2014 SkillsUSA-Nail Care Contest –UPDATE

CONTEST GUIDELINES
#3 Time Limits: 3-5 minutes for oral presentation, 1 hour for application of 5 sculptured nails, 1
hour for the application of 5 nails with Light Cured Gel application, 30 minutes for Nail Care
written examination, 45 minutes for application of red polish on right hand & nail art on the
left.
NOTE: Sanitation & Disinfection procedures will carry a 5 point penalty if not properly demonstrated
throughout the competition.

Guidelines and Changes to update the 2014 Maryland State SkillsUSA Nail Care
Competitions are the following:

 Contestants can use an orderless or fast setting acrylic.


 All five fingers of the model’s right hand are to be sculpted with acrylic using forms, no
tips, in a two-tone/French Manicure (pink & white) technique. Two or more colors of
acrylic must be used.
 Any tip accepted for the Light Cured Gel application.
 All five fingers of the model’s left hand are to have nail tips applied and overlaid with a
light cured gel.
 Models should NOT arrive to the contest with any kind of artificial enhancements
previously applied.
 Students need to bring enough towels for every service and table set up.
 Red polish may NOT be applied prior to arrival.
 Two coats of dark red crème Lacquer/Polish is to be applied to the model’s right hand.
 Nail Art is to be applied to the All five fingers of the model’s left hand. A specific theme
is to be carried through on all five fingers and in a written description.
 Contestants must have written and submitted a description of the theme they intend to
create at contest check in. Descriptions of themes should be typewritten, may be
decorated and must be contained in a plastic sleeve.
 Diagrams of the nail art you intend to create can be used, however, are limited to the
finished product and may not be step by step instructions.
 Once all judging is complete, props may be used to enhance art during the parade of
models. All nail art must be created using polish, nail lacquer and or paint ONLY!!
 Nail Art does NOT require a French base. Contestant may select any color polish for the
base of the design.
 No embellishments are allowed: rhinestones, dried flowers, glitter, etc.
 The National Nail Care Competition gives 90 minutes for Nail Art and Polish application.
We are reducing the time to 45 minutes due to time constraints.
 We have removed Pedicure due to time constraints.
 A 3-5 minute mock nail care consultation on the benefits of natural nail care. Props may
be used. The presentation should include the following: 1.) Recommended natural nail
care services; 2.) Results the client should expect; 3.) The home care products the client
would need to purchase and use to obtain these results.

The Nail Care Contest will be judging and scoring on the Light Cured Gel Application in
accordance to the 2013-2014 Technical Standards. To align the contest within industry
practice they will be going away from wraps and replacing it with light cured gels. While this is
an industry wide change it is also a major change within the Technical Standards and the
competencies.
General Rules
1. All contestants must bring a model for the competition.
2. Contestants are not permitted to touch their models before the competition begins or
between segments.
3. Conversation between contestant & model is limited. The only conversation allowed is if
the contestant needs to ask the model to reposition her hand or arm. Communication with
observers, judges and other contestants is prohibited during the contest. If you have a
question, raise your hand and a committee member will help you.
4. All segments of work must be completed in the specified time during competition. (i.e.,
during the light cured gel segment, no work may be completed or started on the
sculptured, nail art or polish application.)
5. No eating, drinking, smoking or gum chewing is allowed during the competition. Lunch
will be provided for contestant and model.
6. All contestants and models must be escorted to the bathroom by a Maryland SkillsUSA
Nail Care Contest Volunteer. Bathroom breaks will take place after judging segments.
7. Penalty points may be taken for the following:
a) Leaving competition area before completion of model (applies to both contestant
and model) without proper escort.
b) Unauthorized use of a product that is not allowed or that doesn’t appear in the
listing or use of any product that appears to have been altered.
8. Each Contestant must turn in a digital photo on a CD of the art they will be creating, a
written description of their nail art and a resume. All three items must be turned in by
9:00 am on Saturday.
