Republic Act 9003 and DENR Administrative Order 2001-34 govern waste management in the Philippines, defining ecological solid waste management and solid waste. Ecological solid waste management includes waste reduction, segregation, and environmentally-sound transportation, storage, processing, treatment and disposal. Solid waste refers to discarded household, commercial and institutional waste. Proper waste disposal through composting, segregation, recycling and following the three R's of reduce, reuse and recycle can help eliminate waste and maintain a cleaner environment.

What Law is concerned with Waste management?
The laws and regulations are: 1. Republic Act (RA) No. 9003 (“The Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000”); and 2. Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Administrative Order (DAO) No. 2001-34, which is the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of RA 9003.
What is ecological SWM?
It is the systematic management of solid waste which provides for: 1. Waste reduction at source; 2. Segregation at source for recovery of reusables, recyclables and compostable; 3. Segregated transportation, storage, transfer, processing, treatment and disposal of solid waste; and 4. All other waste management activities which do not harm the environment.
What is the definition of solid waste under RA 9003?
Solid waste refers to all discarded household waste, commercial
What is Waste? Waste doesn’t exist in nature. In nature, everything has a purpose. Waste was created by humans for short-term convenience and short-term profit. From that act wasting occurs, which results in long-term harmful consequences for both humans, nature, and the economy.
What is Waste Management
Waste management is the process of disposing, processing, recycling and refining waste materials.
What are the types of Wastes?
Types of Solid Wastes 1. Residual waste is non-hazardous industrial waste. It includes waste material (solid, liquid or gas) produced by industrial, mining and agricultural operations. It excludes certain coal mining wastes and wastes from normal farming activities. 2. Special Wastes or infectious Wastes are the most dangerous wastes. They include hazardous or toxic wastes. 3. Biodegradable materials are non- hazardous waste that can be decomposed or be degraded by living organisms, with the proper treatment it can be used for composting, animal feed, or converted into energy includes organic waste, e.g., kitchen waste, vegetables, fruits, flowers, leaves from the garden, and paper. Ways of proper ways disposal 4. Non-biodegradable materials any discarded item that cannot be broken down by living 1. Composting organisms, accumulates in the environment because it cannot return to its origins. It is a natural process in which plant and other organic wastes are broken down biologically to What ways can be done to eliminate waste? produce a nutrient-rich material.
Sources of Solid Waste 2. Waste Segregation
Residential, industrial, commercial, institutional, construction and demolition, municipal This is the process of dividing garbage and waste products in an effort to reduce, reuse and services, agriculture, process (manufacturing etc.) recycle materials. 3. Recycling Method to eliminate waste Recycling is processing used materials (waste) into new products to prevent waste of Proper Waste Disposal potentially useful materials. Proper means of waste disposal is crucial to public health and the environment. This helps maintain a cleaner environment and reduces the chances of spreading diseases. Proper waste Follow the three R’s disposal also reduces the probability of contamination of the soil and groundwater. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle – all help to cut down on the amount of waste we throw away. They conserve natural resources, landfill space and energy.
