Classroom Technology:
Big Universe at home: username is last name.#, password is eagles2!, and the group
name is newalbany.
Moby Max. The username and password are the same and there should not be a
group name. If it asks for your school name, look for New Albany, OH and Primary
School
Our class code for online orders is RHD8M. All book orders are sent to our school and
then sent home with your child.
WIG Wednesdays:
Our goal as a team during November was to Listen to the Speaker. Many students
worked SUPER hard to achieve this goal. However, there were some students who
found this goal challenging. Unfortunately, we did not achieve our goal this month. We
only reached listening to the speaker 46% of the month. It seems unfair to the students
who worked to show respect this month however we discussed the importance of
being a classroom team/family. In order to achieve this goal, we ALL need to be
working together! Teamwork makes the DREAM work The students decided they
would like to take a break from achieving this goal and we will come back to it in
January. We will work on a new goal this December. Please send to school any WIGS
you may have and we will keep them at school so the kids can wear them during our
WIG Wednesdays
The letter explaining this fun exchange was sent home with your child this week. Please
send to school: 2 Post Cards with a stamp by December 8th. Do not fill out the post card,
we will be researching our state and writing letters in small groups before we send them
to 49 other states!
Current Learning:
Language Arts: In Writing, we are finishing our narrative pieces through the writing
process. We start Opinion Writing next week. (Easy activities to support Opinion writing
at home: Pose a Would you rather question and have your child write a paragraph
stating their opinion, and 3-5 reasons WHY they have that opinion).
We will start our Genre Study on Fables. We will learn about how they often have
animals as the main character, have a simple plot, personification, and a moral/lesson
to learn.
We are also reading some of Dan Yaccarinos books, since we have an author visit with
him in February. The school will be selling his books so he can sign them when he is here,
so check your childs take-home-folder for the book sale flyer. Our class is LOVING
reading his books and admiring his illustrations! Weve been taking a close look at the
Theme of his stories and what message, moral, and/or lesson he is trying to teach us.
Fundations: The students did really well on the Unit 6 test! It is super important that not
only they apply spelling rules on these tests, but also when they are writing stories and
READING! We have begun Unit 7. This unit is a three-week unit so it will be completed
after Winter Break. Unit 7 introduces the open syllable one vowel that is the last letter
in the syllable, so it has the long sound (no, go, flu, we). We will also combine open
syllables with closed or v-e syllables to make longer words (music, relate, humid,
remote). We will learn about the sounds of y (cry, baby) and that y can be used as a
suffix (chilly). Other suffixes with y include ly and ty (ninety, safely). We will work on
how we divide syllables with these three different syllable types to help us spell and
sound out our words. The trick words youll need to practice at home include: week 1
eight, large, change; week 2 city, every, family; week 3 night, carry, something.
Math: Weve already had a blast starting Unit 4! The focus of unit 4 is on measurement.
We will use inches, feet, and yards and talk about proportions. This week we used feet
and yards to measure, but in a fun way. We used teacher feet for our foot measure
tool and giant feet for our yard measure tool. We made estimates, then took our
footprints and measured things around the room. We will continue to measure the next
few weeks. After break, they will work on thinking in groups of 3s with some fun
snowmen activities that round out this unit, but will not be assessed on the post-test. Im
so happy about how excited the kids are about Math!
