Abstract

In this study we examine an archaeological context of the Antonine age from a suburban imposing villa situated near the Roman Theatre in Sessa Aurunca. The excavation has shown that at the age of Hadrian the house was severely damaged as a consequence of an earthquake and subsequently abandoned. This is evidenced not only by the dynamics of deposition of layers of debris found during the exploration of the site, but also by the fact that the ceramic fragments recovered almost fully reconstruct the instrumentum domesticum in use at the time of the collapse of the house. Therefore, this context provides a reliable sample survey of the products circulating in Campania between the Principality of Hadrian and that of Antoninus Pius. Among the products imported the merchandises, coming from Africa Proconsularis, are predominant while it is down noticeably the pottery coming from the province of Asia. Instead, they are still sufficiently attested the common use ceramic and amphorae locally produced where it was kept the famous wine Falernum. Finally, it is important to remember the brands present on the bricks and roofing tiles found during the excavation which represent a first step towards the creation of a corpus of stamps coming from Aurunca area.

Luke is one of the largest and richest Classical Antiquity sites on
the island of Brač. There have been no archaeological excavations,
but several field surveys have been conducted at the site.
The site has been known since 1899, when an altar stone dedicated
to Jupiter Dolichenus was unearthed. The article describes
the artefacts found in the spring of 2003. The artefacts were
dated to the period from the first to the fifth century.

ABSTRACT
The present article deals with the Hellenistic and Roman pottery collected during the Karataş-Survey in 2007 at the
site of the orthogonal settlement. Since the discovery of ruins in 1811 by F. Beaufort at Cape Karataş (Adana Province,
Eastern Cilicia), scholars have discussed whether they belonged to Mallos or to its port and sanctuary Magarsos.
Today it is usually agreed that the settlement encircled with fortifications on Cape Karataş belong to Magarsos.
The earliest examples of Hellenistic fine ceramics from Karataş are the black-glazed pottery dating to the end of the
4th and the beginning of the 3rd century BC. The sherds, which can be compared with material from the deposits of
Syrio-Palestinian sites (3rd-1st centuries BC), comprises mainly Hellenistic Colour-Coated pottery. Hellenistic and
Roman Eastern Sigillata A (ESA) forms are also documented. The latest examples of Roman Period are Eastern Sigillata
B (ESB) dating to the 2nd-3rd centuries AD. The coarse pottery assemblage comprises mainly storage, transport
and kitchen vessels with light coloured fabric and displays a variety of forms including craters, mortaria, amphorae,
and cooking vessels. The earliest examples can be compared with the ceramics of the 3rd century BC from different
deposits in Syrio-Palestinian and Cypriot sites. A cooking pot (lopas), is the latest datable sherd among the coarse
wares. Typological analogies with the findings from Tarsus and Knossos allow us to classify this type to Middle Roman
Period.

In 2004 a total of 260 features were uncovered on a 14.000 sq.m large excavation near Kiskunhalas, Hungary. 249 belonged to the Sarmatian Age. Territorial spread of pits, granary pits, smoke houses, kiln and ditches was uneven. Roman imported pottery material can be dated to the period between 180-230/240. In the Barbarian pottery material, shapes determined as Dacian features in the material of the Ujhartyan settlement can be met.

Vryokastro, Kythnos: Keramik, Lampen und Terrakotten aus der antiken Stadt und dem Heiligtum der Akrolopis. Erste Ergebnisse des Surveys


In diesem Artikel werden die ersten Auswertungen der Streukeramik archaischer bis römischer Zeit der Hauptstadt der Kykladen Insel Kythnos, Vryokastro, vorgetragen. Die Keramik wurde durch eine systematische Oberflächenforschung (Survey) zwischen 1990 und 1995 gesammelt und bearbeitet, unter der Leitung von Prof. A. Mazarakis Ainian. Sie stammt aus den zwei Nekropolen außerhalb der Stadtmauern, aus dem Stadtinneren und den Heiligtümern der oberen Stadt. Obwohl die Stadt schon seit protogeometrischer Zeit bewohnt zu sein scheint, geben die Nekropolen und das Heiligtum eine intensive Bewohnung seit dem 6. Jahrhundert an. Die Keramik der archaischen und klassischen Zeit ist zum großen Teil attisch und korinthisch. Die Keramik der hellenistischen Zeit ist arm repräsentiert, was aber eventuell auf eine Zufall Situation zurückzuführen ist. Die Stadt wird mindestens bis ins 6. Jahrhundert n. Chr. bewohnt, wie die rote „Spätrömische Feinkeramik“ beweist.
Höchst interessant ist die reiche Ausstattung des Frauenheiligtums, das den 145,75 m. hohen Gipfel der Stadt einnimmt. Es befindet sich zwar im Inneren der Mauern, ist aber von der Stadt durch eine Zwischenmauer, diateichisma, abgeschirmt. Die zahlreichen Funde sind Lampen vom 6. Jh. V. Chr. bis zum 5. Jh. N. Chr., komplexe Polykandela – Kultlampen, die eine reiche und seltene Typologie aufweisen, klassische und hellenistische Terrakottafiguren von Frauen (Hydriaphoren, stehende u. sitzende Figuren), und Kindern (meist junge Buben), Hydrien und Miniaturgefäße (Hydrisken, korinthische Skyphoi, Lampen), Feinkeramik (schwarz – und rotfigurige attische Keramik). Sehr wichtig sind acht Fragmente von attischen eleusinischen Kernoi, einem Kultgefäß das charakteristisch für den Kult der eleusinischen Demeter und Kore ist. Selten wird es außerhalb von Attika registriert, und es erlaubt uns somit eine sichere Identifizierung der hier verehrten Göttin und interessante Zusammenhänge zu dem attischen Heiligtum von Eleusis vorzuschlagen. Die Aufarbeitung dieser Streufunde erlaubt es diejenigen Zusammenhänge zu erläutern, die Kythnos mit Athen und dem eleusinischen Heiligtum näher verbinden.
