st Grade is Hoppin Fir

Dear First Grade Families, This is a busy, but exciting time of the year! We have Christmas on our minds as the kids are finishing their final practices for the Christmas program next Tuesday. You are in for a special treat! We have already started reading books about Christmas, and made our first decoration for the room. They also enjoyed making the holiday crafts on Thursday. Thank you for your donations for this. You will love what they made! *That reminds me, many children are down to their final glue stick. (I have found that the Rose Art brand does not stick as well as the Elmers brand.) Could you please send a few more to school with your child in the next week or so. Thanks! Here are a few things we will be doing in December: We will be making mental images and talking about the connections we have to books we read in class. We will review the 5 short-vowel sounds and learn to change the short vowel sound to a long sound, when we see a magic e at the end of the word. We have new word work activities that help the kids to practice and to reinforce these concepts being taught. We will do sorts 2-3 times a week. The kids have to look and listen to the vowel sound and either match it to the correct picture, or put it under the correct heading. (And just because a word may have a certain vowel in it, does not mean it makes that sound, so they really need to listen to the sound the vowel is making.) The students will continue learning strategies for Accuracy : like flip the sound, blend the sounds, and cross-check strategy. We will also be learning a way to Retell a Story. (I will have the kids use specific vocabulary and steps that will help them.) Look for a bookmark that will be in your childs book baggie next week Monday, when the books go home. It has a lot of tips and questions you can ask your child to help them practice retelling a story. We will be making stories with beginnings, middles and ends, and remember to start our sentences with capital letters, spaces between words, and ending marks. We will also try to include more details in our stories. I will introduce using booklets to help with this. Also, if you see that your child is having difficulty with reversals, please have them correct their letters and numbers and make it correct. Thanks!

Its Boot Time:
Please have your child bring boots to school. If there is no snow, like this week, your child will not be required to wear them, but we need to be prepared. You do not have to pack extra shoes for the kids. They can wear their PE shoes in the classroom, which will give them more room in their backpacks. Also it is very windy on our playground and so I would recommend that your child have a hat and mittens each day from now until it warms up. You can also send an extra pair of mittens/socks so when they get really wet, they have a dry pair to put on.

Look what we are doing in math!

We just took a math test for unit 3 and the students needed to: know sums of 10; count forward by 5s; count backward by 1s; solve simple frame and arrow problems; know the value of the penny, nickel, and dime; and calculate the value of a combination of coins. In unit 4 the students will: read the thermometer to the nearest two degrees; measure and compare lengths using nonstandard units, the standard foot, and the inch; practice using a tape measure; and tell time to the quarterhour. (This is very difficult so do not worry if your child does not have a great understanding of it even after it is taught.) They will also be introduced to the number scroll; turn around facts; and practice fact power. The students will be given timed tests for addition problems. The kids will get 2 minutes to complete 30 problems. We will work our way up to this. It will not happen over night, but practice does help, so we will be playing games in the room to learn them better. Please note: I am fine with the children using their fingers to help them with problems; especially at this time of the year.
