Read articles about integrative method of teaching, and answer the following questions:
Learning through integration is a strategy that requires the learner to draw upon
their existing knowledge and experiences in order to better understand and appreciate
new information and experiences. Learners are able to draw on their prior knowledge and
apply it to new situations that are more difficult as a result of doing this. Integrative
learning is based on the idea that students should be responsible for their own education
and should strive to become critical thinkers who are able to draw meaningful
connections across various academic fields and apply their analytical skills to the solution
of real-world issues. According to the Association of American Colleges and Universities
(2007), the most important development in higher education for the 21st century will be
the implementation of integrated learning. Techniques known as integrative, secondary,
or synthesis methods include merging information or data obtained from a variety of
sources, including primary data research. These may vary from quantitative methods that
are organized, such as meta-analyses or systematic literature reviews, to qualitative
methods that are not structured, such as unstructured or informal literature reviews.
Additionally, it is the process of making connections among concepts and experiences so
that information and skills can be applied to novel and complex issues or challenges. And
furthermore, it provides students with the opportunity to teach and learn from each other
as they tackle real problems that are framed as disciplinary research questions. The
process is iterative and requires high levels of critical thinking and reflection from its
participants. Therefore, if you follow these procedures, you will have effectively
combined at least three different subjects into a single lesson, which will be of far more
use to the students than if you had just delivered content on the topic.
