Lesson Idea Name: The Water Cycle

Grade Level/Content Area: Understanding the water cycle
Content Standard Addressed: S4E3. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to demonstrate the
water cycle.
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and be
Empowered Learner – 1.1.a. Students articulate and able to do by the end of this lesson: I would like
set personal learning goals, develop strategies for my students to understand the water cycle,
leveraging technology to achieve them and reflect on and be able to demonstrate the different stages.
the learning process itself to improve learning
outcomes.
What is the student learning goal(s) for this lesson idea? The goal for this lesson is for students to
use 2.0 tools to learn and understand the water cycle.
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
Remembering Understanding X Applying Analyzing Evaluating Creating
How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

X Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the
student and mostly practice based.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic
of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The
teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based (Real world problems) and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems
and completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared
outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the
school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another
class, or publishing it via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation: As you address the standards, what will students and teachers do?
How will you keep students engaged and focused on their learning goal(s)? How will you access
students’ prior knowledge as they start their learning? How will you provide authentic real-world
tasks to motivate your learners? How will student learning be assessed? How will you conclude the
lesson? (Consider how your Web 2.0 will be used by students and how you will assess learning)
For this lesson my Google slide will be presented on the projector. The first slide presents a question
asking what the students know already about the water cycle. This is a great time to ask volunteers
about what they know. Moving along the presentation, the second slide is a YouTube video showing
how the water cycle works and key element students should know. The next slide is a diagram of the
water cycle and the definition, following that is an empty diagram that volunteers can be chosen to
fill out. At this point in the lesson, I will ask for students to pull out their device, I would allow them
to share their thoughts on padlet and ask them to respond to peers. To conclude this lesson, I
created a booklet over the material. After they have finished responding to peers on Padlet they can
play the booklet trivia game to test their knowledge.

Managing student learning:

This lesson should take no longer than an hour, allowing 15 minutes per slide so we can discuss in
more depth. The student’s goal is to understand the water cycle and then be able to demonstrate by
playing the game at the end. The assessment in the lesson allows me to check their knowledge.
When the students are on their device, I will closely monitor to make sure they are on task. This
lesson also calls for multiple volunteers allowing students to speak. If the have questions, ask 3 and
then me.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Students really get to engage in this lesson. These tools allow for students to not only learn the
material but get to interact and truly understand the subject. These tools also allow for the teacher
to track their progress.
Reflective Practice: I think this lesson will benefit students because they get to enjoy learning the
material. It is a creative and collaborative lesson that I think all students would enjoy. Being able to
track my future students’ progress is very important to me. These interactive tools make it easy and
fun for students and myself.
