“Anna, kindly go to the public market and buy 1
kilogram of Vegetables for lunch.”
said Anna’s mother and directly gave to her the
money to use as a payment for the Vegetables.
“Okay Mama.” Anna responded excitedly and
hurriedly leave to go to the market. When she
arrived at the public market, she remembered that
she forgot to asked her mother if what vegetable
she need to buy since her mother did not specify
what vegetable to buy.
She suddenly scratched her head.
“It’s too late, I’m already at the market.” Anna said
to herself. She then decided to buy 1 kilogram of
squash since they usually like to cook squash as
viand aside from string beans and okra. When she
went home, she apologize to her mother.
“Mama, I’m so sorry that I forgot to ask you what
vegetable I should buy. I just decided to buy a
squash because we always have squash more
often compared to other vegetables.”
Anna’s mother just smiled at her.
“It’s okay Anna. I think it’s also my fault. I also

How do General and Specific Statements look like?

Let us study this diagram.
(The teacher will show a diagram with a phrase
‘SCHOOL SUPPLIES’ at the top and below are the
pictures of specific school supplies namely: stapler,
pencil, notebook and ballpen.)

Inside the box is the phrase ‘SCHOOL SUPPLIES’

that refers to the broad idea, type, and grouping of
words. This is the general idea presented in the
diagram. Below the box are the examples of school
supplies: stapler, pencil, notebooks, and pen.
These examples are called specific ideas because
they support and define the general idea (school
supplies) as a whole.
Statements are also classified as general or
specific.
Let us study these examples.
1. The house has designs of different shapes.
2. Shella’s house has designs of circle, triangle, and
rectangle.
Sentence number 1 expresses a broad idea as it
uses the words ‘house’ and ‘shapes. Thus, this is
called a general statement.
General statement usually combines or
summarizes on a number of related ideas into a
bigger if not the whole picture.
Sentence number 2 expresses the details or
particulars as it defines the ‘house’ as Shella’s
house and gives examples to ‘shapes’ like circle,
triangle, and rectangle. Thus, this is called a
specific statement.

Here are more examples. Note that the same color

words/phrases relate each other as general and
specific ideas in the statements.
General Statements Specific Statements
