Distinguish Text-Types According to Purpose and Features: Explanation

 define explanation text and its purpose and features;
 identify parts of explanation sequence in a passage;
 use simple present tense in writing explanation text;
 use sequential connectors such as first, then, next, finally; and
 use conjunctions of time (before, after, as, when, while, until, since) showing cause and effect.
Background Information for Learners:
Explanation is a type of text which tells processes relating to natural, social, scientific and cultural
phenomena. It is a non-fiction text that is used to describe how and why things happen. It includes sequence
of events (explaining how) and provides reasons for a process of phenomenon (explaining why). Purpose:
Explanatory text move beyond providing straightforward descriptions to look at things like causes and
reasons. Its purpose is to tell how and why things occur.
Language Features: When writing an explanatory text, you should:
 use the simple present tense;
 use words showing cause and effect; and
 use time conjunctions.
The Two Types of Explanation Text
1. Sequential -add body explanation natural and non-natural such as life cycles
2. Cause and Effect -explanation that links cause and effect in explaining how and why an event
occurred. For example: The eruption of volcanoes
Pre-test: Read the following questions carefully. Choose the letter of the correct answer that explains how and
