About the Author
1 An Unwanted Development - Neil
Too soon, Neil left the Nortons' to their visiting and exploring while he reluctantly turned towards the shipping docks. A notice had come through his personal Comm. an alert that he was required to report to work at least a half-hour before his official start time.
Something about important information and employee unity. Neil had scowled at it, but recognized the fancy wording as corporate-speak for mandatory meeting.
Responsibility called and as much as he didn't want to answer, there were requirements for his scholarship status.
Not to mention Jamal's unexpected visit that still lingered in his mind hours later. It'd left lots of unanswered questions and stirred up his long dormant curiosity. While he'd tried not to get too involved in his coworker's lives, somehow, he'd still managed to make enough of a lasting impression.
The most worrisome detail was that Jamal had come to him. Not to any of the others on their shift or ground crew, but to him. He could've sworn that Jamal was closer to some of the others, the kid with the spiky green hair for one—Manny? Matty? He couldn't even remember their names...
He was a terrible coworker! Really.
An uneasy feeling stole into his bones and settled there for the long haul. As if he could sense his own impending doom simply from the grim atmosphere that seemed to materialize as he wound his way through the academy station and towards the lower sections with the loading docks.
Neil was halfway down the last hallway when two of the early-shift workers approached, both grim-faced. They'd whispered between each other before Neil was halfway down the corridor, at which point, the whispering had stopped.
He'd intended to pass right by, staring straight ahead, when they reached out.
Hewitt?
the shorter one spoke up, jerking his companion to a stop. You're early. What are you doing here? Didn't think you show unless they made you come.
Neil glanced over one shoulder, checking to be sure they were talking to him. But of course they were. That was his name, after all. I-I'm not scheduled until later,
he said, carefully. Couldn't make it in before, was sick as a-
Jamal's already gone. There's nothing you can do.
...do?
Neil finally looked at them, his full attention redirected, latching onto the single keyword he knew. I mean—I know it's a family emergency, but-
The two exchanged a look. The shorter one sighed. "You don't have any idea what's going on, do you? If you'd get your head out of your own pathetic little story, you'd find
