Description
Welcome everyone to the session
Tell this story or other one similar:
I was in the grocery store the other evening with my three kids, who have
reached the age where they can help with shopping. We were in a bit of a
rush, so we were working as a team to get the groceries checked off the
list and into the cart. All 3 kids were working their way through the store
to get specific items. At one point, I left my oldest at the delicatessen
counter and instructed him to get sandwich pepperoni for the calzones I
intended to make that night. He showed up with sliced turkey.
Unfortunately, turkey calzones are not as tasty as pepperoni ones, so we
had to go back, which slowed us down. (p.111)
Handouts
Assessments
Errors like this one can slow down group and team performance. Ask: Can
you think of other examples where miscommunication can slow down
your work?

C. The noises are all the factors, interpersonal ones or those that are
caused by the medium that cause a message to be miscommunicated.
D. The message is the information contained within the communication
process.
Note: Make sure to let the group know that communication is reciprocal
and situational
When we communicate, we have to pay attention to 2 things: words and
the non-verbal message being sent
Ask: which percentage is verbal and which percentage is non-verbal
communication?
Show results - congratulate the group
Lets take a look at this topic a bit more in detail
Read the sentence as shown on the slide: 1st time- no main emphasisThat was a really great consultant who taught our class about how to
improve communication skills today. 2nd time-emphasis in the e last part
of the sentence.
Ask learners to describe what is the difference among the 2 sentences you
just read.
Explain the connotative meaning in the second reading of the sentence.
Describe the difference between connotative and denotative.
A. The denotative message is representative of the specific facts involved
in any communication message. It is usually the most obvious meaning
created by the words, or semantics, of the message.
B. The connotative message represents not only the words and
semantics, but also the emotional. It can lead to different interpretations
of the same communication.
Now, lets talk about the other 93% of our communication: the non-verbal
message
There are many ways to share a message through non-verbal
communication.
Our facial expressions, tone of voice, the way we position our bodies, the
movement of our eyes, where we stand in comparison to the other
person, even with the way we shake someone's hand.
Ask: Can you tell me what non-verbal technique this characters are using
on this clip? What are they saying?

While we are communicating, there are several barriers that we should try
to avoid
Ask: Can you give me an example of someone. (select 3 barriers, and ask
the group to give you examples)
If you need to explain some of those barriers: (describe them)
Another barrier we can find while we are communicating as a team is the
type of network we use. In other words, the way we sit or stand as a

Conclusion
When you take a look at this picture. Ask: Which one do you think allows
everyone in the team to be able to participate in the conversation openly,
everyone can hear and see you, and you can get feedback right away?
Answer: open network
Ask: When we have a leader making a decision, but the team will give their
input, which one would you suggest using? Answer: (wheel)
Can you give me more examples when you see yourself using any of these
networks?
Poor Listening skills
These habits will not help us to be better team players. Ask: How can we
change them?
Add examples

One of the skills that we all need to work on to improve our
communication skills is the art of active listening.
Explain procedure
Ask: Can you give me examples when you used these skills, or when you
should have used them?
We have reviewed and learned several skills for communicating. What
type of actions can we take right now to get more comfortable with our
teams and start using better communication techniques?
