Lesson Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:
 Identify the unit used in measuring storage device capacity;
 Compare and contrast different types of storage devices capacity;
 Appreciate the importance of storage devices capacity.

Motivation (Activity #1) 10 minutes

1. Form a group of 7 members
2. The teacher will show a comparison of two (2) storage devices storage
capacity with equality and inequality symbols (<, >, =) through a powerpoint
slide with 10 seconds time duration;
3. Each members of the group will take turn to answer after the given 10
seconds;
4. The group with the highest score wins.

iii. Presenting examples/ instances of the new lesson 1 minute

 Guide Question: What is the storage capacity of a hard disk measured in?

iv. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills 20 minutes

 How is data stored in a computer system?
 Data in a digital computer system is represented in binary digits called bits or 0s
and 1s in a binary numerical system.
 All data and information (text, images, and video) are represented and stored as
a string of bits.
 Each character of the alphabet and the numbers is represented by a byte.
 A byte is a unit of information that is equal to 8 bits.
 Example: Letter A in the alphabet is represented by 00000001
The table below summarizes the storage capacity.

COMPUTER STORAGE CAPACITY USAGE

STORAGE NAME APPROXIMATE EXACT NUMBER OF BYTES
Kilobyte KB 1 thousand 103 1,024 210
Megabyte MB 1 million 106 1,048,576 220
Gigabyte GB 1 billion 109 1,073,741,824 230
Terabyte TB 1 trillion 1012 1,099,511,627,776 240

v. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills 5 minutes

Activity #2: Put these units of storage in the right order, from smallest to largest.
a. 500 GB
b. 550 MB
c. 2000 KB
d. 1000 GB
e. 19.3 KB
IV. ASSESSMENT
i. Developing Mastery
 Quiz:
1. How many bytes are in Kilobytes? (24, 124, 1024)
2. Which is bigger? (2000 KB, 1 MB, 1000 KB)
3. How many bits are in a byte? (2, 4, 8, 16)
4. Which of the following is the smallest unit of data that can be stored?
(Byte, Bit, Kilobyte, Megabyte)
5. The word ‘bit’ is made up from ‘Binary Digit’. True or False?

ii. Finding practical Applications of Concepts and Skills in Daily Living

 What have you learned from today’s lesson?
 What is the storage capacity of a hard disk measured in?

iii. Generalization:
 How did our lessons today help you as a CSS learner?

iv. Additional Activity

 Assignment: Name the other storage capacity measure above Terabyte and
determine their exact number of bytes.
