matters and
materials
Physical properties

Physical properties: is a characteristic of a substance that does not involve a chemical change.

Physical properties can be observed or measured

You can tell that an orange is an orange by looking it at it without changing the orange’s identity (such as
melting or burning )
Physical properties

● Malleable :
able to be hammered or pressed
permanently out of shape without breaking
or cracking.
Physical properties

Ductile:
Able to drawn out into a thin wire
Boiling point vs Melting point

Temperature at which a liquid turns into a gas Temperature at which a substance melts as it
About 100c changes from a solid to a liquid.
About 0c
Chemical properties

Chemical properties: indicates

how a substance react with
something else.

Example: the iron react with

oxygen causes rusting
● Burning is chemical change

Physical vs Chemical change

Physical change Chemical change

A change in size, shape or state A change in physical and chemical

properties

No new substance is formed A new substance is formed

Physical or Chemical property?
Property Property

Blue colour Melting point

Density Reacts with water

Flammability ( burns) Hardness

Solubility Boiling point

Reacts with acid Luster 光泽

Conductivity Odor 气味

Sour taste Reacts with oxygen

Physical or Chemical change?
Property Property

Salt dissolves in water Milk sours

Silver tarnishes 失去光泽 Sugar dissolves in water

An apple is cut Wood rots 腐烂

Heat changes water to Pancakes cook

Iron rusts A tire is inflated 膨胀的

Alcohol evaporates Food is digested

Ice melts Paper towel absorbs water

Reversible vs Irreversible reaction

Reversible reaction Irreversible reaction

● When a reaction occurs both forward and ● When a reaction occurs only forward
backward direction. direction.

Eg: ice melting, when you put it back in Eg: cooking vegetables, combustion of wood
fridge, ice will freeze
