Images/Ideas Used to Influence Viewers: Stereotypes, Point of View, Propagandas

MELC with code: Determine images/ideas that are explicitly used to influence viewers: Stereotypes,
Point of View, Propaganda (EN5VC-lllg-7.1-7.2)
Background Information for Learners:

A stereotype is an over-generalized belief about a particular category of people. It is an expectation

that people might have about every person of a particular group. The type of expectation can vary; it can
be, for example, an expectation about the group's personality, preferences, or ability. Stereotypes are
generalized because one assumes that the stereotype is true for each individual person in the category.
While such generalizations may be useful when making quick decisions, they may be erroneous when
applied to particular individuals. Stereotypes lead to social categorization, which is one of the reasons for
prejudice attitudes, and may arise for a number of reasons.

Point of view is what the character or narrator telling the story can see. The author chooses “who” is
telling the story by determining the point of view. It is important because it helps the reader understand
character’s feelings and actions.

Propaganda is communication that is used primarily to influence an audience and further an agenda, which
may not be objective and may be presenting facts selectively to encourage a particular synthesis or
perception. It presents information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or
publicize a particular cause or point of view.
