Lesson Idea Name: Different Life Cycles

Grade Level/Content Area: 2nd.

Content Standard Addressed: • Standard: S2L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate

information about the life cycles of different living organisms. a. Ask questions to determine the
sequence of the life cycle of common animals in your area: a mammal such as a cat, dog or
classroom pet, a bird such as a chicken, an amphibian such as a frog, and an insect such as a
butterfly.

What is the student learning goal(s) for this lesson idea?
To learn that different living organisms have different life cycles through asking questions.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the
student and mostly practice based.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic
of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The
teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based (Real world problems) and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems
and completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared
outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the
school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another
class, or publishing it via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation:

I want to lead students in a discussion-based learning that gets them thinking. I would give a series
of open-ended questions that students answer. Then we would watch videos about the topic. At the
end of videos, I would keep the students engaged by making a venn diagram about the differences
and similarities between two life cycles. After venn diagram I would give my students a Kahoot to
see how much information they retain and if the lesson was successful. At the end of lesson, the

students and I would recap everything they learned.

Managing student learning:

By letting my students partake in multiply discussion and comparing life cycles with a venn diagram I
move them from passive to active social learners. They are able to talk with their peers about the
subject and hear other classmates’ opinions and thought process.
For each discussion I will set a time limit and some ground rules. Things like making sure we stay on
topic and what we share pertain to what we are learning. I would call on whoever is raising their
hand. I would make sure all students had a chance to go before I call on same student.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

For representation I have provided a song, videos, venn diagrams, Kahoot’s and more to gave my
students a variety of ways to learn about life cycles. For engagement I have given my student the
opportunity to participate in class discussions to talk with their peers and as a whole. For action and
expression I allow my students to partake in multiple kahoots and venn diagrams to show what they
have learned throughout the lesson

Reflective Practice:

I believe this tool will help students build an understanding of life cycles that traditional tools could
not. The YouTube videos give my students a chance to see certain life cycles they can't within their
own area. For an example some students may be able to see a chicken’s life cycle but other students
may not. A YouTube video allows all the students to be able to see what a chickens life cycle is. The
tool that I look forward to implementing the most is the YouTube videos on different life cycles.
Because it gives my students a chance to see different life cycles and to experience them.
