About this ebook

Neil sets out to find more information on his mysteriously missing mentor and ends up with more questions instead. When he winds up on the Baronsworths’ doorstep (again!), they share an important bit of news on the Cunninghams.

There’s something bigger lurking behind the scenes and Neil isn’t sure how much of that he wants to unravel. Especially with the troublesome new face at work. Greyson is hard to read and his questions are even harder to answer.

Should he even try?

Or will his answers cause more complications?

To my faithful readers who requested my ‘rambling fic tags’. This is for you. I hearby tag Episode 9 as:

Soft Space Academy AU. Found family. Slow-burn. Eventual Friends, then Friends to Lovers. Neil’s getting smothered by all these parental vibes. Is this what love feels like? Neil is a trouble magnet.

1 The Problem With Instincts - Neil

Leaving Dexter and Terius behind in the classroom did Neil no favors at all as he scurried down the Academy hallways. His mind was a jumble of confused information that refused to sort itself out without some sort of outside input.

The silver-and-white tinted walls blurred past, everything melding together in a familiar pattern. He'd grown up in Noir Academy. It was practically home. The clean, tempered floors and the faintly glowing panels embedded in the hallway walls, casting a soft glow along his path.

Attending his classes hadn't actually helped. He was fairly certain he'd have to re-listen to the lectures again before the midterm and possibly add in a few more study sessions with Elyenka, if she could spare the time for it.

The last class had been a self-study period and he'd immediately asked the teaching assistant to be excused. It was easier to study quietly on his own in the library or his own room, instead of trying to drown out the quiet mumbles of his fellow students.

Less stress and no need to worry if he accidentally had scales surfacing from under his skin or a sudden need to face-plant into his pillow and sleep as hard as he could. He'd fought off a heavy wave of exhaustion after leaving Headmaster Grond's office.

Nothing he'd learned there had helped at all. Well, he had more information than when he'd started—but there was still the whole issue of what to do with the information.

Neil stifled a groan, rubbing his face at the memory. All of the sleeping and so-tired-he-was-dragging-his-feet-around was really starting to bother him. It was almost as if he was sleeping his life away and that thought hurt. He'd put so much time and effort into trying to earn his education and not lose himself in the process.

The end was near and yet, he was still struggling.

Maybe even worse than when he'd started. The only noticeable differences was that he had Kendall and Elyenka added into his life.

And now an apparently mysteriously missing mentors.

That's two now, isn't it? he mused. Missing dragel mentor. Missing academic advisor. What are the odds, it's the same person?

A grimace settled on his face. He really shouldn't tempt fate or whatever it was that liked to meddle in his life. That kind
