathing, dilation of pupil, sweating, etc.)
 Parasympathetic – it maintains body functions
and restores the body to normal or relaxed mode.
Examples of involuntary movements are heartbeat, blinking,
sweating, normal breathing, and digestion.

Finding practical applications of concepts and skills in daily living

(ELABORATE - 10 minutes)

Let us have a quick generalization of what we have discussed.

Again, what are the two main divisions of the peripheral nervous Somatic and automatic nervous system.
system?

What are the two main parts of the somatic nervous system? Spinal nerves and cranial nerves.

How about the autonomic nervous system? Sympathetic and parasympathetic.

Very well answer.

Now, what is the importance of the peripheral nervous system in It sends information from different areas of
our body? Yes, Jose? our body back to the brain, as well as
carrying out commands from your brain to
various parts of your body.

Excellent. Any answer? Yes, Adriane? It guides everyday activities such as waking
up, breathing, thinking, remembering, and
feeling emotions.

Correct. Your words are pleasant to my ears. Is there any None, Ma’am.
question about our lesson today? If none, I guess you’re all ready
for evaluation.

Evaluating Learning- By pair quiz

(EVALUATE- 10 minutes)

Let’s evaluate your learning.

Directions: In one-half sheet of paper, fill in the blank by writing

the correct missing word.
Answer Key
1. The peripheral nervous system connects the central 1. limbs
nervous system to the organs and _______. 2-3. sympathetic, parasympathetic
2-3. The two subdivisions of autonomic nervous system are 4. away
_______ and _______. 5. involuntary
4. Motor neurons transmit messages _____ from the 6. motor
central nervous system. 7. various answer
5. Waking up is an example of ________ movement. 8. parasympathetic
6. ______ nerves are nerve fibers that carry information 9-10. Alyssa
into and out of the brain stem.

9-10. Write the first name of your current Science teacher.
Correct spelling will get two points.

Additional activities (homework)

(EXTEND – 5 minutes)

For your assignment, research other human habits or human

activities. Identify whether it is under the somatic or autonomic
nervous system. Write it in one-half sheet of paper.

That’s all for today, I hope you have learned a lot from our lesson.
Good bye, class. Goodbye Ma’am. See you next meeting.
a. REMARK
