Urban Images

This research provides an experimental project for the urban image of Napoli, in order to enhance its knowledge. Artists, who have painted it over time, have shaped a visual memory of its changes that is reinterpreted through a contemporary communicative key. The points of view, taken by the painters in various pictorial views, are identified and placed in a geocoded map, and then be connected to an augmented reality app, developing an implementable and interactive narrative about the 'imago urbis'.

This article is based on an ethnographic research on Bartın, a small city on the West Black Sea coast. In the article, how a century of economic development of a little port town and its conditions prior to 1980 influence the local collective memory of Bartın is investigated. As has been pointed out in the studies on collective memory, questions such as what is memorable, or which historical images are remembered and registered can be answered with reference to actors' ages, classes and/or occupations. In this research, we found that different approaches about what is memorable or meaningful are based on social stratification, on the one hand and the city's production and transformation process, that is to say, economic-historical factors on the other. In the research, narratives of 19 Bartınese were collected and interpreted in the context of the construction of the urban identity and the urban self-image.

Bu makale Batı Karadeniz kıyısında küçük bir kent olan Bartın'a ilişkin bir etnografik araştırmaya dayanmaktadır ve küçük bir liman kasabasının XIX. yüzyıldan XX. yüzyılın ortalarına kadar süren yaklaşık yüz yıllık ekonomik gelişiminin, 1980'lerden sonra küresel ölçekte değişen ekonomi-politik-teknolojik koşulların etkisi altında yerel düzeyde de üretim ilişkileri, üretim tarzı ve üretim araçlarının dönüşme sürecinin günümüzde kentte yaşayanların anlatılarına nasıl yansıtıldığı hakkındadır. Resmi ve gayri resmi konumları işgal eden yerel aydınların Bartın'ın il olduğu 1991'den sonra giderek artan kent kimliği inşası olarak tanımlanabilecek entelektüel girişim ve çabaları kentin tarihi üzerine odaklanır ve ortak bir tarih ve kent imgesi oluşturmaya çalışılırken nelerin hatırlamaya değer olduğu, geçmişin hangi imgelerle hatırlandığı farklı mesleklerden, sınıflardan ve yaşlardan kentlilerin anlatımlarında bir ideolojik çeşitlilik oluşturmaktadır. Görüşmelerde ortaya çıkan, hatırlanmaya değer ve/veya anlamlı olana dair farklı yaklaşımlar, bir yandan sınıfsal ve eş zamanlı öte yandan kentin üretim ilişkileri ve tarzının dönüşümünü yansıtan, yani tarihsel/paradigmatik farklılaşmayı ortaya koymaktadır. Araştırmada, 19 Bartınlının tarihsel anlatıları bir araya getirildi ve kentsel imgelerin oluşturulması ve kimlik inşası bağlamında yorumlandı. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between the image of Antalya City and destination marketing in sports organizations and satisfaction. In accordance with of this aim, the study group consists of 430 participants (n manager=4, n trainers=43, n athletes =315 and n referee=68) participating in Turkey Interuniversity Wushu Sanda and Taolu Championship between the dates of May 9 - 11, 2016, and the First International Mediterranean Wushu Championship between the dates of March 16 -21, 2017, held in Antalya city. In the study, it was revealed that the sub-dimensions of the perceived urban image significantly affect the destination marketing sub-dimensions and overall organization satisfaction in sports organizations. With this study, it is considered that perceived urban image can be a resource for forming a resource in the identification of the influences it exerts on destination marketing for sports organizations and organizational satisfaction, and sustainable plans formed in the stage of organizing this kind of activities.

Cities have become important actors on the global scene. Metropolitan governments are ‘glocal’ players sharpening their global influence strategy and improving the management of their brand. International city branding has its undeniable challenges, however. One of them is the fact that cities must utilize their collective symbolic capital—the resources and influence afforded to them through a perceived value—in an increasingly decentralized, fluid, and media-shaped environment. This implies weak control over ones’ brand. In this paper I take a closer look at how branding can benefit local economic development and how to cope with the many factors that wrest control of the brand from its masters.

In this article an analysis is made of mid-size city imagery throughout the long twentieth century in the Western Balkans, a region of radical change. In this region the production of urban images is an especially important activity in the process of cultural transformation. The focus is on the case study of Bitola, also known as Monastir, part of the present-day Republic of Macedonia. By looking at locally created motion pictures, three different periods are investigated – yet mostly concentrating on the contemporary context. Two notions help to understand the agency of mid-size city imagery and discourses: first the ‘relational positioning’ towards other cities and settlements, and second the ‘reductionist exclusion’ of different imageries existing within the city itself. Finally, the author argues that in the described context it is the mid-size city discourse that allows for selective profiling, as well as parallel reading of the coexisting urban images.

Le récent film d’Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Cemetery of Splendour, 2015, 122 min.) nous propose une expérience singulière : celle de l’indécision du voir. Indécision d’abord portée par la trame narrative, indécision aussi face au statut des images, indécision encore liée au fait que les objets de perception s’effacent ici au profit de l’arrière-plan. En s’intéressant à trois déclinaisons de ce dernier phénomène singulier – 1. Quand le fond cinématographique prend consistance ; 2. Quand l’atmosphère teinte l’expérience ; 3. Quand les immatérialités s’expriment – il s’agira dans ce texte de s’attacher aux manières ténues et diffuses au travers desquelles le film permet de révéler le potentiel sensible d’un lieu et tenir ainsi la promesse du cinéma.

La  percepción social  de los habitantes sobre  Ciudad Juárez, su  imagen  urbana  y los elementos que se encuentran en una constante construcción dentro de la ciudad, se traduce en la manera en que son expresados, en  la forma en que son apropiados y utilizados, en el modo en que son  compartidos por los  juarenses,  y  en el  grado  en que éstos  se  interiorizan  como realidades y se vuelven locuciones colectivas las cuales pueden resultar en acciones por parte de actores urbanos. La imagen urbana para los juarenses es la de una ciudad en movimiento y cambio, la cual presenta  dentro de sus representaciones a los  espacios vacíos,  lotes baldíos, áreas que son percibidas como espacios abandonados, inseguros, sucios y mal aprovechados, que pueden ser a su vez lugares de oportunidad y cambio. Partiendo de un análisis de la percepción social de los juarenses el objetivo de esta investigación es el de desarrollar una propuesta de  intervención urbano-artística  como el comienzo de una  acción  pública,  la cual refleje y  pueda contribuir  a la formación de los elementos de identidad y ayude al aprovechamiento de los lotes baldíos. Se trata de una investigación de corte cualitativo donde se pretende entender la realidad desde la percepción del sujeto, el habitante urbano juarense, con un interés centrado en lo subjetivo, en una indagación de las interpretaciones y reflexiones en torno al paisaje urbano juarense y las imágenes que están siendo compartidas.

El presente ensayo analiza dos novelas situadas en territorios de segregación en el siglo XX en Argentina. "Villa Miseria también es América" y "Las colinas del hambre" son interrogadas con la idea de que se trata de dos arquetipos en las maneras de construir significantes y estrategias de visibilización. Se busca comprender y poner de manifiesto la construcción de imágenes llevada adelante por estas novelas para nombrar y significar la configuración de espacios de relegación. El propósito es definir los términos intervinientes en la fragua de una imagen que luego se cristalizó y comenzó a operar como imaginario urbano. El imaginario, que en la actualidad está vinculado a las villas o territorios de segregación, está alimentado por una serie de imágenes históricamente fraguadas que incluso adquirieron, según el momento, características prácticas y materialidades identificables en la trama urbana.
