Matter Homework
1. How do atoms, compounds, and elements differ?
Both compounds and elements contain atoms. Elements are made of one kind of atom,
while compounds are made of two or more kinds of atoms chemically bonded together.

2. Are all physical changes accompanied by chemical changes? Are all chemical changes
accompanied by physical changes? Explain.
Physical changes are not all accompanied by chemical changes. Chemical changes are all
accompanied by physical changes, such as changes in color and changes in odor.

3. What does it mean to say that a given compound always has the same composition?
A given compound is always bonded with the same atoms in the same arrangement;
therefore, their composition is always the same.

4. Describe how the process of filtration could be used to separate a mixture into its
components. Give an example.
A heterogeneous mixture containing a solid and a liquid is passed through a filter. The
solid gets stuck in the filter and the liquid passes through the filter into another container.
The liquid in the container is a homogeneous solution.
