Essential Idea

Congratulations upon participating in the activities! Since, the listening activity has
helped you to have knowledge about the 5 elements; surely, you are ready to learn
more about the elements of a short story. Furthermore, developing a solid
understanding of the elements of a story is essential for you to follow and fully
comprehend the stories you read. However, before you can understand how these
elements contribute to a story’s overall meaning and effect, you must first be able to
identify the component parts confidently. Make sure to read the abstraction below.

Explore phase

Abstraction

There are many reasons students need to be well-versed in identifying the

elements of a story, not least of which is the deeper levels of comprehension and
enhanced appreciation this brings. Understanding how a story is organized is
necessary for students to access the highest levels of comprehension of that story.
Understanding how a story is organized also provides students with a frame of
reference that significantly assists with recall. Often necessary, especially where
exams are concerned, the implications here for subjects outside the English
classroom are apparent too.

These are the five key elements of a story

Character: Depending on the nature of the story, characters are most often people
or animals. Writers use characters to perform the actions and speak the dialogue of
a story. They move a story’s plot forward. They are the who of a story.
Setting: A story’s setting refers not only to the physical location but also to the time
the action takes place. It is the where and the when of a story.

Plot: The plot relates to the events that happen in a story. The plot can be further
divided into sub-elements such as introduction, rising action, climax, falling action,
and resolution. It is the what of the story. The plot usually begins with a problem and
ends in the story’s resolution.

Conflict: Every story worth its salt requires conflict. This conflict can be thought of
as a challenge or problem that drives the story’s action. No conflict, no story. Setting
up a series of cause and effect events, conflict gives these events their why.

Theme: a little more abstract than the previous elements, the theme refers to the
underlying insight, moral or idea that the writer is expressing through the story. It is
often thought of as the ‘message’ of the story.

Being familiar with the various elements that combine together in good
storytelling also helps students in their own writing. It helps students to organize their
thoughts and competently weave together the various threads of their own stories.
No small feat for an experienced writer let alone a novice!

WHAT’S MORE?

TRIVIA

A short story is a work of prose fiction that can be read in one sitting—usually
between 20 minutes to an hour. There is no maximum length, but the average short
story is 1,000 to 7,500 words, with some outliers reaching 10,000 or 15,000 words.
At around 10 to 25 pages, that makes short stories much shorter than novels, with
only a few approaching novella length. A piece of fiction shorter than 1,000 words is
considered a “short short story” or “flash fiction,” and anything less than 300 words is
rightfully called “microfiction.”

Activity 2
Directions: Based on the activity 1, label the book cover based on its
title, subtitle, author, and etc.

Essential Idea

To solidify your understanding and skills of the topic, you have been given activities
wherein you get to answer questions and label a book cover. This is to assess and
make you more armored to get into the deeper parts of writing a bibliography. By
that, you are ready to learn more about what it takes in writing and knowing the
importance of bibliography,

Abstraction

In the previous part of the module, you have seen an illustration of a cover page
of a book and its parts. Do you think it is important to take note of these information
and cite them in your research?

When you do your research, you need to cite or list your sources. Whenever
you take specific facts, ideas, or quotations from a book, magazine, newspaper, or
other sources, you make sure to cite the source.

Here are some important reasons why you need to cite or list the sources:

 It gives credit to the authors.

 It provides you and the reader with more information about the sources.
 It shows the writer’s credibility, referring to whether his/her sources are reliable.
 It prevents plagiarism, an act of stealing someone else’s ideas and presenting
them as your own.

Look at the sample text inside the box. How many sources do you see? One
way of citing your sources is through listing them on a separate page of your
research paper. This
page is what we call a bibliography

What is a Bibliography?

A bibliography is taken from the Greek word ‘biblion’ which means ‘book’ and
‘graphia’ which means ‘to write.’ A bibliography contains an alphabetical list of
sources like books, periodicals, and websites used by the writer or researcher.

A research paper should contain a bibliography written on a separate page and

should be located at the end of the paper. Each entry uses a hanging indention, also
known as a second line indention.

There are many styles or formats in citing or listing sources, depending on the
subject.
The three main citation styles are the following:

The American Psychological Association (APA) Style which is used in social and
behavioral sciences.

The Modern Language Association (MLA) Style which is used for writing papers on
literature and related subjects like theater or film.

The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) which is often used in many academic fields,
especially in the humanities and social sciences.

In this module, we will follow the bibliography annotation standard specified in

Chicago
Manual of Styles 17th Edition.

<printed materials will be provided>
