Vanara Race (5e)
Vanara
Description
Usually hailing from dense, warm forests and lush jungles of the remote places around the
world, the Vanara are a smart, simian humanoid who rarely venture into the more civilized places in the
world. Often when they do they are not adventurers but simply curious. Frequently traveling for short
times with other races mainly as way to amuse themselves, a vanara is often seen as simply a prankster
and nuisance. However when they do decide to leave and live the life of an adventurer they are just as
committed as their more serious compatriots because they know that the fate of their home and their
clan are on the line. As for looks a vanara’s body is covered in a thin coat of soft fur. Their coats are
often chestnut, ivory, black, and even a golden color though other natural colors and hues can occur.
Vanara grow lengthy hair on their head just as other races, and all vanara go to great effort to wear
elaborate hairstyles for important social occasions. The hair on a vanara’s head matches the color of its
fur. Most vanaras have long, prehensile tails and all of them have hand-like feet capable of well-
articulated movements. A vanara stands slightly shorter and built more thin and light than a typical
human or even elf. While normally found in the jungle some worlds are rumored to have another type
that stalks the high mountains. It is unknown whether these are Vanara or simply young yeti...

Sub-races
Tree-walker: The most common type. This is the base Vanara. Stats are above.
Tree-stranger: Some vanara have spent a great deal of their lives among humans, elves and other more
civilized races and in their centers of learning instead of their traditional treetop homes as such these
vanaras are proficient in all intelligence based skills (arcana, history, nature and religion), you also
know one other language of your choice. This racial trait replaces the additional climb speed (climb
speed reduced from 30 ft to 15 ft).
White-cape: Hailing from the plains, the rare white-cape vanara clans have much more in common with
baboons than the monkeys that most vanaras resemble. Their stooping, hunched build puts enemies at
disadvantage when attempting any attack that would knock you prone (or gives advantage on the save,
how this works is up to DM discretion). These vanaras usually have a thick mane of hair on the head
and shoulders (called a “cape”) and shorter tails. Having grown up on the plains you have a movement
speed of 40 on the ground (doesn't affect climbing speed). This racial trait replaces prehensile tail.
Mountain-stalker: (optional) The exceptionally rare Mountain-stalker vanara are said to have been
driven from there jungle homes and into the mountains many generations ago. Called “the little yetis”
their fur is exceptionally thick giving them cold resistance and usually white in color although some
can be shades of brown or gray. Slightly more stout and having lost their tails completely, mountain-
stalkers know the mountains (follows the rules of the ranger class' favored terrain (mountains), if
ranger class is taken it stacks as an additional favored terrain). This racial trait replaces prehensile tail.
